Choose the rollback method based on what changed and whether Windows still starts: remove a recent quality update from Settings or Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), but use Go back after upgrading to a new Windows version. Back up important files first where possible, and have your BitLocker recovery key ready before using recovery tools.
First, identify what changed
A monthly or other recent update and an upgrade to a new Windows version use different rollback paths. If the issue began after an update and Windows starts, try Uninstall updates. If the issue followed a version upgrade, check for Go back. If Windows will not start, use WinRE to reach recovery options.

Uninstall a recent update when Windows starts
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates.
- Find the update that preceded the problem, select Uninstall, and follow the prompts.
- Restart the PC and check whether the issue has cleared.
This is for removing an installed update, not reverting a full Windows version upgrade. The list may not offer every update for removal. Microsoft’s guidance is to uninstall a recent update if it is causing device errors or other issues; it is an attempt to resolve the problem, not a guarantee.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to reach the update-removal option. If the recovery menu asks for a BitLocker recovery key, you will need that key to continue. Microsoft’s recovery guidance notes that most WinRE recovery options require it when BitLocker is enabled.

- Enter WinRE. If Windows cannot start normally, Windows may show recovery after repeated failed starts; you can also use Windows recovery or installation media to access repair tools.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
- Choose the offered option for the latest quality update or latest feature update, as appropriate, then follow the prompts.
WinRE labels can vary by Windows build. Microsoft’s support text repeats “latest quality update” when describing the two choices, so use the actual options displayed on your PC rather than assuming the support-page wording distinguishes them clearly. See Microsoft’s update-uninstall instructions and its Windows recovery options.
Use Go back after a Windows version upgrade
If the problem began after upgrading to a new Windows version, check Settings > System > Recovery > Go back. Select Go back if it is available and follow the prompts. Microsoft says the option is generally available for 10 days after an upgrade; that is not a guarantee that every PC will show it for the full period.
Going back keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made since then. The previous-version files, including windows.old and $windows.~bt, must still be present. Microsoft says the previous version is automatically deleted after 10 days; deleting it manually also removes the ability to go back. Its instructions also say to remove user accounts added after the upgrade and have the upgrade USB drive available if one was used. Details: Go back to the previous version of Windows and Delete your previous version of Windows.

If direct rollback is unavailable or does not fix the problem
Try a restore option if a suitable restore point exists
For supported Windows 11 24H2-or-later systems, Microsoft lists point-in-time restore when a restore point is available. It returns the system, apps, settings, and files to the selected point, so changes made afterward are lost. System Restore is another option: it rolls back system files and settings while leaving personal files alone. Availability depends on the system and whether a usable restore point exists. See Microsoft’s point-in-time restore guidance and recovery options.
Use Safe Mode only to help diagnose startup problems
Safe Mode starts Windows with only essential services and drivers. It can help determine whether startup behavior changes in a reduced environment, but it does not itself uninstall an update. If the update is the suspected cause, use the update-removal route when available.
Reset or reinstall only after protecting your data
If built-in recovery options fail, Windows also offers reset and reinstall routes. Their effects differ, and reinstalling from installation media can remove everything. Back up files before taking a destructive recovery step whenever you can. A USB flash drive for Windows recovery media may be useful for accessing fallback recovery or installation tools; it is not needed for Settings-based update removal or Go back. Follow Microsoft’s recovery options guidance for the route you choose.
Quick Recap
Before you start: protect files and recovery access
- Back up important files before uninstalling, restoring, resetting, or reinstalling where possible.
- Locate your BitLocker recovery key before entering WinRE if device encryption is enabled.
- For Go back, save work and be prepared for apps or drivers installed after the upgrade and settings changes to be removed or reversed.
- If a rollback choice is missing, do not assume it is hidden: some updates cannot be uninstalled, and Go back may disappear when its time window ends or the previous-version files are removed.
