No ordinary symptom proves that a home router is part of a botnet. Slow internet, dropped Wi-Fi and a warm case all have many harmless causes. The better evidence is in the router’s administration settings, logs, firmware status and connections, and any one finding is a reason to investigate, not a verdict. This guide covers what is worth checking, what to do if something looks wrong, and when replacing the router makes sense.
One limit up front: the official guidance available on this topic comes mostly from CISA and is written for network defenders and operators. It is not a validated home diagnostic test, and no published prevalence figure for infected home routers was found, so none is quoted here.

Signs that warrant checking
Treat each item below as “may indicate a problem,” not as confirmation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Administration access you don’t recognize
CISA’s advisory on state-sponsored compromise of network devices directs defenders to review router logs and configurations for unexpected or unusual activity, with particular attention to administrative access. Its December 2024 communications-infrastructure hardening guidance (with partner agencies) makes the same kind of recommendation. For a home user, the equivalent is login records, if your router keeps them, or a new admin account, or a management feature you never turned on.
Settings or accounts you didn’t change
Look for changes you cannot account for. Useful places to check in the router’s admin page include:
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Administrator or user accounts you didn’t create
- DNS server settings that differ from your ISP’s defaults or from what you set yourself
- Port forwarding, remote or cloud management, and other services open to the internet
- Firmware version and any update history
Menu names vary by manufacturer, so these are things to look for rather than exact paths. Changes you can’t explain are more meaningful than a slow connection.
Unexplained traffic or connections
CISA recommends monitoring ingress and egress traffic for anomalous activity. Most consumer routers show only limited data, such as a connected-device list or basic usage counters. Unknown devices or unexplained heavy upload can justify a closer look, but they do not by themselves identify a botnet.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Out-of-support or unpatched equipment
A router that no longer gets security updates is at higher risk, according to CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance. Check the manufacturer’s or ISP’s support notices for your exact model. Unsupported status alone does not mean the router is infected.
What does not prove infection
Slow speeds, occasional disconnects and a single odd device on the list don’t establish anything alone. Check configuration, logs and support status before drawing a conclusion.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
What to do if something looks wrong
- Use a known-clean phone or computer. Contact your ISP or the router maker from a device you trust. Ask whether your model and firmware version are still supported, and request their recovery procedure.
- Contain it if practical. If the router is behaving suspiciously, disconnect its internet (WAN) connection while you arrange help.
- Record the evidence. Note the model, firmware version, timestamps and any alerts. Take screenshots of unexpected settings or log entries before you change anything.
- Follow model-specific restoration steps. CISA’s guidance stresses reviewing logs and configuration and understanding the scope of a compromise before mitigating it. The sources do not establish one universal consumer cleanup procedure. Do not assume that a reboot or a single password change removes a persistent compromise.
- Harden the restored router. Install current supported firmware and replace default and admin passwords with unique ones. Disable remote administration and any services you don’t use, where the product allows it. CISA’s exposure guidance covers patching, changing default passwords and cutting unnecessary internet exposure, and older US-CERT small-office/home-office router guidance (2011) also advises changing factory credentials. That older document is a baseline for basic principles only.
- Protect your accounts. If the router may have exposed traffic or credentials, change important passwords from a device you believe is clean. Contact your ISP if service or account settings look altered. A compromised router does not necessarily mean every connected device is infected.
Restore the router or replace it?
Compare four things:
| Question | Favors restoring | Favors replacing |
|---|---|---|
| Does your exact model still receive security updates? | Yes | No, or you can’t tell |
| Does the vendor or ISP give a clear reset and recovery procedure? | Yes | No clear safe path |
| Can you account for the suspicious settings or management access? | Yes | No |
| Can you disable unneeded remote management and services? | Yes | No |
CISA explicitly recommends replacing devices that no longer receive security support. If yours falls into that group, look for a security-supported home Wi-Fi router, and check your ISP’s or manufacturer’s recovery guidance first. A new router is not a standalone cure: apply the hardening steps above, and change credentials from a clean device.
