To roll back a Windows 11 Beta build, open Settings > System > Recovery and select Go back if it is available. Microsoft says this option keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed since the upgrade and reverses settings changes made since then. Back up important files first: keeping personal files is not a guarantee that every app, setting, or later change will remain.
How do I roll back a Windows 11 Beta build without losing my files?
- Save your work and back up important files to a separate location. Microsoft warns that some recovery options can result in data loss: Recovery options in Windows.
- If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, make sure you can access the recovery key. Microsoft says a BitLocker key is needed for most recovery options that use the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
- Open Settings > System > Recovery and check whether Go back is listed.
- If it is available, select Go back and follow the on-screen prompts. Read the prompts before confirming; Windows will explain the rollback choices on your device.
Microsoft’s Go back to the previous version of Windows guidance says the option is available for a limited time—in most cases, 10 days after upgrading. That is a typical window, not a guarantee for every PC. The previous Windows installation is automatically deleted after 10 days, and deleting it sooner also removes the ability to use Go back. The practical check is whether the option is still present in Recovery settings.

What Go back keeps—and what it removes
Microsoft says Go back keeps personal files. It removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made since then. Apps added, removed, or updated after the upgrade might not be available or work properly after the rollback.
Microsoft lists additional conditions for the rollback path: the windows.old and $windows.~bt folders must still be present; user accounts added after the upgrade must be removed; and, if a USB drive was used to upgrade, that drive must be available. If one of the requirements is not met, the Go back option may be unavailable or the rollback may not proceed.

If Go back is missing
If Go back does not appear, the normal in-place rollback path may no longer be available. Finding a Windows.old folder does not by itself restore that option. Choose an alternative based on whether the problem is a recent update or a broader build change, and on how much you can afford to reinstall:
| Option | What it targets | Personal files | Apps and settings | Boot or recovery access |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall a Windows update | A recent Windows update, rather than a broader version rollback | Microsoft says files are not affected | Microsoft says apps are not affected | Available through Windows recovery options; WinRE may be required if Windows will not start |
| Go back | The previous Windows version/build after an upgrade | Kept, according to Microsoft | Removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes | Start from Settings if the option is available |
| System Restore | System changes, such as recently installed apps, drivers, updates, or settings | Not affected, according to Microsoft | May affect recently installed apps, drivers, updates, or settings | Can be run from Windows or recovery options |
| Reset this PC > Keep my files | Reinstalling Windows, not simply undoing a Beta build | Preserved, according to Microsoft | Apps and settings are removed | Start in Settings or use recovery options |
| Recovery media or clean installation | Reinstalling Windows; manufacturer recovery media may restore the device’s original system | May be removed; Microsoft says reinstalling from installation media can remove everything | Do not expect apps or settings to be retained | Requires booting from recovery or installation media when applicable |
For details on the available paths and their effects, see Microsoft’s recovery options guidance, Reset your PC, and System Restore. These alternatives are not equivalent to Go back: Reset reinstalls Windows, while System Restore rolls back system changes rather than the Windows build itself.

Windows.old is not a guaranteed rollback
Windows.old can temporarily hold files for retrieval in the specific upgrade case where “Nothing” was chosen, for up to 10 days. That is file retrieval, not a complete build rollback. Microsoft says this method does not work after Reset this PC or after a fresh installation from media that formats the drive. See Restore files from the Windows.old folder.

Rolling back does not stop Insider previews
Going back to an earlier build does not opt the PC out of the Windows Insider Program. Microsoft states: “Going back to an earlier build won’t remove you from the Insider Program.” If your aim is to stop receiving preview builds, treat that as a separate Insider settings decision; the rollback itself does not change enrollment. If you want to restore the device to its original operating system, Microsoft describes a separate recovery-image route and advises backing up first. See the Go back guidance and Windows recovery options.
