Treat memory, chat history, model training, and data retention as separate controls: changing one does not necessarily change the others. If you build or buy an AI agent, user-facing privacy settings are not a substitute for secure storage, access controls, and defenses against malicious data.
What “AI memory” means for your privacy
Memory is information an AI service can use to personalize later interactions. Depending on the product, that context may come from saved preferences, past chats, uploaded files, custom instructions, or connected apps. Memory is only one part of the data picture: a service may also keep conversation history, use some conversations to improve models under applicable settings, or retain data for operational or safety reasons.
Keep these questions separate when reviewing a service: Does it create or use personalization? Are conversations saved in history? Can conversations be used to improve models? How long are prompts, files, logs, and other records retained? A “no” to one does not answer the others.
For example, OpenAI documents separate memory and data controls for ChatGPT. Turning off “Improve the model for everyone” does not remove chats from history, and turning off Memory does not delete chats. How to reduce what an AI assistant remembers
Share only what the task needs
- Use a generalized description when identifying details are unnecessary. For example, describe a scheduling constraint without naming a client or sharing their private calendar.
- Do not put passwords, one-time authentication codes, recovery phrases, or financial account credentials into a conversation or persistent memory.
- Handle workplace, medical, financial, and other people’s information according to your organization’s rules and any applicable privacy obligations.
- Before connecting an app or uploading a file, consider what it exposes and whether the assistant needs access to all of it.
OpenAI warns that sensitive information a user shares can appear in ChatGPT Memory. If you would not want a detail available for future personalization, do not ask the assistant to remember it.
Inspect personalization and memory settings
In ChatGPT, the documented route is Settings > Personalization > Memory. Review the controls and any visible memory summary. OpenAI notes that a summary may not show every detail or source the service could reference, so do not treat it as a complete inventory.

Turn off the specific memory or history-reference feature you do not want. This limits the relevant feature; it is not a deletion command for existing memories, chats, files, or other records. Check the settings for the exact account and product you use, because availability and behavior can differ.
Choose temporary or private modes deliberately
A temporary or private mode may limit personalization or model improvement, but its meaning is service-specific. In ChatGPT, choose the Temporary Chat personalization option before starting if you do not want existing memories used. A personalized Temporary Chat may use existing memories, although it does not create or update them. OpenAI says Temporary Chats may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. They are not used to improve models while temporary, but saving one converts it to a regular chat subject to account settings.

How to delete information an AI already remembers
Deletion may require removing more than one copy. In ChatGPT, saved memories are stored separately from chat history, so deleting a chat alone may not remove its saved memory, and deleting a saved memory alone may leave the original conversation or other source material.
- Review saved memories and remove the relevant entry in the service’s memory or personalization settings.
- Delete the conversation that supplied the information, if you also want that source conversation removed.
- Check other places the detail may exist, such as archived chats, uploaded files or a file library, project or custom-assistant files, and connected apps.
- For a work or managed account, ask the administrator which retention, deletion, and access rules apply; organization policies may control or limit consumer-style settings.
OpenAI says memory changes can take time to propagate and that logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. These details apply to ChatGPT’s documented controls; another service may have different deletion scope, timing, and exceptions. See OpenAI’s Memory documentation.

How memory, training, and retention differ across services
Provider examples are useful only when kept within their stated scope. The following are not a privacy ranking: they cover different products, account types, and data flows. Check the current terms and settings for the exact service and feature you use.

Can an AI agent’s memory be hacked or poisoned?
Yes. Persistent memory can become a security boundary, not just a convenience feature. OWASP identifies memory poisoning, prompt injection, tool abuse, data exfiltration, excessive autonomy, and sensitive-data exposure among agent risks. It defines “Memory Poisoning” as “Malicious data persisted in agent memory to influence future sessions or other users.” A poisoned record could cause an agent to act on false information later or expose information across users if storage and retrieval are poorly protected.

For organizations building or buying AI memory systems, OWASP’s LLM Verification Standard v2.0 points to controls such as:
- Keep conversational memory separated by user or tenant so one user cannot retrieve or alter another’s records.
- Authenticate external storage, including vector databases and caches, and enforce least-privilege access to production storage.
- Prevent unauthorized users or untrusted sources from injecting arbitrary documents or false records into knowledge stores.
- Detect and prevent sensitive information in internal knowledge stores from leaking through context supplied to a model.
These controls address the storage and retrieval system around the model; a prompt telling the model to “keep data private” is not an equivalent boundary. See the OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet and OWASP LLM Verification Standard v2.0.
Questions to ask a vendor or engineering team
- Who can read or write persistent memory, and are tenant boundaries enforced in storage and retrieval rather than only in the model prompt?
- How is retrieved or user-supplied content treated when it could contain malicious instructions?
- How does deletion propagate to source records, embeddings, caches, logs, and backups?
- How long do those records persist, and what audit and incident-response controls are in place?
These are buyer and engineering checks derived from OWASP’s guidance, not a certification of any particular product.
