For most Galaxy phones running a stable update, Samsung says you cannot downgrade to earlier firmware. The exception in Samsung’s published guidance is a limited beta rollback: leave the beta and use Smart Switch on a computer if it offers a “Downgrade” option. If an update failed or your phone will not start, use recovery support instead; a factory reset does not undo an update.
First identify what went wrong
“Roll back” can mean different things. A Galaxy phone that installed a stable update and now has bugs is not in the same situation as a phone running beta software or one whose update failed midway. Samsung’s supported next step depends on which case describes your device.

Samsung’s general downgrade statement appears on its India support page, last updated October 1, 2026. Menu names and layouts can vary by model and software version. Check current guidance for your exact model, carrier or region, software version, and beta enrollment before taking device-specific steps.
If a stable update installed but introduced bugs
Samsung’s published guidance says: “Once your device has been updated to the latest software version, you cannot downgrade to a previous firmware version due to enhanced security policies.” Its Smart Switch update instructions describe updating and emergency recovery, not a general way to restore an earlier stable release.

Instead, record the phone’s model and software build and note what fails, when it began, and whether the problem is repeatable. Back up important content, consult Samsung’s current support guidance for the device, and contact Samsung if the issue persists. A factory reset may be a troubleshooting option, but it will not reinstall the previous Android or One UI version.
If you are using beta software
Samsung’s Beta Tips Community Manager described a specific beta exit route in a post dated May 23, 2025:

- Leave the beta through the beta program’s instructions for your device.
- Connect the phone or tablet to Smart Switch on a computer.
- Select “Downgrade” only if Smart Switch offers that option for the beta device.
The notice says the device will be initialized (factory reset). Back up first. This is program-specific guidance, not a guarantee that the option is available for every model, region, or beta enrollment; if it does not appear, check the program’s current Samsung instructions rather than treating Smart Switch as a general downgrade tool.

This is an update-recovery problem, not a request to choose an older firmware version. Samsung documents Emergency Software Recovery and Reset in Smart Switch for update failures. Follow the current Smart Switch recovery instructions for the computer and device.

If recovery on the original computer fails, Samsung’s instructions describe using an emergency recovery code on another computer. The code is available only on the computer where the update failed, and recovery on another computer includes a factory data reset. Back up where possible and expect that recovery may erase data. If the phone still fails to boot normally after an update failure, Samsung says service will be required to reflash the device.

A factory reset deletes personal data and restores factory settings; Samsung’s reset guidance does not say it restores earlier firmware. Back up first and make sure you know the credentials needed afterward. Samsung says a Samsung account password may be required to complete a reset, and Google Factory Reset Protection may require the previously registered Google account after some resets. Before you act
- Confirm whether the phone is on stable or beta software and whether the update completed successfully.
- Check the exact model, carrier or region, and current software version against current Samsung support information.
- Back up important data before beta rollback, emergency recovery, or a factory reset; each may initialize or erase the device.
- Do not assume that a Smart Switch update feature or factory reset can downgrade stable firmware.
