For a normal update that installed successfully, there is no Samsung-supported way for a consumer to go back. Samsung India’s support page on updating Galaxy devices (last updated October 1, 2026) says: “Once your device has been updated to the latest software version, you cannot downgrade to a previous firmware version due to enhanced security policies.” The exceptions are narrow. They cover failed updates, phones that won’t boot, and people leaving a Samsung beta. Which one applies depends on three facts: did the update finish, does the phone boot, and were you running beta software?
Which situation are you in?

Menus and eligibility vary by model, carrier, region and software version, as Samsung notes on its support pages. The guidance below is Samsung’s published position, not a promise for every device.

The update installed, but the phone is worse
This is the most common case, and it is the one with no documented undo. Samsung’s reason is security: newer firmware carries patches, and its policies are designed to stop devices from returning to older builds. Odin and other manual flashing tools are not a supported consumer route here. Samsung’s guidance does not offer them, and forcing an older build is exactly what these policies aim to prevent.
What to do instead
- Write down the details. Note the model number, carrier, current software version (Settings > About phone > Software information) and exactly what broke, and when it started.
- Contact Samsung support. Support can check whether your model and carrier have a known issue or a fix on the way.
- Try ordinary fixes first. These are general troubleshooting steps, not rollback methods. Restart the phone, boot into Safe mode to see whether a third-party app is responsible, update the apps that misbehave, and check for a follow-up patch under Settings > Software update.
- Back up before any reset. A factory data reset may clear post-update glitches, but it erases the phone. It will not install an older Android version.
The update failed or was interrupted
Samsung US describes the problem this way: “If a software update is interrupted because of an error on your device or computer, your device may fail to operate normally.” In that case Smart Switch on a computer offers emergency software recovery. Samsung’s instructions cover recovery and reset, and its Phone Recovery Guide describes running recovery on another computer using an emergency recovery code.

Before you start
- Back up whatever data you can still reach. Samsung warns that emergency recovery may include a factory reset.
- Use a computer with Smart Switch installed, and follow the on-screen prompts and current Samsung instructions for your model.
- Expect recovery to bring the phone back to working order on current official software. It is a repair for a broken update, not a way to pick an earlier version.
The phone won’t boot after a failed update
Samsung US’s failed-update troubleshooting says: “If the device fails to boot normally after an update fails, service will be required to reflash the device.” If Smart Switch recovery can’t revive the phone, book service with Samsung or your carrier. Reflashing is not the same as downgrading, so don’t count on getting the earlier build back.
Leaving a Samsung beta
Beta participants have a real rollback path. In a post dated May 23, 2025, a Samsung Community manager (Beta_Manager) said that people who leave the beta can use Smart Switch’s Downgrade option to return a phone or tablet to the previous official version. Key points from that post:

- The device is initialized, so everything on it is erased. Back up first.
- The instructions cover phones and tablets only. Galaxy Watch rollback must be done at a service center.
- The post dates from 2025, and programs change from one release to the next. Check the current instructions for your beta before relying on it.
This exception does not extend to ordinary public updates. Smart Switch will not offer the same downgrade for a standard release.

Reducing the risk next time
- Back up with Smart Switch or Samsung Cloud before major updates, since no rollback exists if something goes wrong.
- Keep the battery well charged and the connection stable during the install. Samsung’s recovery guidance exists because interrupted updates can leave devices in a bad state.
- If you depend on the phone for work, consider waiting a few days after a major One UI release so early bug reports surface.
