Not directly: a PS4 cannot run original PS3 discs or downloads as PS3 software. You may be able to stream selected PS3 games through PlayStation Plus Premium in supported regions, or play a separate PS4 remaster or remake if one exists. For the original PS3 version, use a PS3; RPCS3 is a computer emulator, not a PS4 app.
Can a PS4 play original PS3 games?
No. Sony’s PlayStation FAQ states: “No, the PS4 system does not feature backward compatibility for PS3, PS2, or PSone games.” In practice, inserting a PS3 disc into a PS4 or trying to launch an original PS3 download will not make that game run natively.

Options for playing a PS3 game on or alongside a PS4
Stream a selected game with PlayStation Plus Premium
Sony offers streaming for selected original PS3 games through PlayStation Plus Premium in supported markets. Availability depends on the specific title, your region, and the current catalog; check the PlayStation Plus game catalog for your game and region before subscribing. Catalog availability can change, and streaming is not a local installation of the original PS3 software.
Sony’s PS4 catalog access guide lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed for streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p. Resolution depends on the game and connection, so meeting those figures does not guarantee a particular picture quality or an uninterrupted session.
#1 Best Overall
- "Suspend mode" eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button.
- Enables the greatest game developers in the world to unlock their creativity and push the boundaries of play through a platform that is tuned specifically to their needs.
- Engage in endless personal challenges between you and your community, and share your epic moments for the world to see.
- Gamers can share their epic triumphs by hitting the "SHARE button" on the controller, scan through the last few minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game.
Download a PS4 remaster or remake
Some games originally released for PS3 have a separate PS4 remastered or remake edition. If the edition is available for your account and region, you can download and play it as PS4 software. Sony distinguishes these downloadable PS4/PS5 versions from original PS3 games, which are in the streaming category. Check the exact edition in the PlayStation Store guidance and store listing: owning a PS3 disc does not turn it into a PS4 version.
Play the original software on a PS3
A PS3 console is the direct console option for original PS3-format discs and software. Sony’s PS3 manual describes the system as designed to play PS3-format software. If buying a used or refurbished console, confirm its condition, region compatibility, and included accessories with the seller.

Use RPCS3 on a computer, not a PS4
RPCS3 is a free, open-source PS3 emulator and debugger for Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD desktop computers. It is not a PS4 application. Before relying on it for a particular game, consult the project’s game compatibility list; compatibility is title-specific and can change over time.
Which option fits your situation?
| Option | What you play | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus Premium streaming on PS4 | A selected original PS3 game streamed from Sony’s service | Whether the title is currently in the catalog for your region, membership availability, and your connection |
| PS4 remaster or remake | A distinct PS4 edition, downloaded as PS4 software | Whether that exact edition is available in the PlayStation Store; the original PS3 disc is not the PS4 edition |
| PS3 console | Original PS3-format software | Console condition and region compatibility, especially for used hardware |
| RPCS3 on a computer | PS3 software through an emulator | Computer platform and the specific game’s current compatibility status |
The right route depends first on whether you need the original PS3 version or would accept a PS4 remake, and then on the title’s catalog or compatibility status and the hardware you already have. There is no single best option for every game or region.
