To undo one Pixel setting, change that preference back in Settings; do not erase the phone. To recover from an update problem, troubleshoot the symptom first. A factory reset erases user data but does not reinstall an older Android version. If you need to restore firmware, Google’s full OTA method can do so without requiring a wipe or bootloader unlock, while factory images erase data and older builds may be blocked by model-specific anti-rollback restrictions.
First identify what you want to roll back
“Roll back” can mean undoing a preference, clearing a category of settings, recovering from an update problem, or installing different firmware. These are different actions with different consequences.

- One preference changed: Find that feature in Settings and restore its previous value.
- Network configuration changed: A network-settings reset can clear saved networks and Bluetooth pairings.
- The phone has a problem after an update: Restart and troubleshoot the specific symptom before considering a reset.
- You want an older Android release: That is a firmware downgrade, not a factory reset, and it may be blocked for your device.
Undo a setting or reset one category
Restore a single preference
Open Settings, search for the affected feature, and change its value back. The exact menu names can vary with Android version and device configuration. If you do not remember what changed, review the relevant settings area rather than resetting the whole phone.
Reset Wi-Fi, mobile and Bluetooth settings
If the problem is limited to connectivity, look under Settings > System > Reset options for Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth. Labels may vary. Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance says this clears saved networks and pairings, so expect to reconnect to Wi-Fi and pair Bluetooth accessories again. It does not downgrade Android.

- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
Troubleshoot a problem that began after an update
- Restart the Pixel. Updates become active after a restart. If an update is still pending, install it and restart when prompted.
- Check the installed version and build. Go to Settings > About phone > Android version. Google says this page lists the Android version, security update, Google Play system update and build number.
- Allow for post-update activity. Google notes that battery use can temporarily increase while the phone downloads, optimizes and sets up software after an update.
- Use troubleshooting for the actual symptom. If the problem persists, consult Google’s current Pixel troubleshooting steps rather than assuming the update must be reversed.
Update timing can depend on the Pixel model and carrier. A factory reset is not an update-uninstall option: it removes user data but does not itself install an older Android release.
What each reset or firmware route does
| Route | Purpose | Data and security impact | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Change a setting back | Undo one preference | No broad erase; no bootloader unlock | You need to identify the setting |
| Reset a settings category | Clear items such as saved network configuration | Category-specific information, including saved networks and pairings, is cleared; no unlock required | Does not downgrade Android |
| Factory reset | Erase device state for troubleshooting | Erases phone data and apps; no firmware flashing is implied | Does not itself install an older OS |
| Full OTA sideload | Restore official firmware, including after a failed OTA | Google says the method does not require wiping data or unlocking the bootloader | Does not guarantee that any older build can be installed |
| Factory image | Restore original factory firmware | Installation erases data; unlocking the bootloader reduces security | Anti-rollback and device/build restrictions can block older versions |
Factory reset only when erasing the phone is justified
Back up important data before resetting. A factory reset removes all data and apps from the phone; some account-backed data may be restorable afterward, but do not treat that as a complete backup. When Settings is available, use its reset option and follow the on-screen prompts. Google’s reset guidance explains the reset process and backup considerations.

If Settings is inaccessible
Google also documents a button-based path through Fastboot and Recovery to Wipe data/factory reset, then reboot. The button sequence differs by Pixel generation. Follow Google’s instructions for the exact device in its Fastboot and recovery reset guidance. This still erases data; it is not a firmware downgrade.
When firmware restoration is actually needed
Prefer the full OTA route for official firmware recovery
Google provides full OTA packages for Pixel devices, including recovery from a failed OTA. Google says this method has the same effect as flashing the corresponding factory image, without requiring a device wipe or bootloader unlock. Read Google’s Full OTA Images for Nexus and Pixel Devices instructions and verify the exact device and package before proceeding. This is a firmware-restoration route, not a promise that every previous release is available or installable.
Understand factory-image risks and version limits
Google describes factory images as binary images for restoring original factory firmware. Its Factory Images for Nexus and Pixel Devices page says installation erases device data, unlocking the bootloader makes the device less secure, and the bootloader should be relocked after use. Google says it is typically easier and safer to sideload the full OTA image instead of using factory images.
Some updates impose anti-rollback restrictions. Google’s factory-image page, last updated September 15, 2026, says:

Prepare before a reset, repair or firmware procedure
- Identify the exact Pixel model and installed build at Settings > About phone > Android version, if the phone can be opened.
- Back up important data before a factory reset, factory-image installation or repair.
- Use Google’s instructions for the exact model; button sequences and firmware restrictions vary.
- If service is needed, check eligibility and local options. Google says Repair Mode is available on eligible Pixel phones running Android 14 with the December 2023 update or higher and at least 2 GB of free space. Its repair preparation guidance asks users to back up and remove the SIM before service.
