For a normal stable One UI update, Samsung says you cannot return to earlier firmware. The documented exception is leaving a One UI beta: eligible beta users may see a “Downgrade” option in Smart Switch on a computer. That process initializes the phone, so back up your data first.
First, identify whether you installed a beta or a stable update
Before trying to undo anything, note your Galaxy model, carrier or region, One UI version, and Android/software version. Menu names and available options vary by model and software version.

- Public stable update: Samsung Support says an updated device cannot be downgraded to previous firmware because of enhanced security policies. Its Singapore support page, last updated August 26, 2026, states this directly.
- One UI beta: Samsung Community’s Beta Manager described a Smart Switch rollback to the previous official version for users leaving the beta. The instructions were posted May 23, 2025, and apply to that beta-exit workflow—not to stable updates generally. Check the current beta-program instructions for your device before proceeding.
If you’re leaving a One UI beta
Use the beta program’s current instructions and Smart Switch on a computer. Samsung’s Beta Manager says the “Downgrade” option is available when the device is on beta; its availability may depend on the program, model, region, and current software. You will need a computer and a USB connection. Use a compatible data-capable cable; having a cable does not make a stable-firmware downgrade possible.
- Back up important files and information before starting. The rollback initializes the phone, and a backup does not guarantee that every app, setting, or item of app data will return exactly as it was.
- Check the current Samsung Beta program instructions for your phone and confirm that it offers a beta-exit downgrade.
- Install or open Smart Switch on a computer, connect the phone by USB, and follow the beta rollback prompts if the “Downgrade” control is offered.
- Allow the process to finish before disconnecting the phone. If Smart Switch does not detect it or the downgrade option is missing, do not treat that as permission to force a firmware installation; contact Samsung support or use the beta program’s support channel.
Samsung Community’s Beta Manager announcement describes the Smart Switch rollback and data initialization. Because that post is from 2025, verify the instructions for the beta currently installed rather than assuming the same screens or eligibility still apply.

If you installed a stable One UI update
Samsung’s general support guidance does not offer a consumer rollback path to earlier firmware after a stable update. Smart Switch can be used for official update and recovery tasks, but Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance is not a promise that it can downgrade a stable release. Avoid treating firmware flashing or bootloader workarounds as Samsung-supported rollback procedures.
Try official troubleshooting before considering service
- Check Settings for an available official software update; a later release may address the problem.
- Record the symptoms, when they began, and your model and software versions. Report update-related issues through Samsung Members or contact Samsung support.
- If Smart Switch fails during an official update or recovery, check the computer connection and follow Samsung’s device-specific instructions. Samsung’s US guidance recommends connecting with the USB cable supplied with the Galaxy device; some computers may need an adapter.
- If the phone will not boot normally after an update failure, Samsung says service may be required. Use Samsung support or an authorized service center rather than repeatedly attempting unsupported firmware changes.
For a boot-loop or failed update, see Samsung’s US boot-loop guidance and US software-update-failure guidance. These cover official update and recovery steps, not a general downgrade from stable firmware. Samsung Gulf also lists Samsung Members, its Contact Center, and Authorized Service Centers for post-update issues.

What to weigh before attempting any rollback
| Consideration | What it means |
|---|---|
| Data | The documented beta rollback initializes the phone. Back up beforehand, and do not assume every app state or setting will restore. |
| Security | Samsung attributes its stable-firmware downgrade restriction to enhanced security policies. Samsung Knox documentation describes rollback prevention as a security mechanism; its 2021 white paper is enterprise-focused and is not a model-specific statement about every current consumer phone. |
| Compatibility and function | Samsung Gulf warns that downgrading can cause malfunction, affect Knox protections, or make apps incompatible. These are possible consequences, not guaranteed outcomes for every device. |
| Warranty and support | Samsung Gulf warns that downgrading may affect warranty coverage or future Samsung support. This warning is regionally published and does not establish the legal outcome for every country or circumstance. |
| Help if something goes wrong | Samsung channels can troubleshoot update problems; a phone that cannot boot normally after an update failure may need service. |
For technical context, Samsung’s Knox Platform for Enterprise white paper explains that hardware-backed Root of Trust components include rollback prevention, intended to address risks from older software with known vulnerabilities. It is dated 2021 and focused on enterprise Knox, so it should not be read as a device-specific guarantee about the effect of a particular rollback.
