Then revoke any separate keys, passwords, or sessions the agent could use, and ask the provider to delete information the agent already received. These are separate steps: disconnecting an app usually stops future access through that connection, but does not itself erase stored copies.
First identify how the agent got access
An AI agent may reach an account through an OAuth or connected-app authorization, an API key, an app-specific password, a signed-in session, or a permission granted by a workplace administrator. Each mechanism has its own control. Removing one does not prove that the others have been removed.

- Connected app or OAuth grant: revoke it in the account that authorized the app.
- API key or app-specific password: delete or revoke the credential separately.
- Signed-in session: sign out sessions you do not recognize or no longer need.
- Workplace or school permission: ask the administrator to remove grants that you cannot revoke yourself.
If the agent is actively sending messages, changing files, or taking other actions, pause or disable its workflow first if the product provides that control. There is no universal agent kill switch; use the control documented by the specific product.

- Stop active automation. Pause the agent or workflow where possible so it does not continue acting while you inspect permissions.
- Open the account that provided access. Look for connected apps, authorized applications, linked apps, integrations, or account security settings. Verify the account identity and permissions before removing anything.
- Remove the grant. Use the account provider’s revoke, remove access, or disconnect control. If the authorization was made through a work or school tenant, an administrator may need to handle it.
- Revoke credentials independently. Delete or rotate API keys, app-specific passwords, service credentials, and secrets the agent could access. For a potentially exposed OpenAI API key, OpenAI advises deleting it in the API key dashboard, reviewing usage, retaining relevant details, and contacting support: OpenAI account security guidance.
- Review activity and sessions. Check for unfamiliar account or API activity. If you suspect unauthorized access, secure the sign-in account and end relevant sessions. OpenAI says logging out all devices may take up to 30 minutes to affect other ChatGPT sessions; do not assume that timing applies to other services. OpenAI’s security guidance also recommends reviewing security history and enabling MFA.
- Request deletion separately. Use the AI provider’s data controls or contact its support team to ask about information already received or retained. Removing account access is not a deletion request.
- Escalate workplace access. If you cannot remove a grant or the agent accessed organization data, contact the organization’s IT or security administrator.
Provider-specific instructions
ChatGPT connected apps
OpenAI’s documented route is Settings > Plugins, select the relevant app, open its connected-account or connection menu, and choose Disconnect. The exact menu wording can vary by connection. OpenAI says disconnecting stops future access through that account. Check for other active accounts or workspace-admin connections: disconnecting a personal account does not necessarily remove those other connections. OpenAI also distinguishes app action permissions from provider authorization; changing action settings does not itself disconnect the account or revoke the authorization. Google Account
In your Google Account, review linked apps that have access to account data and remove the relevant app. Google notes that access levels vary, from basic profile information to viewing, copying, or managing data. Removing access stops the linked app from accessing the account, but you may need to contact the developer to ask for deletion of information it already holds. See Google Account Help: Manage connections between your Google Account and third parties.
For developers and technical operators, Google’s OAuth policy says to revoke user tokens when access is no longer needed and delete those tokens from the application or system after revocation. Google’s web-server OAuth documentation says revocation invalidates access and refresh tokens issued under the OAuth project; this describes Google OAuth, not a universal guarantee for other providers. Microsoft work or school account
For permissions you personally consented to, Microsoft documents using the My Apps portal: open the app’s manage option and select Revoke Permissions. The user cannot revoke permissions listed as administrator-consented there; contact the organization’s administrator. Removing permission may break some app functionality. For a tenant-level grant or suspected security incident, ask the Microsoft Entra administrator to inspect the app and remove the relevant grant. See Microsoft’s My Apps instructions.

For supported third-party apps authorized to access iCloud Mail, Calendar, or Contacts, sign in at account.apple.com, open Sign-In and Security > Account Data Sharing, then select Remove access for the app. Apple says the app cannot access that data again until you authorize it again. If the app used an app-specific password, revoke that password separately. See Apple’s Account Data Sharing instructions.

GitHub
Review personal app authorizations under Settings > Applications > Authorized GitHub Apps and select Revoke for the relevant app. Only the person who authorized a GitHub App can revoke that authorization. An organization owner can uninstall an app from the organization account, preventing it from accessing resources in that account. If a coding agent had repository access, check both personal authorizations and organization installations. See GitHub’s authorization instructions.

- It stops future access through the grant or credential you revoked. For example, Google says removing a linked app stops its access to Google Account data, and Apple says a removed app cannot access the data again until authorized.
- It does not guarantee deletion of data already received. Ask the AI provider or app developer to delete retained information, and consider separately whether you need to remove exported files, shared documents, conversation history, or logs.
- It may cover only one access path or account. Check for multiple connected accounts, admin-managed grants, API keys, app-specific passwords, sessions, and other integrations.
- Changing what the agent is allowed to do is not necessarily revoking its account access. Remove the provider-side grant as well as changing product settings when you want to stop that authorization.
Google describes the authority behind OAuth in direct terms: “OAuth 2.0 tokens are entrusted to you by users who give you permission to act and access data on their behalf.” See Google for Developers’ OAuth 2.0 Policies.

If you suspect the agent or a credential was misused
- Preserve relevant account or API usage details before they disappear.
- Review unfamiliar sign-ins, connected apps, and API activity.
- Revoke the grant and any separate credentials the agent could use.
- Secure the associated sign-in account, end suspicious sessions, and enable MFA.
- Contact the account provider or workplace security team if you find activity you did not authorize.
