Revoke an AI agent’s access in layers: stop its execution or identity from obtaining access, revoke the credentials and permissions held by each connected service, then verify that those services deny access. Disabling an agent alone may leave API keys, OAuth grants, refresh tokens, shared credentials, or downstream permissions usable.
1. Map the agent’s identity and reachable access
Before removing permissions, identify what must be contained. The agent’s orchestration screen may not show every permission enforced by connected services, so trace its effective access across the runtime and downstream systems.

- Record the agent’s owner, purpose, environment, runtime, and identity provider.
- List its tools, plugins, MCP servers, APIs, data stores, delegated user accounts, service principals, and roles.
- For each connection, identify credentials and authorization paths: access and refresh tokens, API keys, service-account secrets, app installations, SSH keys, OAuth grants, and stored connector credentials.
- Check effective permissions in the connected services, not only the scopes displayed in the agent interface. Note the approved data and tools so you can distinguish intended access from excess access.
Dedicated identities make it easier to isolate one agent without disrupting unrelated users or automations. Keep an inventory that associates each identity with its owner, approved scope, credentials, and downstream services. Where available, retain logs that identify the agent, effective scope, action, resource, correlation ID, and acting user.

2. Stop the agent from continuing to act
Use the narrowest control that contains the situation, while accounting for the possibility that the agent can authenticate through a separate identity or credential.

Microsoft Entra Agent ID
To disable one agent identity, go to Entra ID > Agents > Agent identities and disable the identity. Microsoft documents that an administrator with at least the Agent ID Administrator role can perform this object-scoped action. It prevents that identity from receiving tokens and authenticating while retaining its metadata.
For broader containment, Microsoft Entra Conditional Access policies can block token issuance for agent identities or agent user accounts, or prevent humans from signing into agents. These policies can affect a wider population than disabling one identity; Microsoft recommends evaluating them in report-only mode before enforcement. Blocking authentication does not prevent new agent identities from being created, which requires separate creation restrictions. A tenant may also contain agents that do not have an Entra agent identity.
Other runtimes and identity systems
Use the runtime’s documented stop or disable control if available, but confirm exactly what it blocks. A runtime switch may stop execution without disabling a separately issued identity or revoking credentials already held by connected services.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
3. Revoke access in each connected service
Once the agent is stopped, revoke its authorization at the service or identity provider that issued or enforces it. Work through the inventory service by service; a control in one platform does not automatically reach every downstream permission.
- Revoke the agent’s grants, tokens, keys, roles, app installations, and delegated user access in each connected service.
- Revoke renewal paths as well as current access tokens. Remove or invalidate refresh tokens where the service supports it.
- Rotate or replace any credential that may have been exposed, and remove stale permissions or grants.
- Record which control was applied, its scope, and any credential types or systems it did not affect.
GitHub Enterprise Cloud
GitHub Enterprise’s actions to revoke SSO authorization and to delete keys and tokens have different effects. Revoking SSO authorization removes authorization for supported credentials, but does not necessarily delete those credentials or their other permissions. The documented bulk actions do not affect GitHub App installation tokens, deploy keys, or GitHub Actions GITHUB_TOKEN access; review those separately. Feature availability depends on the enterprise’s Enterprise Managed Users or SAML SSO configuration, and bulk changes can disrupt automations. Check the current credential-type list and the enterprise’s configuration before relying on a bulk action.
Okta agent token exchange
In Okta’s documented agent token-exchange flow, an OAuth STS access token can be revoked at the authorization server’s /oauth2/v1/revoke endpoint. If a valid refresh token remains, the agent may be able to obtain another access token. Handle the applicable refresh-token or user-consent path as well when complete containment is required.

Civic Hub connections
Civic documents two hub-level options: revoke an individual MCP server connection, or delete a toolkit to sever all server connections within it. Neither action should be treated as provider-level revocation: Civic says these hub actions do not revoke the provider’s OAuth grant, stop local actions, undo prior calls, or guarantee that cached context is cleared. Take any additional action required in the provider or local environment.
4. Verify containment and investigate what happened
Do not treat a successful administrative action as proof that every access path is closed. Validate denial at each relevant enforcement point using the platform’s approved administrative method. Check whether the identity can authenticate, whether tokens can still be issued or renewed, and whether downstream services reject requests.
Review Entra sign-in records, audit logs, application permission activity logs, and the connected tools’ own logs for continued access, unexpected token issuance, permission changes, and actions taken before containment. Preserve the records needed to establish the agent’s scope and impact. GitHub documents audit events for its authorization-revocation and token-deletion actions.

Revocation can prevent future access only where the relevant control is enforced; it cannot undo completed actions. Determine whether messages, file changes, deployments, exports, or other operations require separate remediation.
5. Restore access only after cleanup
If the interruption was an intentional hold or false alarm, restore only the intended identity and scope after confirming its authorization. For a compromise, Microsoft advises rotating credentials before re-enabling the agent or retiring its identity. Test the full revocation path—including identity disablement, credential rotation, token invalidation, and downstream permission removal—before relying on it again.
How to choose between revocation controls
| Check | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Scope | Does the control affect one agent, one identity, a credential type, a group, or the whole tenant or enterprise? |
| Blocked access | Does it stop new authentication or token issuance, invalidate an existing token, end a refresh path, remove a grant or key, or revoke a downstream role? |
| Coverage | Does it reach every connected service, delegated user, shared credential, and local execution path? |
| Disruption and recovery | Which users, workflows, or automations will fail, and what must be restored afterward? |
| Evidence | Will the action and subsequent denials appear in audit, sign-in, and application logs? |
These distinctions matter in practice: Entra offers both individual identity controls and broader policies, while GitHub separates SSO authorization revocation from credential deletion and documents exceptions. Choose the control based on the access path that must be closed, then verify its actual effect.
