How to Revoke an AI Agent’s Access to Google Workspace, Slack, and GitHub

Identify every credential an AI agent uses, then revoke or block it separately in Google Workspace, Slack, and GitHub. This guide explains the exact scopes, roles, side effects, propagation delays, and verification steps.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To revoke an AI agent’s access, first identify the exact application and credential it uses, then disable or delete that authorization separately in Google Workspace, Slack, and GitHub. Stopping the agent process or deleting a local configuration does not revoke tokens that are already valid.

The correct action depends on scope: one user’s grant, one token, a whole Slack app, a Google organizational unit, a GitHub organization, or an enterprise. Record the identity, credential type, action, time, and verification result for each service. Policy changes and reporting screens can lag, so a stale list is not by itself proof that access still works or has been removed.

Start with an access inventory

Do not begin by deleting the agent. An integration may have several independent credentials: a Google OAuth grant, a Slack bot token and user token, a GitHub OAuth app grant, a GitHub App user authorization, an installation token, a personal access token, a deploy key, or a short-lived Actions token. Removing one does not automatically remove the others.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify the application and credential path

  1. Name the agent and its owner. Record the service account, human account, workspace, organization, enterprise, repository, and environment in which it runs.
  2. Locate the client or app identity. Use deployment configuration, the secrets manager, OAuth consent records, app manifests, and provider audit data. Capture client IDs, app names, installation IDs, and token owners without copying secret values into the incident record.
  3. Map every credential to a platform scope. A user grant may affect only one person, while an app installation can reach an entire organization. Note requested services and scopes, repositories, channels, and Google organizational units.
  4. Preserve evidence before changing access. Export relevant audit entries, token metadata, timestamps, and the agent’s configuration. Avoid printing live tokens in tickets or chat.

Use the following decision points before taking action:

Revoke access in Google Workspace

Google provides two related controls that should not be conflated. Manage App Access sets an app-access policy for an organization or organizational unit. Reviewing and revoking a user’s existing third-party OAuth token is a separate administrative operation. Use both when the incident requires immediate containment and removal of an existing grant.

Block the app with Manage App Access

  1. Sign in to the Google Admin console with an account that has the Security settings administrator privilege.
  2. Open Security > Access and data control > API controls > Manage App Access. Google documents this control in Control which apps access Google Workspace data.
  3. Review both Configured apps and Accessed apps. The Accessed apps view identifies users, requested Google services, and OAuth scopes associated with the app.
  4. Select the agent’s app. Confirm the client identity, publisher details, users, services, and scopes so that you do not block a similarly named application.
  5. Change the app’s access setting to Blocked when the objective is to prevent the app from accessing Google data.
  6. Choose whether the policy applies to the entire organization or only selected organizational units. A narrower organizational-unit policy limits disruption but may leave the agent active elsewhere.
  7. Save the policy and record the selected scope, administrator, timestamp, and app identity.

Google states that app-access changes can take up to 24 hours to take effect. Do not treat a successful save as proof that every existing session has already stopped; continue with token review and live verification.

Review and revoke user-granted OAuth tokens

For an incident involving a token that a user previously granted, use an administrator account with the privileges required to review and revoke third-party OAuth tokens. Google’s Administrator privilege definitions describe the relevant administrative capabilities. Identify each affected user and revoke the agent’s grant rather than assuming that an app policy change has erased every existing authorization.

Keep the scope explicit in your record: “app blocked for the organization,” “token revoked for user A,” or both. If the app was authorized by several users, inspect and handle each grant that is in scope.

Understand Google’s restricted-service behavior

Google Workspace Admin Help says: “If you change access to Restricted, any previously installed apps that you haven’t trusted stop working, and tokens are revoked.” This statement describes the Restricted-service control; it is not a promise that every possible app-setting change revokes every token. Apply the setting only after checking which Google services and organizational units it covers.

Google also documents automatic OAuth 2.0 token revocation after a password change for tokens accessing certain products. That behavior is limited and should not replace an explicit review of the agent’s grants. See Automatic OAuth 2.0 token revocation upon password change for the documented conditions.

Verify Google containment

  • Confirm the app is shown as Blocked for the intended organization or organizational unit.
  • Confirm the affected user grants were revoked where required.
  • Attempt a new OAuth authorization with a controlled test account only if your incident procedure permits it; a blocked app should not obtain Google data.
  • Check the agent’s logs for failed token use and record the response without exposing the token.
  • Allow for the Accessed apps list to update. Google says that list can be updated 48 hours after a token is granted or revoked, so a stale entry is not reliable evidence of current access.

Revoke access in Slack

Slack offers a targeted operation for one token and a broader operation for removing the app from a workspace. Choose the smallest action that meets the incident requirement, unless the app itself is untrusted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Revoke a single API token with auth.revoke

Use Slack’s auth.revoke method when one exposed or unwanted token must be invalidated while other installations or app functions remain in place. Submit the token to the method through your approved API client; do not paste it into a shell history, ticket, or shared document.

Slack’s auth.revoke method returns a revoked boolean. Treat a response with revoked: true as confirmation that Slack accepted the revocation request, then test the integration with that credential and inspect your secret store for copies that must also be removed or rotated.

Revoking one token is not the same as uninstalling the app. Other tokens, configurations, or installations can continue to work.

Uninstall the app from the workspace

Use Slack’s apps.uninstall operation, or the workspace administration interface for removing installed apps, when the entire agent application must be removed from a workspace. Confirm the workspace and app identity before approving the action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Slack documents that app-wide removal can revoke all of the app’s tokens in that workspace. Depending on the app and token, removal can also remove the bot user, slash commands under the documented condition, and incoming webhooks associated with the bot token. These side effects can disrupt workflows that are unrelated to the immediate agent, so notify owners and preserve configuration needed for recovery.

Account for other Slack revocation paths

Slack’s OAuth guidance says revocation can occur when a workspace owner fully uninstalls an app, when a user individually removes their configurations, or when the account that initially authenticated the app is deactivated. The same documentation states: “OAuth tokens do not expire.” Waiting for time to pass is therefore not a revocation plan. Use the OAuth installation guidance at Installing via OAuth authorization code flow to identify which installation and account created the authorization.

Slack’s developer FAQ recommends auth.revoke for one token and apps.uninstall for complete app removal. Select the method that matches your intended scope rather than using an app uninstall merely because it is easier.

Verify Slack containment

  1. For a single-token action, call the agent’s normal Slack operation with the revoked credential in a controlled test and confirm authentication fails.
  2. For an uninstall, check the workspace’s installed-app list and confirm the agent app is absent or marked uninstalled.
  3. Check for remaining user tokens, bot tokens, webhooks, or separately installed copies of the app.
  4. Review Slack and infrastructure logs for continued requests, then rotate or delete stored copies of credentials.
  5. Record whether the action removed one token or the entire workspace installation, including features that were intentionally taken offline.

Revoke access in GitHub

GitHub requires credential-specific handling. An OAuth app authorization, a GitHub App user authorization, a GitHub App installation, a personal access token, a deploy key, and an Actions GITHUB_TOKEN are different credentials. Revoking one does not automatically invalidate the others.

Use this credential map before acting

GitHub credential Who or what it represents Containment direction
OAuth app access token A user’s authorization of an OAuth application Revoke the user’s authorization, deny the app at an organization when appropriate, or delete the user-specific authorization through the REST API
GitHub App user access or refresh token A user-authorized GitHub App acting on that user’s behalf The user revokes authorization; organization or enterprise owners contain organization-resource access by suspending or uninstalling the app
GitHub App installation token An installation of a GitHub App on an organization or repositories Contain the installation or suspend/uninstall the app at the organization or enterprise scope
Personal access token A token issued to an individual user Revoke or delete that token using the account or enterprise controls applicable to its token type
Deploy key An SSH key attached to a repository Remove the key from the repository and replace any dependent deployment credential
Actions GITHUB_TOKEN A workflow token issued for a job Contain the workflow, repository, or organization exposure and investigate any secrets or credentials the workflow accessed

GitHub’s credential types reference explains these categories. If the evidence does not identify the credential, stop and determine it before choosing a revocation control.

Remove an OAuth app grant for a user

The user who authorized an OAuth app can revoke that authorization from personal settings. An organization owner can also deny an OAuth app’s access to the organization when the app should no longer reach organization resources. Denying organization access is not the same as deleting every user’s global authorization.

For a programmatic, user-specific removal, GitHub provides REST API endpoints for OAuth authorizations. The deletion operation requires the app’s client ID and a valid access token and deletes all OAuth tokens associated with that application for that user. Follow the current endpoint requirements in REST API endpoints for OAuth authorizations. Validate the target user and client ID before sending a deletion request because the operation affects all tokens for that app and user.

Contain a GitHub App user authorization or installation

A user can revoke their authorization of a GitHub App. GitHub notes that this user revocation applies across all organizations, not just one organization. Treat it as a broad user-level action and coordinate with the user before execution when other legitimate workflows depend on the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Organization or enterprise owners can suspend or uninstall a GitHub App to prevent it from accessing organization resources. Do not tell an organization owner that they can directly revoke a member’s GitHub App user authorization; that authorization belongs to the user. Use app suspension or uninstall for organization-resource containment, and use user revocation for the user authorization itself.

When an incident involves several credential types, consult GitHub’s enterprise incident-response guidance, Revoking authorizations or deleting credentials in your enterprise. Its response table helps match the action to the credential and user, organization, or enterprise scope.

Handle other GitHub credentials separately

If the agent used a personal access token, deploy key, or workflow token, do not assume an OAuth-app or GitHub-App action covers it. Revoke the specific token, remove the repository key, or contain the workflow and its dependent secrets using the controls for that credential. Preserve evidence first, then inspect security and audit logs relevant to the affected edition and scope. GitHub’s incident guidance should be the authority for the exact response and available log events; do not assume every action produces the same event everywhere.

Verify GitHub containment

  • Confirm the OAuth authorization, GitHub App authorization, installation, token, or key is shown as revoked, suspended, uninstalled, or deleted at the intended scope.
  • Test the agent’s previous API operation with a controlled request and verify that it can no longer authenticate or access the protected repository or organization.
  • Search for additional installations, user authorizations, personal access tokens, deploy keys, and CI secrets belonging to the same agent.
  • Review security and audit logs, preserving timestamps and actor identities without claiming an event exists unless it is documented for your GitHub edition.

Run a coordinated revocation and verification

For an agent operating across all three services, use a written runbook so that one platform is not overlooked while another is being contained.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Freeze changes to the agent. Disable deployments or automation that could immediately reauthorize the app, while preserving the configuration and logs needed for investigation.
  2. Inventory every credential. Map each secret or authorization to a provider, owner, scope, creation path, and last observed use.
  3. Contain the broadest active risk first. If an app installation can access an entire organization or workspace, suspend, block, or uninstall it when the incident requires organization-wide containment. Use a single-token revocation when only one credential is compromised and other app functions must remain available.
  4. Execute the provider-specific action. Apply Google’s app policy and user-token controls, Slack’s auth.revoke or apps.uninstall, and GitHub’s credential-matched authorization, installation, token, key, or workflow action.
  5. Remove local copies and rotate dependent secrets. Delete revoked values from secret stores, CI variables, agent memory, and deployment manifests. A provider-side revocation does not remove a plaintext copy from your infrastructure.
  6. Verify with a live, least-privilege test. Attempt the former operation using a controlled request and confirm denial. Do not use production data merely to prove that access is gone.
  7. Recheck after propagation windows. Google documents up to 24 hours for app-access changes and up to 48 hours for Accessed apps reporting. Slack and GitHub actions should be verified through their current controls and a live authentication test rather than an assumed universal delay.
  8. Document the final state. Record what was revoked, the identity and scope, administrator or user who performed it, timestamps, side effects, verification evidence, and any credentials still requiring action.

Common mistakes that leave an agent connected

  • Deleting only the agent process: provider-issued tokens can remain valid after the process is gone.
  • Blocking an app but ignoring user grants: Google app policy and existing user-token revocation are related but distinct controls.
  • Uninstalling Slack when one token was the problem: app-wide removal can take down bot users, commands, and webhooks that other teams still need.
  • Revoking a GitHub OAuth grant while a GitHub App installation remains: the installation is a separate authorization path.
  • Assuming GitHub organization owners can revoke a member’s GitHub App user authorization: owners can suspend or uninstall the app for organization-resource containment; the user controls their own authorization.
  • Waiting for expiration: Slack explicitly states that OAuth tokens do not expire, and other credentials have their own lifecycles.
  • Using a reporting list as real-time proof: Google’s documented reporting delay means the Accessed apps list can remain stale after a successful revocation.
  • Failing to search for duplicates: a second token, installation, webhook, deploy key, or CI secret can keep the same agent operational.

What a complete revocation record contains

A defensible record should let another administrator reproduce the decision without receiving a secret. Include:

  • Agent name, owner, environment, and incident or change number.
  • Provider, app or client identifier, credential type, authorizing identity, and affected organization, workspace, repository, or organizational unit.
  • Exact action: Google app blocked or user grant revoked; Slack token revoked or app uninstalled; GitHub authorization deleted, app denied, app suspended, installation removed, token revoked, key removed, or workflow contained.
  • Administrator or user identity, timestamp in UTC, expected propagation or reporting delay, and links to the provider documentation used.
  • Verification request, observed denial or removal, remaining credentials, and follow-up rotation or monitoring tasks.

Once every credential path has been removed or intentionally retained, keep monitoring for failed authentication attempts and unexpected reauthorization. Re-enable an integration only after its scopes, owner, and replacement credentials have been reviewed.
