These are separate controls: removing an agent’s permission does not necessarily revoke the app’s account link, and revoking a token may not end an app-created session immediately. Verify each layer independently.
Revoke access in the right control planes
Start by identifying what you want to stop. A personal connection may involve only your AI host and an external account; a managed deployment can also involve workspace approval, an organization-wide app installation, user provisioning, and agent access to particular channels or workflows. Those controls may be owned by different administrators.

| Control | What it changes | Who may control it |
|---|---|---|
| Agent permission | Stops a particular agent from interacting with an app where the provider exposes agent-specific access. | User or administrator, depending on the service. |
| AI-host connection | Stops the host from using the connected account through that connection. | The user who connected it, or the AI workspace administrator. |
| Provider authorization | Removes an app’s granted access to an external account or data. | The account holder or the connected service’s administrator. |
| Organization policy or app installation | Blocks or removes an app for a workspace, organization, or set of users. | The relevant provider or organization administrator. |
| Tokens and app sessions | Invalidates credentials already issued to the app; some sessions may need to be ended by the app itself. | The provider and, for app-created sessions, the app owner. |
Use this sequence to contain a connection
- Map the connection. Record the AI agent and host, each connected provider account, the exact app name, who authorized it, and whether it is personal, workspace-managed, or organization-wide. Note the permissions or scopes displayed by the provider. Include deployed channels and workflows.
- Stop use through the AI host. Disconnect the relevant account or remove the agent’s connection using the host’s controls. This addresses access through the host; it does not, by itself, prove that the external provider revoked the app’s authorization.
- Remove the provider’s grant. In the connected account’s security or linked-app settings, remove the AI app’s authorization. If the provider offers a separate agent permission, decide whether to remove that too or instead of the broader app grant.
- Contain managed access. Ask the administrator who owns the relevant control plane to block the app, revoke its permission, disable sign-ins, remove its installation, or deprovision its account as appropriate. Check the provider’s stated policy propagation window.
- Invalidate existing credentials and sessions. Revoke tokens using the provider’s controls, and use the target app’s session or sign-out controls where available. Token revocation and app uninstall are not always the same action.
- Verify and keep a record. Confirm the status in the host, provider account or admin console, and app/session layer. Record the account, app, scopes, responsible owner, action, timestamp, and evidence. For managed incidents, ask the app owner or check available logs to confirm existing sessions and tokens are rejected. Recheck after any documented propagation period.
Removing access prevents future authorized use; it does not automatically erase data the app already received or copied. Contact the third party to request deletion if needed. Google’s guidance makes this distinction for data already shared with third-party apps.

ChatGPT-connected apps
Disconnect a user’s app account
In ChatGPT, open Settings > Plugins, select the app or plugin, review its connected accounts, and disconnect the account when that option is available. OpenAI also describes disconnecting apps from Settings > Plugins in its connected apps guidance and its account connection instructions. A connected third-party app may provide a separate unlink control, so check that service’s account settings as well.

Disable a workspace app
A ChatGPT workspace administrator or owner can disable an app in workspace settings or in the Admin Console’s workspace Plugins area. The person who administers the connected provider may be different from the ChatGPT workspace administrator; involve both if provider-side authorization also needs removal.
Permission choices such as “Always ask” or approval before read actions govern when ChatGPT asks before using an existing connection; they do not revoke the authorization granted when the app was connected. OpenAI states, “App permissions do not grant an app new access.” Use disconnect or the workspace app controls to remove access, rather than relying on a prompt preference.

Google Account and Google Workspace
Remove an app’s access to a personal Google Account
Open Google Account linked apps, find the app, and under Access to your Google Account inspect its permissions and choose Remove access. Google says the app can then no longer access the Google Account. If the app already received data, request deletion from the third party separately.
Remove an agent’s permission separately
Google provides an agent-specific control in linked apps: find the app (or filter for agent access), select it, and choose Stop using [app name] for the agent. This removes that agent’s permission to interact with the app, but it does not disconnect or delete the Google Account link to the app. Google explicitly notes, “Removing an agent’s access does not disconnect or delete your Google Account’s link with that app.” If the goal is to revoke the app’s underlying account access too, use Remove access as well.

Apply a Google Workspace policy
A Google Workspace administrator can manage third-party access in the Admin console at Security > Access and data control > API controls > Manage App Access. The documented access levels include Trusted, Specific Google data, Limited, and Blocked. Choose the policy appropriate to the organization’s needs; Google says a policy change can take up to 24 hours to propagate, typically less. This is a Workspace policy window, not a general estimate for personal-account revocation or every OAuth token. See Google Workspace’s app access instructions.
Microsoft Entra ID: revoke identity access and handle residual sessions
For an identity managed through Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft’s emergency guidance covers blocking new sign-ins and revoking refresh tokens. Those actions do not guarantee that every already-issued credential or app session stops instantly. Microsoft says Entra access tokens last 1 hour by default; a previously issued token may remain usable until expiry unless the application or a supported near-real-time mechanism rejects it. Browser-based apps may also hold their own session token, which Entra ID cannot directly revoke. The app must end that session under its own policy. Follow Microsoft’s emergency access revocation guidance and involve the app owner to confirm the app rejects remaining tokens and sessions.

For app access that should end with a user’s removal, Microsoft recommends deprovisioning the user from applications, including apps that do not support automatic provisioning. Entra provisioning typically runs every 20–40 minutes; this is the service’s typical provisioning run interval, not a guarantee that access will end within that time. Microsoft’s guidance on revocation and deprovisioning also advises applications to revoke their own sessions.

Slack: distinguish a token from an installed app
Slack’s auth.revoke method revokes a single token and returns a revoked boolean. Revoking a bot user token deactivates the bot user and removes its channel memberships, but does not uninstall the bot or app. See Slack’s auth.revoke documentation.
To remove an app and its tokens, use Slack’s apps.uninstall method or remove the app through workspace administration. Slack distinguishes this from single-token revocation in its developer FAQ. For an organization-wide app, Slack says an organization admin must remove it in the admin console to remove it completely from an organization or workspace.
Check each ChatGPT Agents in Slack setup layer
For ChatGPT Agents in Slack on Enterprise Grid, OpenAI describes setup at three levels: organization-level Slack approval, adding the app to selected Slack workspaces, and a member’s ChatGPT connection to an approved workspace. When containing an agent, review the applicable organization approval, workspace installation, user connection, and agent channel configuration. The OpenAI setup guide describes those layers; do not assume removing one level automatically revokes the others.
Quick Recap
Why access can persist after a revoke action
- You removed only one layer. An agent permission, AI-host connection, provider OAuth grant, organization installation, and app session are distinct controls. Check the layer that still permits use.
- An issued credential remains valid. A provider may continue to accept an access token until expiry unless the provider or app rejects it sooner. Microsoft’s default one-hour Entra token lifetime is one provider-specific example, not a universal rule.
- The target app has its own session. Ending provider authorization may not invalidate an app-created browser or service session; use the app’s session controls or ask its administrator to invalidate it.
- A managed policy has not propagated. For Google Workspace app access policy, allow for Google’s stated propagation period and verify the resulting policy state.
- Data was already copied. Revocation governs future access, not deletion of information the app previously received. Request deletion from the app provider separately if that is required.
