Prefix suggestions, substring matches, typo correction, and ranked full-text search are different problems; no single index or dataset-size threshold is right for all of them.
Start by defining what autocomplete must match
Before choosing a database or search-engine feature, write down the behavior the interface needs. A user typing the start of a name needs prefix matching. Finding a word in the middle of a title is an infix search. Correcting a misspelling calls for similarity or fuzzy matching. Returning relevant documents from several terms is full-text search. Combining these into one vague “autocomplete” requirement can lead to an index that is expensive to maintain and still misses the expected results.
- Prefix: suggest values that begin with the typed characters, such as “mar” matching “Marina.”
- Infix: find a term within indexed text, not only at its start.
- Typo tolerance: retrieve plausible alternatives when the query is misspelled.
- Full text: match analyzed words and rank documents, often across multiple terms.
Also decide whether results must be filtered, ranked, or immediately reflect recent writes. These requirements affect index choice and how you should measure performance.
Choose an index for the query shape
The following options address different workloads; they are not interchangeable performance tiers. Each shifts costs among retrieval behavior, index size, update work, and operational complexity.

| Approach | Best aligned with | Trade-offs and checks |
|---|---|---|
| PostgreSQL full-text search with GIN | Tokenized document search and ranking over a tsvector. |
The indexed expression and query need matching text-search configurations. GIN is the preferred PostgreSQL full-text index, but indexes add overhead. See PostgreSQL full-text tables and indexes and PostgreSQL index types for text search. |
PostgreSQL pg_trgm with GiST or GIN |
Similarity, typo candidates, and substring-like LIKE/ILIKE searches. |
Effectiveness depends on extractable trigrams; very short patterns can fall back to a full-index scan. GiST can support nearest-distance ordering with <->; GIN cannot. See PostgreSQL 17 pg_trgm documentation. |
| Elasticsearch completion suggester | Explicit navigational suggestions, such as known names or titles. | Uses a fast lookup structure that costs more to build and lives in memory. Multi-shard requests add a fetch phase. See Elastic suggester examples. |
Elasticsearch search_as_you_type |
Prefix and infix completion from indexed text. | Creates analyzed subfields, including shingle and prefix data. More shingle subfields can make matching more specific but increase index size. See Elastic search-as-you-type field documentation. |
| Redis autocomplete | Ranked prefix suggestions from a maintained suggestion dictionary. | Uses a trie-based structure. Fuzzy searches on very short prefixes can traverse a large part of the dictionary. See Redis autocomplete documentation. |
Set up PostgreSQL full-text search correctly
For tokenized document search, PostgreSQL documents a GIN index on an expression such as to_tsvector('english', body). The query must use the same explicit text-search configuration for PostgreSQL to use that expression index as intended. Configuration is part of the indexed expression, not a cosmetic option.
Another documented pattern is to store a generated tsvector column and index it with GIN. That avoids recalculating to_tsvector to verify matches, while an expression index is simpler and uses less disk space because the tsvector representation is not stored separately. Choose based on your storage and query needs, then validate the actual query plan. PostgreSQL’s examples and details are in its full-text search tables and indexes documentation.
PostgreSQL calls GIN the preferred full-text index. GiST is lossy and can return false matches that require checking rows; its signature size trades a larger index footprint for more precise searches. These are design trade-offs, not a guarantee of a particular latency at a particular table size. See PostgreSQL’s text-search index guidance.

Use trigram matching for similarity and substring queries
The pg_trgm extension builds groups of three consecutive characters and provides GiST and GIN operator classes for similarity search. It can also accelerate trigram-based LIKE, ILIKE, and regular-expression searches without requiring a left-anchored pattern.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPattern length matters. PostgreSQL extracts trigrams from a search pattern to narrow candidates; a pattern with no extractable trigrams can degenerate to a full-index scan. That makes very short queries a critical test case if your interface searches as soon as a user types. The documentation also distinguishes the index types: GiST can efficiently support nearest-distance ordering with <->, while GIN cannot. Trigrams can help suggest spellings that full-text search misses, but they are not a substitute for testing the query operators your application uses. See the PostgreSQL 17 pg_trgm documentation.
Choose between Elasticsearch completion fields
Completion suggester for a controlled suggestion list
Elastic’s completion suggester indexes explicit suggestion inputs in a fast lookup structure stored in memory. It is a fit when you maintain known suggestions—such as names or titles—and want navigational completions rather than arbitrary matching across all document text. Its lookup structure costs more to build. Requests spanning multiple shards require a two-phase process; Elastic says a single shard is more performant for completion in appropriate circumstances, but that is not a universal shard-count rule. Shard size and heap pressure still matter, and high heap use may call for splitting an index. See Elastic’s suggester documentation.

Search-as-you-type for indexed text
The search_as_you_type field creates an analyzed root field, shingle subfields, and an _index_prefix subfield. It supports prefix and infix completion; prefix queries can be rewritten to terms in the prefix subfield. Adding more shingle subfields enables more specific matching but increases index size. Use this approach when suggestions should come from indexed text rather than a separately curated list, and account for the extra index data in storage and update planning. See Elastic’s field-type documentation.
Keep Redis fuzzy matching constrained
Redis documents ranked prefix suggestions backed by a trie: weights help rank suggestions, and the trie is traversed to find top suffixes matching a prefix. Its documentation warns that fuzzy matching on very short prefixes can traverse an enormous part of the suggestion dictionary; a fuzzy query for a single letter traverses the entire dictionary.
Treat typo tolerance as an opt-in behavior to constrain and benchmark, rather than turning it on for every keystroke. For example, evaluate fuzzy matching only after a longer prefix or in a separate fallback path, and confirm that its candidate set and ranking fit your latency objective. The exact constraint is application-specific; Redis’s documentation establishes the short-prefix risk, not a universal safe minimum. See Redis autocomplete documentation.

Benchmark the workload that will actually run
There is no universal row-count threshold at which one autocomplete strategy becomes necessary. PostgreSQL notes that indexes let a server retrieve specific rows much faster, while also adding overhead to the database as a whole; Elastic’s specialized fields likewise trade additional index data or memory for retrieval behavior. Base the choice on your corpus and workload, not an arbitrary dataset-size rule. See PostgreSQL’s index overview.
Build a representative test before committing to an architecture. Include the actual query distribution and result ranking, not just a handful of long, easy prefixes.
- Match behavior: test prefix, infix, typo, and full-text queries separately.
- Query distribution: include common and rare terms, very short inputs, and prefixes that return many candidates.
- Filters and ranking: use the same filters, sort order, and result limit as the application.
- Writes and freshness: model the real update rate and measure how quickly changes become searchable.
- Concurrency and latency: test expected concurrent traffic and track tail latency, not only an average.
- Resource cost: record index size, memory use where relevant, and the cost of building or updating the index.
Record the engine and version, hosting or hardware setup, dataset shape, cache assumptions, concurrency, and latency percentile with each result. No benchmark result is established here, so use your own representative measurements rather than assuming a published speed or scale guarantee.

Make the decision against explicit constraints
Use the least complex approach that meets the required matching behavior and measured latency target. A PostgreSQL GIN index is a natural candidate for tokenized full-text ranking; pg_trgm fits similarity and substring matching when patterns provide useful trigrams. Elasticsearch’s completion suggester suits explicit suggestion inputs, while search_as_you_type is designed for prefix and infix matching over indexed text. Redis is suited to ranked prefix suggestions when you can maintain a suggestion dictionary and constrain fuzzy work.
For each candidate, verify that its index or suggestion structure fits your update and freshness requirements, that ranking and filters behave as intended, and that index or memory growth is acceptable. An index is useful only when it accelerates the actual query shape without creating an unacceptable write or operational burden.
