Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo review only the changes in a visual test, compare the new screenshot with an approved baseline, inspect the highlighted differences, and update the baseline only when the change is intentional. Keep the capture environment consistent so that browser or operating-system variation does not obscure real UI changes.
What a visual-test diff tells you
A baseline is a previously approved screenshot of the interface. A visual test captures the current rendering and compares it with that reference. The diff identifies pixels that changed; it does not decide whether the change is a design update or a defect. Review the changed area in context before accepting anything.

For each difference, check the affected layout, text, controls, and imagery. Consider the relevant viewport and browser captures too: a change that looks correct in one rendering may still break another.

Review changes with Playwright
Keep the capture conditions stable
Use the same browser version, operating system, settings, and capture mode for the reference and comparison runs. Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Changes in those conditions can create noise unrelated to your code. See the Playwright visual comparisons documentation.

Run the comparison and inspect failures
Playwright Test uses toHaveScreenshot() to compare a captured page with its reference image. On the first run, it generates the reference; later runs compare new captures against it. Run the visual test in the project’s established environment, then inspect each reported difference instead of treating every mismatch as a regression.
Update references only after approval
If the UI change is unintended, fix the implementation and rerun the test. If the change is intended and has been reviewed, update the reference snapshots with --update-snapshots. Review the resulting changes in version control so the new baseline is an explicit, inspectable part of the change.

Review changes in hosted services
Chromatic
Chromatic presents changed snapshots for review. Approve or reject the changes; accepting all changes updates the baselines. Its hosted review flow can be useful when the team wants to inspect and approve visual changes outside a local test run. See Chromatic’s documentation.
Percy
Percy documents approval at the build, matching-change group, or snapshot level. Check the scope before approving: a Percy snapshot covers its captured browser and width combinations, so an individual screenshot within that snapshot cannot be approved separately. See Percy’s approval documentation.
Rank #3
Argos and capture stabilization
Argos documents techniques intended to reduce capture noise, including waiting for fonts and images to settle, hiding carets and scrollbars, pausing GIFs, and stabilizing sticky elements. These are Argos-specific documented techniques, not a guarantee that every visual testing tool provides the same controls. See Argos documentation.
Choose a review workflow that fits the project
| Decision | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Where references live | Playwright keeps reference images with the project; hosted services provide web-based review workflows. |
| How differences are presented | Consider how the tool groups changed screenshots and whether reviewers can inspect them in context. |
| Approval granularity | Check whether approvals apply to an individual capture, a group of matching changes, a whole build, or multiple browser and width combinations. |
| Capture consistency | Use the same capture environment for comparisons and determine what noise controls the selected tool documents. |
| Project integration | Prefer a workflow that fits the existing test runner and CI process, so visual review is part of normal change review rather than a separate, easily missed step. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshot captures to inspect or feed into a workflow, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one GET request. It is a capture API, not a visual-regression baseline and approval system: compare its output with your approved reference using your own test or review workflow.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of the target URL:

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Troubleshoot noisy or unexpected diffs
- Many unrelated pixels changed: Check whether the operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode differs from the baseline environment.
- Fonts or images appear unsettled: Ensure the page has finished rendering those assets before capture. Argos documents waiting for fonts and images as one way to reduce this kind of noise.
- Animated content differs between runs: Consider how the test handles animation; Argos documents pausing GIFs as one stabilization technique.
- A sticky element shifts or overlays content: Check its position at capture time. Argos documents stabilizing sticky elements, but the available method depends on the tool and page.
- A change was accepted too broadly: Review the approval scope before confirming it. In Percy, an approval for a snapshot applies across its captured browsers and widths, not just one individual screenshot.
- The diff is real but its intent is unclear: Do not update the baseline yet. Confirm the expected design change with the relevant code or design review, then fix an unintended change or approve the intentional one.
