OBS encodes and broadcasts your video; Owncast is a separate, self-hosted streaming server that receives a broadcast and serves it on your own site. Owncast can make sense if you specifically want to operate that separate destination, but it adds server administration and delivery planning without replacing YouTube’s own setup.

Owncast accepts RTMP broadcasts from software such as OBS. Its manual setup uses an /live endpoint and a stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow instead asks you to enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder. The cited documentation does not establish that Owncast automatically relays a stream to YouTube, or that one OBS output reaches both services without additional configuration or tooling.

Choose the setup that matches your audience
Use OBS directly when YouTube is the destination
This is the simpler architecture for a YouTube-only audience: configure OBS with YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then monitor the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. It avoids running a separate audience-facing server.

Add Owncast only for a separate streaming site
Choose Owncast if you have a concrete reason to serve viewers through your own site and accept the work of keeping that server secure, available and sized for its viewers. Its outbound bandwidth depends on viewer count and quality options; transcoding affects CPU, and object storage is described as a way to offload viewer-facing delivery bandwidth. There is no universal capacity or cost figure that fits every setup.

Prepare the bhajan channel before going live
Confirm YouTube live access
Check that live streaming is enabled and your channel is eligible. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the planned launch time.
Clear rights for the actual recording and performance
YouTube requires the creator to have the necessary rights, including music rights, and scans live streams for third-party matches. A stream may be interrupted. Even when music is licensed, the relevant rightsholder may need to allowlist your channel in Content ID for the live stream to proceed without a match-related interruption.

A bhajan’s devotional subject or age alone does not establish that a particular recording, arrangement, performance or video is cleared. Plan for a continuous stream and its replay separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be treated as one guaranteed, complete replay. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. Decide how you will preserve source material and recordings, and check that any local recording is intact.

Configure and test OBS for YouTube
Use YouTube’s destination settings
YouTube recommends H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency (not over four seconds), and RTMPS. Set the destination using the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s live workflow. Keep the key private; anyone with access may be able to broadcast to your stream.
Choose resolution, bitrate and audio settings for your actual source, upload connection and intended viewing quality. The cited guidance does not establish one bitrate that guarantees quality for every connection or bhajan stream. Test the chosen settings rather than treating an example as a promise.

Run a test before the scheduled broadcast
- In YouTube’s live workflow, confirm the channel is enabled and select the encoder setup.
- Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Do not share or publish the key.
- Set the video and audio encoding options to YouTube’s recommendations, including CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency.
- Start a private or otherwise suitable test stream, then check the YouTube preview and stream health.
- Listen and watch for audio/video problems, monitor the connection, and verify the local recording if you are recording one.
- If your plan includes a backup encoder, test the failover rather than assuming it will work during an outage.
If you use Owncast instead
- Install Owncast on a server that you can keep running and maintain; configure access to the server from your network.
- Change default administrative credentials immediately and secure both the admin account and broadcast stream key.
- In OBS, configure the Owncast RTMP
/liveendpoint and its stream key, following your Owncast instance’s setup details. - Test the stream and viewer experience, and plan server capacity around expected audience, quality options and whether transcoding is enabled.
Owncast’s compatibility guidance also recommends H.264/AAC and a two-second keyframe interval. For music-focused audio, select a rate appropriate to the material: Owncast lists audio rates as options, not universal requirements. Test for the destination you are using.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not accept the broadcast: confirm live streaming is enabled, use the current YouTube server URL and stream key, and verify the encoder is configured for the intended destination.
- The preview or stream health is poor: check the upload connection and encoder output, verify CBR and the keyframe interval, and test a lower-demand configuration if the connection cannot sustain the chosen settings.
- The live stream is interrupted after a music match: stop and review the matched material and rights documentation. Confirm that the licence covers the actual recording and live use, and contact the rightsholder about Content ID allowlisting when appropriate.
- The complete 24/7 stream is missing from archives: do not assume YouTube will capture broadcasts longer than 12 hours. Use a local recording and a separate preservation plan.
- Owncast works for you but not for viewers: check server reachability, network configuration, outbound bandwidth and the quality options being served. If transcoding is enabled, account for its CPU use.
- Owncast credentials may be exposed: change compromised credentials and stream keys, then update OBS with the new key. Do not use default admin credentials for an operating instance.
