You can schedule Quiet hours to prevent use during specified periods, but linked parental controls do not let you read your teen’s chats or watch their activity in real time. Study hours are different: they start eligible new conversations in study mode, but do not block access.
Link your account to your teen’s
- In ChatGPT, open Settings > Parental controls.
- Select Add family member and invite your teen by phone or email. Your teen must accept the invitation. Alternatively, your teen can invite you from their own Parental controls settings.
- Under Family members, select the linked teen to review or change the settings available for that account.
Linking is for managing supported settings and receiving limited safety notifications; it does not grant access to conversations. OpenAI notes that some changes may take time to apply, and some affect only new conversations. Check the displayed settings after making a change. Choose controls based on what you want to change

To schedule a limit, select the linked teen in Settings > Parental controls, open Quiet hours, and choose the start and end times. For a study-oriented schedule, configure Study hours instead; it is not a substitute for Quiet hours. OpenAI’s control descriptions explain the distinctions and note that settings can differ by account or region.

Some Work-related switches have narrow scopes. Disabling Codex network access concerns code run by ChatGPT Work connecting to online services; disabling Cloud browser concerns ChatGPT Work’s built-in browser. These controls do not govern ChatGPT search, plugins, or connectors.

Know what a parent can and cannot see
A linked parent cannot read the teen’s chat history, inspect conversations, or monitor activity in real time. OpenAI may send safety notifications in limited situations. These can include a brief description of the concern, a related account action when applicable, and support information—but not chat transcripts. Notifications are enabled by default after linking, though they may take a few hours to begin. The channels used can depend on the contact information and preferences on the account. See OpenAI’s explanation of parental controls and notifications.
Either the teen or parent can unlink the accounts at any time. If the teen unlinks, the parent is notified and loses the ability to manage that account’s settings and receive its teen safety notifications.

What teen protections do—and do not—promise
OpenAI says ChatGPT for Teens is automatically enabled for eligible accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18. It includes age-appropriate safeguards and learning-oriented features, as well as reminders that may encourage breaks. Reduce sensitive content addresses categories such as graphic violence, risky viral challenges, sexual or romantic roleplay, violent roleplay, and extreme beauty ideals or unhealthy dieting.
These safeguards lower the chance of certain responses; they do not guarantee every response will be appropriate. Treat them as an additional layer, not a replacement for talking with your teen about how they use ChatGPT and what to do when a response concerns them. What changes when a teen turns 18
When ChatGPT identifies a linked teen account as belonging to someone 18 or older, that account may leave the ChatGPT for Teens experience. In that transition, teen protections are turned off, parental controls are removed, the link ends, and teen safety notifications stop; the account holder controls their settings. OpenAI describes the automatic transition as rolling out to eligible accounts, so timing may not be identical for everyone.
The account holder can review their age category at Settings > Account. Only the account holder can complete age verification. They may be able to link with a parent again later, but must accept an invitation. Details are in OpenAI’s age-18 transition guide.

A practical way to set expectations
- Agree together on the goal: restricting access at certain times, limiting a feature, or encouraging study-mode conversations.
- Review the controls shown in the teen’s linked account rather than assuming every account has identical options or defaults.
- Explain that account linking does not give you access to chat transcripts.
- Discuss what your teen should do if a response feels unsafe or inappropriate; safeguards reduce some risks but cannot guarantee every response will be suitable.
