How to Review AI-Generated Edits Before They Change a Wiki Page

A practical review process for AI-generated wiki edits: inspect the diff, verify claims and sources, follow the wiki’s rules, and approve only what checks out.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before approving an AI-generated wiki edit, inspect the actual diff, verify every substantive claim against its source, check the target wiki’s rules, and preview the rendered page. Approve only the parts that pass review, record why they were accepted, and know how to correct or revert a saved change.

1. Confirm the edit’s scope and your permission to make it

Start with the exact page and requested change. Establish whether the AI proposal is meant to copyedit existing text, add factual material, reorganize a section, or change several pages. Those tasks carry different risks: a wording edit can alter meaning, while a batch edit can multiply a small error across pages.

Check that you have ordinary permission to edit the page. For example, MediaWiki’s AIBatchEditor documentation says the extension’s special right does not bypass a page’s existing edit restrictions. Its availability and configuration depend on the particular wiki installation. MediaWiki: AIBatchEditor

For automated edits on Wikimedia projects, consult the relevant project’s bot-approval process. Wikimedia’s AI guidance also discusses documenting the tool, providing sample edits, setting rate limits, and explaining how outputs are validated; these are project-specific guidelines, not universal requirements for every wiki. • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

2. Inspect the diff and the rendered page

Do not approve an edit based only on the prompt, a generated explanation, or an edit summary. Compare the proposed revision with the version it will replace. Check whether the edit changes meaning, removes caveats, deletes more than requested, repeats existing material, alters links, or attaches a citation to a claim it does not support.

  • Look closely at changed numbers, dates, names, definitions, and qualifications.
  • Check deletions as well as additions; missing context can make a remaining sentence misleading.
  • Review changes to templates, tables, categories, links, and formatting, not just paragraph text.
  • Investigate warnings about major deletions or a nearly empty page before saving.

When available, open a preview as well as the diff. AIBatchEditor works with wikitext and its documentation calls for extra care with complex templates and tables, which may not be easy to assess from the source alone. It provides per-page diffs and previews, and allows reviewers to re-draft, skip, or selectively approve proposed pages. MediaWiki: AIBatchEditor

3. Verify factual claims and citations

For each substantive new or rewritten claim, open the cited reference and check that it supports the exact statement. Confirm the relevant names, dates, quantities, scope, and qualifications. A plausible citation—or one supplied by an AI tool—is not evidence that the claim is accurate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check that the edit has not turned a qualified statement into a certainty, stretched a source beyond what it says, or added material that the wiki’s sourcing standards would not accept. Wikimedia’s AI guidance calls for human review or validation before AI-assisted changes are made. Its LLM Paste Check documentation also describes a prompt that asks editors to consider the origin and implications of qualifying pasted text. Wikimedia AI guidelines · MediaWiki: Edit Check

4. Check the target wiki’s AI rules

Policies differ between wikis, so verify the current rules on the specific project before approving an edit. Wikimedia’s project-policy index documents varied approaches; it lists restrictions on AI writing tools on English Wikipedia, alongside exceptions, and different approaches elsewhere. Do not assume a rule on one project applies to another. Wikimedia AI policies

Some wikis may require an AI or model disclosure in the edit summary. MediaWiki’s Edit Check documentation gives naming the LLM used as an example of a local requirement. Follow the target wiki’s current instructions rather than treating that example as a universal rule. MediaWiki: Edit Check

The LLM Paste Check is a prompt and logging feature, not a fact-check or policy approval. Its documentation says it can activate based on text length and metadata associated with certain chatbots, and that projects can configure it. A prompt—or its absence—does not establish that text is accurate, compliant, or not AI-generated. MediaWiki: LLM Paste Check

5. Approve only what passed review

If a proposal mixes sound edits with unsupported claims or unwanted changes, do not accept the whole thing just because part of it is useful. Correct or omit the problematic portions and approve only what you have checked. Write a concise, intelligible edit summary, including any disclosure required by the wiki’s rules.

In the documented AIBatchEditor workflow, only approved pages are saved. Successful edits appear in normal page history under the reviewer’s username and receive an AI Batch Editor tag. MediaWiki: AIBatchEditor

6. If an approved edit needs correction

Open the page history and inspect the exact revision diff to see what changed and whether someone edited the page afterward. Do this before using rollback: MediaWiki warns that a rollback link on a diff can undo a different combination of edits from the one displayed. Rollback is quick but inflexible and is mainly intended for clear vandalism. If only part of a saved edit is wrong, correct that part; if you revert, explain why. MediaWiki: Reverting

What to look for in a review workflow

If you are choosing a process or tool for AI-assisted wiki edits, check whether it supports the safeguards your reviewers need:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A precise before-and-after diff and a rendered preview.
  • Selective approval at the appropriate level, such as per page, with the ability to skip or correct a proposal.
  • Enforcement of ordinary page permissions.
  • Clear edit summaries, revision history, and any relevant AI-use tags.
  • Support for the wiki’s local disclosure rules and any required bot review.

AIBatchEditor documents examples of several of these capabilities, but the documentation does not establish how competing tools compare. MediaWiki: AIBatchEditor · Wikimedia AI guidelines
