How to revert to the original Gmail view from new Material You look

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gmail’s newer Material You look can be noticeably different—colors shift with your wallpaper, spacing and cards may feel “rounder,” and the app can look less like the classic Gmail UI you’re used to. If you prefer the older layout, you’re not alone, and you usually can get most of the way back.

There isn’t always a single “revert” toggle inside Gmail. In practice, the change is driven either by a Gmail theme setting or by Android’s Material You dynamic color system—so the best fix depends on which part is actually causing the new look.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What changed in the new Gmail Material You look

Material You in Android typically changes the Gmail UI by applying dynamic color palettes across the app. That means headers, highlights, buttons, and surfaces can adopt colors derived from your wallpaper (rather than sticking to the classic Gmail accent treatment).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On some devices, the Gmail experience also coincides with an app update that adjusts typography, spacing, or the way list items are visually grouped. Even when you can’t fully restore the exact prior layout, you can often return the theme behavior to something closer to the original.

Before you change anything: confirm what you’re seeing

Spend 30 seconds to identify which “new look” you’re dealing with. That determines whether you should change Gmail settings or Android display settings.

  • Colors track your wallpaper immediately: This is almost always Material You dynamic color (Android-level).
  • Gmail has a visible theme option: This is Gmail-level theming (inside the Gmail app).
  • Everything changed after a Gmail update: This may be the combination of a Gmail UI update plus dynamic colors.

If you can answer “which one,” you’ll pick the correct method and avoid wasting time on changes that won’t affect your case.

Method 1: Switch Gmail theme away from Material You (Android app)

Start with Gmail’s own theme controls. Even if Material You is enabled in Android, Gmail may still let you choose a non-dynamic theme.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Step-by-step (Gmail app on Android)

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. Tap your profile icon (top-right), or tap Menu (☰) depending on your layout.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Select the account you use in Gmail (if you have multiple accounts).
  5. Look for Theme, Appearance, or Color settings (wording varies by version).
  6. Choose Default or Classic (if available), and disable any option like Use device theme or Material You (if shown).
  7. Exit Settings and check your Inbox.

If you see a theme toggle and it offers a non-dynamic option, this is the fastest path back to something closer to the original Gmail look.

If you don’t see a Theme option

That means your particular Gmail build (or rollout state) doesn’t expose theming controls in Settings. In that case, you’ll get the best results by disabling Material You dynamic color at the Android system level (Method 2).

Method 2: Turn off Material You / dynamic color in Android

If Gmail’s colors are reflecting your wallpaper, you’re seeing Android’s dynamic color system in action. Turning it off typically forces Gmail to fall back to a more classic palette.

Step-by-step (Android 12/13/14-style settings)

  1. Open Settings on your phone.
  2. Go to Wallpaper & style (or Wallpaper on some skins).
  3. Find Colors.
  4. Turn off Use wallpaper colors / Material You / Dynamic color (exact wording varies).
  5. Go back to Gmail and refresh the app (switch away and back, or restart it).

On many Android skins, the toggle is near the wallpaper customization controls. If your device uses a custom UI (Samsung One UI, Pixel UI, Xiaomi/OPPO/realme skins), the menu names can differ, but the setting is usually still called dynamic colors or wallpaper colors.

Alternative path: disable dark theme conflicts (if your colors look “off”)

Sometimes the “new look” feels worse because dark theme and dynamic color interact with contrast. Try toggling dark mode once to test whether it’s the theme behavior or a genuine layout change.

  1. Open Settings > Display.
  2. Toggle Dark theme off, then check Gmail.

If the look becomes more familiar, you can keep dynamic color off while deciding your preferred theme (light or dark).

Method 3: Reset Gmail UI state (cache, data, and updates)

If you changed theme/dynamic color and Gmail still looks wrong, the app may have cached UI resources. Clearing cache (safe) is the first move. Clearing data (more disruptive) is a fallback.

Clear Gmail cache (recommended first)

  1. Open Settings on Android.
  2. Go to Apps (or Apps & notifications).
  3. Find and select Gmail.
  4. Tap Storage.
  5. Tap Clear cache.
  6. Reopen Gmail.

This usually forces Gmail to re-render its UI using your current theme settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clear Gmail storage/data (only if needed)

This can log you out and may remove local preferences. Use it only if cache clearing doesn’t fix the display.

  1. Settings > Apps & notifications > Gmail
  2. Storage
  3. Tap Clear storage or Clear data
  4. Confirm
  5. Open Gmail again and sign back in if prompted

Confirm you’re on the newest or a stable build (optional)

Sometimes the change you dislike is part of an ongoing UI rollout. Checking for updates can fix bugs where the wrong theme assets show up.

  1. Open Google Play Store
  2. Search Gmail
  3. Check whether Update is available

If you’re trying to revert, though, you might prefer not to update—see Method 4 for the advanced rollback route.

Method 4: Roll back Gmail to an earlier version (advanced)

When the “new Material You look” is introduced by a particular Gmail release, the only reliable way to revert the UI behavior is to run an older app version. Android doesn’t provide an official one-tap rollback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this method only if you’re comfortable with installing an APK and you understand the risks (security, account/session behavior, and losing bug fixes).

What you need

  • The Gmail version you want to install (e.g., an older build from before the UI rollout).
  • An APK source you trust (avoid random mirrors).
  • Android permissions to install unknown apps (system setting).

High-level steps

  1. Uninstall current Gmail updates (you may need to uninstall the app if uninstall is blocked by your device policy).
  2. Download the target older Gmail APK.
  3. Go to Settings > Security (or Privacy) > Install unknown apps.
  4. Allow installation from your chosen file source (e.g., Chrome).
  5. Install the APK and open Gmail.
  6. Disable automatic updates for Gmail (optional but recommended if you want to keep the older look).

Be aware: Google may re-enable the newer UI on server-side rollout even if you downgrade. Android-level theme changes (Method 2) are often more predictable than APK rollbacks.

Method 5: Compare with Gmail on iPhone, iPad, iOS, and desktop

Material You is an Android concept. If you’re using Gmail on iPhone or iPad, you won’t be controlling “Material You” the same way—so these steps won’t apply.

It’s worth checking because some people see a “new look” after switching devices or toggling dark mode.

iPhone and iPad

On iOS, look changes are usually driven by light/dark mode or the app’s built-in theme behavior, not Material You. Check your Settings > Display & Brightness and any Gmail appearance option inside iOS app settings.

Web (desktop browser) and iPad web

Gmail on the web generally uses browser styling and Gmail’s own theme controls rather than Android Material You. If your problem is strictly Android UI appearance, the web won’t reproduce it.

Android vs. web: a quick sanity check

  • If the web Inbox looks old/classic but Android looks new, your fix should focus on Android dynamic color and Gmail theme settings.
  • If both look new, it may be Gmail’s own UI rollout and theme behavior rather than Material You alone.

Common problems and troubleshooting

Even when you follow the steps, UI changes can be delayed or partially applied. Here are the most common failure modes and what to do next.

Problem: You turned off dynamic colors, but Gmail still looks themed

Try this sequence: clear Gmail cache, restart the app, then restart the phone. Some OEM skins apply wallpaper color updates in stages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Clear Gmail cache (Settings > Apps > Gmail > Storage > Clear cache)
  2. Force close Gmail and reopen it
  3. Restart the device

Problem: Theme options in Gmail don’t match what you read online

Gmail Settings labels and available toggles vary by account type, region, and rollout cohort. Your device might show Theme, Appearance, or nothing at all.

Your safest approach: treat Gmail Settings as conditional, and fall back to Method 2 (Android dynamic color). That one tends to work consistently because it changes the system palette all apps read from.

Problem: You cleared cache/data and got logged out

Sign back in normally. If the look still doesn’t revert, don’t assume the problem is “account-related.” Most UI palette issues are client-side theming or system display settings.

Problem: After changing settings, you need to force a visual refresh

On many Android devices, toggles won’t reflect instantly in running apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Switch to another app
  2. Open Gmail again
  3. If it still doesn’t change, force stop Gmail in Android settings and reopen

Problem: Material You reappears after you change your wallpaper

That’s expected. Dynamic color is tied to your wallpaper. If you want the “original Gmail look” to stay stable, keep dynamic colors off or pick a wallpaper that produces a palette you’re comfortable with.

Common mistakes that keep the new look active

  • Changing Gmail theme but leaving Android dynamic color enabled. Android palette changes can still influence Gmail styling.
  • Only clearing Gmail cache without restarting the app. Reopening the app is often required for resource refresh.
  • Relying on a screenshot from a different Android skin or Gmail version. Menu labels differ across One UI, Pixel, and other OEM builds.
  • Forgetting multiple accounts. Gmail theme/apparent appearance settings are sometimes account-specific.

What you can’t reliably revert (and what to do instead)

Some aspects of the “new Gmail look” are server-side or tightly integrated into the Gmail UI components Google rolls out gradually. That means you might not fully restore the exact older spacing and visuals.

What you can usually control reliably is the palette behavior (Material You/dynamic color) and, if available, Gmail’s theme selection. If the layout itself remains different, your best alternatives are:

  • Use Android display theme toggles (dark/light) to get a closer classic contrast.
  • Switch Gmail theme to Default/Classic if exposed in your Settings.
  • Consider a temporary downgrade only if you’re sure the older build matches your preference.

FAQ

Can I revert the original Gmail view with a single toggle inside Gmail

Sometimes. If your Gmail Settings includes a Theme option with a non-dynamic choice, you can get a near-classic look. Many users, however, don’t see that toggle, and then Android dynamic color is the real driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does turning off Material You affect other apps too

Yes. Dynamic color is system-wide. Disabling it changes the look across many apps—not just Gmail—because they draw from the system palette.

Will this work on every Android phone (Samsung, Pixel, etc.)

It should work broadly, but the menu path and exact labels differ. Look for Wallpaper colors, Dynamic color, or Use wallpaper colors in Settings.

Why do the changes not apply immediately

Android sometimes delays UI resource refresh. Clear Gmail cache and force close/reopen the app, then restart the phone if needed.

Is downgrading Gmail safe

Downgrading using an APK can reduce security and may break features. It can also stop being effective if Google enforces UI rollouts server-side. Only do it if you’re comfortable with the risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom Line

If you’re trying to revert to the original Gmail view from the new Material You look, start inside the Gmail app for any available Theme/Appearance control. When those options are missing, disable Android dynamic color (Material You) in Settings, then clear Gmail cache and reopen the app.

That combination is the most reliable path to a classic-looking Gmail experience without risky APK rollbacks.
