Windows 11 and Windows 10 can show Quick searches under the search box in the Start menu and taskbar. That “quick” list is typically a mix of recent activity, autocomplete, and sometimes search suggestions.
If you want a cleaner search experience (or you simply don’t want Windows suggesting what you might type next), you can disable the major sources of those suggestions using built-in Settings, Group Policy (Pro/Enterprise), or Registry.

What Quick Searches Means on Windows 11/10
“Quick searches” usually refers to the suggestion dropdown and recent/search history behavior you see when you click the Search box or press Win and start typing. Depending on your setup, it may include:
#1 Best Overall
- KEYBOARD: The keyboard works for Windows with hot keys that enable easy access to Media, My Computer, Mute, Volume up/down, and Calculator
- EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection
- VERSATILE COMPATIBILITY: This keyboard is designed to work with multiple Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, 10 offering broad compatibility across devices.
- SLEEK DESIGN: The elegant black color of the wired keyboard complements your tech and decor, adding a stylish and cohesive look to any setup without sacrificing function.
- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
- Recent searches (your past queries)
- Autocomplete (suggested completions based on what you typed before)
- Search suggestions (recommendations from Windows and, in some cases, Microsoft’s services)
- Search highlights (promotional or trending content that can surface in the search experience)
The exact toggles vary slightly by Windows version, but the controls you’re looking for are consistent: search suggestions, web results, and search history/privacy features.
Before You Start (What You Can and Can’t Disable)
- You can reduce or remove suggestion content from the search UI by turning off web search, suggestions, and search history personalization.
- You may still see local results (apps, installed settings, and files that match your typed query). That’s normal—even with suggestions disabled.
- Some enterprise admins lock these options via Group Policy or management tools. If that’s your case, you’ll need the policy path instead of Settings.
Also, after changing privacy/suggestion settings, you may need to restart Search or sign out and back in for the UI to update fully.
Method 1: Turn Off Search Suggestions in Settings (Windows 11)
Windows 11 exposes most suggestion controls in the Search and privacy settings. Follow these steps to disable the Quick-search style dropdown content.
- Open Settings (press Win + I).
- Go to Privacy & security > Search permissions.
- Under the Search permissions area, turn off options related to Search highlights, Search suggestions, or Show search suggestions (wording can vary by build).
- Go to Privacy & security > Activity history.
- Turn off Let Windows track app launches and any option that affects search history or activity history.
- Restart the PC (or sign out/in) to refresh the search UI.
If you don’t see the exact labels above, use Method 3 and Method 4 to cover web results and personalization controls that drive most “quick” suggestions.
Method 2: Turn Off Search Suggestions in Settings (Windows 10)
On Windows 10, the key switches are in Search permissions and (separately) within privacy settings that control search personalization.
- Open Settings (press Win + I).
- Go to Privacy.
- Select Search permissions.
- Turn off options for Search suggestions and any web/search personalization features shown on your device.
- Go back to Privacy, then open Activity history.
- Turn off options that affect search history / activity tracking.
- Restart your PC to apply the UI changes.
After these changes, when you type in Search, you should mostly get matching results (apps/settings/files) rather than an auto-filled Quick search list.

Method 3: Disable Search Highlights and Web Results (Windows 11/10)
If your Quick searches include content that looks like web recommendations, the “web search” and highlights toggles are typically the cause. Turn them off in Search-related settings.

- Go to Privacy & security (Windows 11) or Privacy (Windows 10).
- Find Search permissions.
- Turn off options for Search highlights and Web search (or similarly named toggles like “show search results from the web”).
- Close Settings and restart.
Wording differs across builds, but if you see a toggle mentioning web, highlights, or suggestions, turn it off. Those are the main drivers of “Quick search” style recommendations.
Method 4: Stop Windows from Using Your Search History (Privacy Controls)
Even with suggestions disabled, some systems may still show recent queries unless you stop activity history tracking. Use these privacy controls to prevent Windows from learning from your searches.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security (Win 11) or Privacy (Win 10).
- Open Activity history.
- Turn off:
- Let Windows track app launches
- Let Windows collect search history (or any equivalent search/activity tracking toggle)
- Clear the existing history if your build offers a Clear or Delete button for search/activity history.
- Sign out and back in, or restart, to update Search UI behavior.
This method is especially useful if you used your PC for multiple profiles and you don’t want the “recent” Quick searches list to persist.
Method 5: Use Group Policy to Disable Suggestions (Pro/Enterprise)
If you have Windows 11 Pro/Enterprise or Windows 10 Pro/Enterprise, Group Policy can force these settings system-wide and prevent them from coming back after updates.

- Do not allow web results in search (names vary)
- Set each matching policy to Disabled or Enabled depending on the policy wording (read the policy description).
- Run Command Prompt as admin and execute:
gpupdate /force
- Restart the PC.
If you don’t see the specific policies, your Windows build may not expose them, or the policy name differs. Use Method 6 (Registry) as a fallback.
Method 6: Registry Tweaks to Disable Quick Search-Style Suggestions
Registry edits can persist across settings changes, but they’re also easier to misconfigure. Back up first, and only change values you recognize.

|---|---|---|
| Disable search suggestions | ...\Windows\Search |
0 (DWORD) |
| Disable web results in search | ...\Windows\Search |
0 or 1 depending on policy naming |
| Disable search highlights | ...\Windows\Search |
0 (DWORD) |
- Restart the PC.
If Quick searches still appear after a Registry edit, confirm the value name spelling and that you didn’t create the key under the wrong hive (HKLM vs HKCU).
Method 7: If Quick Searches Still Appear (Troubleshooting)
Sometimes the UI won’t update immediately, or a separate feature is still producing suggestions. Use these steps in order.
- Restart once after changing settings (or sign out/in). Search UI updates aren’t always instant.
- Clear search history again if your build offers a clear-history button in Search/personalization settings.
- Check the other profile: if you turned off settings in one user account, other accounts may still show Quick searches.
- Run Windows Search troubleshooter (Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Search and Indexing).
- Re-check privacy toggles: ensure web results/highlights/suggestions are all off.
- If using Group Policy/Registry, run
gpupdate /force(for policies) and then restart. - Update Windows: in rare cases, suggestion behavior changes after patching; after an update, re-verify the toggles.
If Quick searches are coming from an app or launcher (not Windows Search), disable that app’s “recent” suggestions and test again.
Common Mistakes That Re-enable Suggestions
- Turning off only one toggle: disabling suggestions but leaving web results/highlights enabled can still show a Quick-search dropdown.
- Changing settings but not restarting: the Search UI may keep the old dropdown until the session refreshes.
- Editing HKCU but your policies are enforced via HKLM: enterprise devices often override user-level settings.
- Using the wrong Windows edition path: Group Policy changes won’t work on Windows Home.
- Not checking app-level search UI: some desktop widgets or browser integrations can inject suggestions.
Windows 11 vs Windows 10 Differences
Windows 11 reorganized many controls under Privacy & security and updated Search UI elements. Windows 10 puts most options under Privacy > Search permissions and also relies heavily on Activity history.
Practically, you’ll get the best results by disabling three things across both versions: search suggestions, web results/highlights, and search/activity history.
FAQs
Will disabling Quick searches stop me from searching my PC?
No. You’ll still be able to type in the Search box and get matching local results (apps, settings, and files). What changes is the suggestion/autocomplete-style dropdown behavior.

Do these settings affect only my account or all users?
Settings and privacy toggles generally apply per Windows user profile. Group Policy (Pro/Enterprise) can apply across the whole machine depending on how your policies are configured.
Can Windows 11 re-enable suggestions after an update?
It can, especially if an update resets certain personalization settings. If you need a permanent outcome, Group Policy (or the corresponding Registry policy keys) is the more stable approach.
I’m on Windows Home—what’s the best method?
Use Settings-based methods first (Methods 1–4). If Home doesn’t expose the exact toggles you need, Registry tweaks (Method 6) are the closest substitute.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Quick searches still appear—how can I tell what’s causing them?
Try turning off web results/highlights first, then disable suggestion toggles, then clear activity history. The last change you keep will often identify the source.
Bottom Line
To disable Quick searches on Windows 11/10, turn off search suggestions plus any web/highlights options, and stop Windows from using search/activity history. Settings controls cover most users; Group Policy is best for locked-down, consistent behavior.
If anything persists, clear history, restart Search via reboot/sign-out, and verify you didn’t miss a related toggle. You should be left with a clean Search experience that focuses on your typed query and local results.
