If you added custom CSS, disable that CSS; if the cause is unclear, test Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode first. Use Refresh Firefox only when you accept that it removes many preferences and customizations—even though it keeps bookmarks and several other kinds of personal data.
How do I revert Firefox UI changes without losing bookmarks or settings?
Start with what changed. A built-in toolbar adjustment, an add-on or theme, a modified preference, and profile CSS each call for a different remedy. Reversing a UI change is not the same as downgrading Firefox; Mozilla’s guidance here covers customization and profile troubleshooting, not an endorsed downgrade procedure.

If custom CSS changed Firefox, undo that first
Firefox can load profile-level style rules from userChrome.css (browser interface) and userContent.css (web content). If you created or installed one of these files, turn off the legacy profile CSS preference and remove or rename the relevant file:
- Open the Firefox profile folder. In Firefox, enter
about:supportin the address bar and use the profile-folder option shown there to open it. - In the profile, open
chrome. If that folder contains your customuserChrome.cssoruserContent.css, rename the file—for example, add.disabledto its name—or remove it if you no longer need it. - In a new tab, open
about:config, findtoolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets, and set it tofalse. - Restart Firefox and check whether the interface has returned to the expected appearance.
Mozilla cautions that it does not officially support adding custom rules with these CSS files or changing preferences through the Configuration Editor. Its instructions for the preference and files are in Firefox advanced customization and configuration options; contributor documentation also describes the CSS method at Mozilla’s CSS customization guide.

Use Troubleshoot Mode to identify an unclear cause
Troubleshoot Mode temporarily changes several things at once: it disables extensions, uses the default theme and toolbar settings, turns off hardware acceleration, and applies other diagnostic changes. It is useful for checking whether an extension, theme, toolbar configuration, or rendering issue is involved; it is not a permanent reset or a targeted undo button.
Open the Firefox menu, choose Help, then Troubleshoot Mode, and confirm the restart prompt. If the problem disappears in this mode, investigate the features it disables or changes, re-enabling or restoring them selectively after returning to normal mode. If it remains, follow Mozilla’s other troubleshooting steps, including clearing the startup cache, before considering a profile reset. What Refresh Firefox keeps—and what it removes
Refresh creates a new profile, so it is much broader than reverting one visual change. Mozilla’s current guide lists the following data as kept and removed:

Those lists are Mozilla’s stated Refresh behavior, not a guarantee that every individual setup will be unaffected by other issues. Review Refresh Firefox – reset add-ons and settings before proceeding. In particular, a profile setting that controls a visual change is among the modified preferences Refresh removes, and toolbar arrangements and user styles are not preserved.

Protect the old profile before resetting
Before any broad reset or manual profile-file changes, keep a copy of important profile data. Refresh moves the former profile into an Old Firefox Data folder on the desktop. Mozilla says some information can be copied back if needed; the folder contains sensitive data, so remove it when it is no longer needed and any required recovery is complete.
If you need something after a reset, restore only the relevant data rather than copying every file from the old profile. Profile files can also contain the preference or configuration that caused the problem. When a preference reset or new profile makes more sense
Reset modified preferences
If the unwanted behavior appears to come from a changed preference rather than a CSS file, Mozilla says modified preferences can be reset through about:config or by removing the relevant preference file or files from the profile. Its dedicated troubleshooting article describes renaming or deleting prefs.js; renaming retains the prior file as a backup. This is a broad preference reset, not a way to preserve every intentional setting. Make a profile-data backup before changing files, and see Reset Firefox preferences to troubleshoot and fix problems.
Create a new profile and transfer only what you need
If Refresh is unavailable or you want to preserve the original profile untouched while testing a clean setup, Mozilla documents creating a profile and transferring selected data. Keep the original profile in place until the new one works and you have confirmed the data you need. This approach takes more manual effort, but avoids blindly carrying over settings that may have caused the problem; use Mozilla’s troubleshooting guide and old-profile recovery guide.

If the Refresh option is missing
Availability can depend on Firefox’s profile management system and version. Mozilla’s Refresh guide says the option may be unavailable with the new profile management system unless Firefox is updated to version 150 or later; that page gives April 21, 2026 as Firefox 150’s release date. If Refresh is not offered, check for an update and consider creating a new profile with selective data transfer rather than deleting the existing profile.
