1. Find what is using storage
On iPhone
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Review the recommendations and the space listed for each app before choosing what to remove. The storage categories can include app content, items in Files, and Safari downloads, so inspect the category rather than assuming an app install is the only thing taking space. On Android
Open Settings > Storage, then select a category to see its contents. Android settings differ among manufacturers and software releases; consult the phone maker’s instructions if the labels or paths do not match. Google’s Android storage guidance also covers ways to review and free space.

iPhone: offload, don’t delete
In iPhone Storage, choose an app and use Offload App, or enable Offload Unused Apps if that recommendation is offered. Offloading removes the app itself while keeping its documents and data; deleting the app removes related data too. The icon can be tapped to reinstall an offloaded app, provided it remains available. Apple explains the distinction in its iPhone storage instructions.

Android: archive apps where available
Some Android devices support automatic or manual app archiving. Archiving removes an infrequently used app install while retaining personal app data and leaving its icon; you can download the app again if it is still available in Google Play. Support and availability vary, so check the device’s Storage settings and Google’s storage guidance.
Before offloading, archiving, or removing a specialized app, check whether important content lives only inside it and whether you can still sign in. These system features do not guarantee that every app’s data will be recoverable in every situation.

3. Remove downloads you can replace
Check the app that created each offline file: streaming apps may store films, music, or podcasts; map apps may store offline areas; and Files or a browser may hold documents and downloads. Remove only content you no longer need offline or can download again. A subscription, internet connection, or continued availability of the content may be required to fetch it later. Apple points users to downloaded TV content and Files items in its storage instructions; Google also describes removing downloaded media and files in its Android guidance.
4. Protect photos and videos before removing them
Google Photos
Before using Google Photos’ Free up space option, confirm that backup has completed for the specific photos and videos you want to keep, and that the app is signed in to the account you expect. Google’s instructions for Android and iPhone and iPad explain this feature. A removed device copy may remain visible in Google Photos or at photos.google.com, but it may no longer appear in the phone’s built-in gallery or be available for offline viewing. Access then depends on being online and signed in to Google Photos.

iPhone: iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage
On iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos. If Sync this iPhone and Optimize iPhone Storage are enabled, Apple says full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud while space-saving copies are kept on the phone as needed. Check that syncing is complete and that your iCloud account has enough storage before relying on this arrangement. See Apple’s photo and video storage guidance.
Keep a separate local copy
If you would rather not rely on cloud access, transfer selected photos, videos, or documents to a computer or compatible external destination. Google describes copying Android files and folders to a computer over USB, and Apple recommends transferring selected photos and videos to a computer when more iPhone space is needed. Open the copied files on the destination before deleting anything from the phone. Instructions are available from Google and Apple.

A phone-to-computer cable or USB flash drive with a compatible adapter may help with a local-copy workflow, but compatibility is not universal. Check the phone model, connector, destination capacity, and whether you can open the files from the destination before removing originals.
5. Treat cache and app storage differently on Android
Android distinguishes temporary cache from an app’s stored data. Clearing cache removes temporary files and may make the app slower the next time it opens. Clearing app storage permanently deletes all app data, which can include unsynced content or settings. Prefer cleanup controls inside the app itself, and inspect what it stores before selecting Clear storage. Google explains the distinction in its Android storage guidance.

Use reversibility, the chance of losing unsynced data, offline access, cloud-account dependence, and compatibility with your specific phone to decide what to do first. No cleanup option is safe for every app or device.
