An old internal SSD can become useful external storage with a compatible USB enclosure, adapter, or dock. The key is matching the drive’s interface and physical size—not just buying an enclosure that says “M.2.” This guide covers how to identify the drive, choose a suitable enclosure, and protect your files before you put the SSD back to work.
Start by identifying the SSD
Before shopping, check the drive’s label, documentation, or the old computer’s specifications. You need to know both its interface and its physical form factor. Kingston’s guide to reusing an SSD explains the basic enclosure approach; the ASUS and Satechi product pages show why checking exact compatibility matters.

- 2.5-inch SATA: A larger, rectangular drive that needs a 2.5-inch SATA enclosure or adapter.
- M.2 SATA: A slim stick-shaped drive that uses the SATA protocol. M.2 describes its form factor, not necessarily its protocol.
- M.2 NVMe: A slim stick-shaped drive that uses NVMe. It requires an enclosure that explicitly supports NVMe.
For an M.2 drive, record its length as well as its protocol. Common lengths include 2242, 2260, and 2280. Do not choose an enclosure based on “M.2” alone: the Satechi NVMe enclosure, for example, excludes M.2 SATA, while the ASUS Cobble SSD enclosure specifies support for M.2 SATA and NVMe drives in particular sizes.

Choose an enclosure that fits the drive and computer
Use the enclosure or adapter’s specifications to confirm that it supports your SSD’s protocol and size. Then check how it connects to your computer. Kingston lists enclosures with USB-C, USB 3.0, and Thunderbolt connections; Satechi’s setup guide describes a USB-C connection. Make sure the enclosure’s port and supplied cable will work with the computer you plan to use.

- Flip-Open Tool-Free Design: Open the cover, insert your NVMe SSD, lock it in place, and close—no screws or tools required. Fast and simple for upgrades, cloning, troubleshooting, and portable tech work.
- Cooler 10Gbps Performance: The aluminum enclosure presses the thermal pad directly against your SSD for better heat transfer and more stable 10Gbps speeds than slide-in enclosures. Ideal for long transfers and heavy workloads.
- NVMe Only for Maximum Speed: Supports M.2 NVMe SSDs in sizes 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280 up to at least 8TB. Not compatible with M.2 SATA SSDs.
- USB C Plug-and-Play: Connect with USB C for up to 10Gbps using USB 3.2 Gen 2. No drivers or external power needed. Works with laptops, desktops, gaming handhelds, and USB C devices.
- Portable and Durable Aluminum Build: Reinforced ABS frame with an aluminum alloy top keeps your SSD protected and cool. Slim, lightweight, and perfect for creators, gamers, and anyone needing fast portable storage.
| What to check | What to match |
|---|---|
| Drive protocol | 2.5-inch SATA, M.2 SATA, or M.2 NVMe; the enclosure must explicitly support the same type. |
| Physical fit | 2.5-inch or M.2; for M.2, check supported lengths such as 2242, 2260, or 2280. |
| Computer connection | The enclosure port and cable must connect to your intended computer. |
| Installation | Check whether the enclosure uses screws, includes a thermal pad, or comes with a protective case. A small screwdriver is needed only for models that require screws. |
Construction and advertised link rates do not establish the transfer speed you will see. Actual performance depends on the SSD and the host computer as well as the enclosure.
Back up and check the SSD before relying on it
If the SSD is still installed in the old computer, back up important files before removing it. Kingston advises backing up or cloning the drive before removal, especially if it contains an operating system or installed games. If you did not make a backup beforehand, connect the SSD in its enclosure and copy any files you need before making changes to it.

- 10Gbps NVMe Enclosure: With the latest USB 3.2 Gen2, this M.2 enclosure can achieve a data transfer rate of 10Gbps. Backward compatible with USB 3.1 and USB 3.0. Note: 10G speeds need to be matched with a USB C 3.2 GEN2 data cable
- Tool-free SSD Enclosure: Tool-free NVMe SSD enclosure for quick and easy installation. Plug and play, no drivers required. The buckle design of the M.2 SSD enclosure can ensure stable and fast transfer
- Broad Compatibility: The UGREEN M.2 NVMe SSD enclosure is specially designed to support NMVe protocol M/B&M keys and for 2230/ 2242/ 2260/2280 size SSDs up to 8TB. The M.2 NVMe enclosure is applicable for Windows, Mac OS (Mac Mini M4/M5 Pro/M6), Linux, Android, IOS systems.(Does not support SATA NGFF SSD or mSATA SSD)
- Security & Stability: USB C NVMe enclosure adopts advanced RTL9210 chip with short-circuit, over-current and multi-protection to ensure the safety of your SSD and valuable data, and supports UASP/ Trim with high transfer speed
- Compact & Portable: This ultra-slim aluminium external NVMe enclosure with extra silicone case is portable yet durable, and much easier to carry with this M.2 to USB adapter, making it ideal for travelling
Check the drive’s condition before trusting it with important files. Kingston recommends SSD Manager or another manufacturer utility; SMART attributes can provide information about drive health. A health check is useful, but it cannot guarantee that an SSD will not fail later. Keep another copy of irreplaceable files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInstall, connect, and format only if needed
- Fit the SSD: Open the enclosure and install the drive according to its instructions. Some models use screws; others use a tool-free mechanism. Follow the enclosure’s own guidance for any included thermal pad.
- Connect it: Attach the enclosure to the computer with a compatible port and cable. If the drive contains files you need, copy them to a safe location before formatting.
- Decide whether to format: Formatting is not necessary just to preserve and access the existing contents. If you want a fresh drive or need a different file system, format it only after protecting the files you want to keep.
Secure erasure is different from ordinary formatting. Kingston’s secure-erase instructions describe a procedure for a Kingston NVMe drive using Linux tooling; do not treat that procedure as universal instructions for every SSD.
Quick Recap

- 【Supported SSD】FIDECO NVMe enclosure can support M.2 NVMe SSD with M & M+B Key. The supported M.2 SSD sizes are 2230/2242/2260/2280. Just one M.2 enclosure can meet your needs of using different sizes of NVMe SSDs. Please not that it cannot support any M.2 SATA SSD.
- 【Super Fast Transfer Speed】FIDECO NVMe SSD enclosure adopts USB 3.2 Gen 2 standard and can support UASP, so the maximum speed can reach 10Gbps in theory. You do not need to wait for the data transfer any longer, and it can definitely save much time for you.
- 【Sandwich Design】FIDECO M.2 enclosure features sandwich-style design, which makes it easy for you to install different SSDs with no tools at all. Also, the sandwich design can make the thermal pad have a better contact with the M.2 NVMe enclosure, so the SSD itself can run in a much cooler operating environment.
- 【Portable Size】FIDECO M.2 NVMe to USB adapter features mini and pocket design, and it is equipped with a USB C to USB C cable with an attached USB A adapter. So, you can bring only one USB cable during travel.
- 【Compatible System】FIDECO M.2 to USB adapter is widely compatible with Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. Therefore, whether you are Windows or Apple users, the NVMe SSD reader can make it.
