You can reuse a compatible Fire TV Stick as a screen and Alexa control point for smart-home devices—but it does not become a standalone Zigbee hub. Whether its Smart Home Dashboard is available depends on the Stick’s model and software, so check compatibility before planning around the feature.
What an old Fire TV Stick can—and cannot—do
Fire TV can provide Alexa voice control and, on supported models, a screen-based way to view and control compatible smart-home devices. That makes a Stick useful as a control surface attached to a TV. Amazon’s documentation does not identify Fire TV Sticks as devices with built-in Zigbee hubs.

The distinction matters if you own Zigbee lights, sensors, or other devices. Amazon documents built-in Zigbee hubs in compatible Echo and eero products. If your Alexa device does not have a built-in hub, Amazon says a separate Zigbee hub can connect Zigbee devices to Alexa. The Fire Stick’s ability to display controls does not replace that hub.

Start by identifying the exact Fire TV Stick generation in the device settings or device information. “Old Fire Stick” is not specific enough to establish compatibility. Amazon’s 2022 announcement of the Smart Home Dashboard rollout excluded Fire TV Stick 1st and 2nd generation, among other Fire TV products. That announcement is useful historical guidance, not a complete current compatibility list; availability can depend on the model and its software.

Amazon describes a Smart Home menu for supported Fire TV devices. If you do not see the dashboard or menu, do not assume every Stick has it: check the device’s current software and model-specific Amazon support information. You can still use Alexa voice controls where your Alexa and smart-home devices support them.
Set up Fire TV and Alexa for control
- Confirm the Fire TV model and software. Find the generation in Fire TV settings or device information, then verify that the Smart Home Dashboard or relevant controls are supported for that model.
- Use the same Amazon account. Amazon says the Fire TV and Alexa-enabled device must be registered to the same account to link properly. Follow Amazon’s Alexa app flow to link compatible Alexa and Fire TV devices.
- Add the smart-home device to Alexa. Use the Alexa app or the device maker’s supported setup process, then confirm that the device appears in Alexa and is associated with the account you intend to use.
- Open the Fire TV smart-home controls or try Alexa voice control. On a supported Fire TV, look for the Smart Home interface or menu. The exact menu and availability depend on model and software.
Match the setup to the device’s connection type
Wi-Fi devices
Compatible Wi-Fi plugs, lights, switches, thermostats, and cameras can be added to Alexa through their supported setup flow. Check each device’s network requirements: Amazon says most smart-home Wi-Fi devices only work on 2.4 GHz bands. A Wi-Fi device’s Alexa control does not by itself mean it needs a Zigbee hub.

Zigbee devices
Pair a Zigbee device with a compatible Echo that has a built-in smart-home hub, or connect it through a separate Zigbee hub that works with Alexa. The Fire TV Stick can act as the screen for controls after devices are available through Alexa, but it is not the documented Zigbee pairing hub.
Choose the right role for the Stick
A TV-based control screen is useful when the television is already on and you want to see or select device controls. It is not the same thing as a dedicated, always-available smart-home panel: the Stick is an interface connected to a TV, and the evidence does not establish it as a standalone automation controller. If your goal is simply voice control, a supported Alexa setup may be enough; if your devices use Zigbee, plan for a compatible hub as well.
