Launch one Puppeteer Browser, then reuse it for multiple screenshot jobs. For independent captures, create a fresh Page for each job, set its viewport, navigate, await page.screenshot(), and close the page. Close the browser when the batch or its owning service is finished. Use a separate browser context only when jobs should not share cookies or cache.
Reuse one browser, with a page for each capture
A Puppeteer browser can own multiple pages, so you do not need to launch a new browser for every URL. The official screenshots guide shows the basic launch, navigate, capture, and close flow; the Page API documents page behavior and viewport settings. The example below adapts those documented patterns into a sequential batch lifecycle. It is illustrative, not a performance benchmark.

Replace the sample jobs with your URLs and output paths. networkidle2 is only one possible navigation condition; some sites keep connections open or continue updating after navigation, so choose a wait condition appropriate to the page rather than assuming it guarantees a visually complete render.

A page-per-job pattern gives each capture a clear cleanup boundary while keeping the expensive browser lifetime across the batch. The finally blocks ensure that a failed navigation or screenshot still closes the page, and that the browser is closed if the batch exits with an error. Browser.close() closes the browser and its associated pages; see the Browser API.

Set viewport before navigation when dimensions matter
Set each page’s viewport before calling goto() when the site renders layout or responsive content based on viewport dimensions. Different pages in the same browser can use different viewport sizes, as documented in the Page API.
Choose between a page and an isolated browser context
Use browser.newPage() when jobs may share the default browser context and its session state. Use a separate BrowserContext when one job must not reuse another job’s cookies or cache. Context separation is a storage/session boundary; the documentation does not describe it as full operating-system or process isolation.

The context behavior is documented by Puppeteer’s BrowserContext API and browser.createBrowserContext() reference. The default context cannot be closed.
Isolate a job when it needs its own cookies and cache

Manage screenshot results and page lifetimes
Await the screenshot before cleanup
Await page.screenshot() before closing the page so the capture completes before its owning job is cleaned up. Puppeteer documents screenshot return forms including saving to a path, bytes, and base64 data in the Page.screenshot() API. It also says that Browser.newPage(), BrowserContext.newPage(), and Page.close() wait for an active screenshot in that context to finish. That coordination does not mean all page operations are serialized.
Inspect open pages when diagnosing ownership
Use browser.pages() to inspect pages in a browser, or context.pages() to inspect pages belonging to one context. These APIs can help diagnose leaked pages in a long-running process; for ordinary batches, a fresh page per job makes ownership easier to follow. See Puppeteer’s BrowserContext.pages() reference.

Run captures in parallel only after measuring your workload
The example is sequential, which makes ownership and error cleanup straightforward. A single browser can have multiple pages, but the cited Puppeteer documentation does not publish a universal concurrency limit or a comparative speedup for reusing a browser. Parallel captures can change memory use, network pressure, and site behavior; measure with your actual pages and runtime before choosing a concurrency level.

Troubleshoot common lifecycle problems
- Pages accumulate over time: ensure every job closes its page in a
finallyblock. If a job owns a context, close that context instead; it closes all pages inside it. - One screenshot sees another job’s session: the jobs are using shared context state. Create a separate browser context for the job that needs cookie and cache separation.
- The image has the wrong responsive layout: set the page viewport before navigation, and confirm the job’s width and height are the values you intended.
- The capture is incomplete or times out waiting for navigation: do not assume
networkidle2fits every site. Select a navigation or page-specific wait condition that matches the site’s behavior; a page that continues polling may not become idle. - The browser closes before the batch finishes: keep
browser.close()outside the per-job loop. Close it after all jobs complete, or when the long-lived service is shutting down. - A page fails but later jobs should still run: the sample’s outer
finallycorrectly guarantees cleanup but an uncaught job error will stop the loop. If the batch should continue after an individual failure, catch and record errors inside the loop, while retaining the per-pagefinallycleanup.
