To return screenshot data through an MCP tool, choose the result type that matches how the client should use it: an image content block for immediate visual inspection, an embedded resource for attachment-like content with a URI, or a resource link when the client should fetch the image separately. The MCP server can provide these protocol objects, but the MCP host decides how to display them; it cannot guarantee that every client shows a downloadable file attachment.
Choose the MCP result type for the job
MCP tool results can contain multiple content items, including text, images, resource links, and embedded resources. These formats differ in whether the screenshot bytes travel in the immediate result and whether the content has a resource URI. The MCP tools specification defines these result types.

Image content: show the screenshot to the model
An image content block carries the screenshot in the tool result. Its data field contains base64-encoded bytes, and mimeType must identify the actual image encoding, such as image/png. This is image content—not a local filesystem path or a text block containing base64.
Embedded resource: associate the bytes with a URI
Use an embedded resource when the result should have resource or attachment semantics. It includes a URI and MIME type, as well as content; binary resource content can be represented as a base64 blob. Pick a URI that is meaningful and usable in your application. A server-local path is not automatically accessible to a remote client.

Resource link: let the client retrieve the image
A resource link identifies where the content can be retrieved later. It does not include the screenshot bytes in the immediate tool result, so the client must support the link and be able to resolve its URI.
Return inline image content with the Python SDK
The Python SDK’s Image helper produces an image content block. Pass either a file path or raw bytes, but not both. A path lets the helper infer the MIME type from a documented image suffix; when passing bytes, specify the image format so the MIME type matches the data. The official MCP Python SDK media guide documents this helper and the resource alternatives.

For an embedded binary resource, include a stable or request-specific URI, the true MIME type, and the base64-encoded screenshot bytes in the binary blob field. This gives the content a resource identity while keeping the data in the tool result.

For separate retrieval, expose the screenshot through an MCP resource and return a resource link to its URI. The client then needs to retrieve that resource. Design the URI and retrieval flow for the client that will consume it; do not assume that a path on the server is reachable from the host machine.
What “file attachment” means depends on the client
The protocol describes the data the server returns, not a required user-interface treatment. A host may show image content inline, present an embedded resource as an attachment, or provide its own retrieval and display flow for a resource link. If users specifically need a downloadable file, verify the behavior in the target MCP host and client instead of treating protocol conformance as a guarantee of a download button.

Does a resource link include the screenshot bytes?
No. It carries a URI for the client to retrieve; the bytes are not in the immediate tool result.
Can an MCP server guarantee that a screenshot appears as a downloadable attachment?
No. The server returns protocol content, while the host and client determine how to present or retrieve it.
