To recover a YouTube stream, distinguish a temporary RTMP output failure from an FFmpeg process that has exited. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt recovery while the process is still running; a separate process supervisor is needed to relaunch FFmpeg after it exits. These are different failure modes, and neither setting guarantees uninterrupted playback for viewers.
Choose the recovery method for the failure
| Approach | What it handles | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg FIFO muxer output recovery | Temporary output or network failure while FFmpeg continues processing. | Does not relaunch an exited process or guarantee recovery from every failure or uninterrupted viewer playback. FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation. |
| External process supervisor | Relaunches FFmpeg when the process exits, according to the supervisor’s restart policy. | May not detect a process that remains alive but has stalled unless you add a health check or watchdog. Stream continuity is not assured. FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation; YouTube encoder setup. |
For stronger coverage, use both layers: configure FIFO recovery for temporary output failures and a supervisor for process exits. A health check for a live-but-stalled process and the behavior of the YouTube broadcast after a restart depend on your deployment and should be verified there.

Configure FFmpeg to attempt RTMP output recovery
FFmpeg’s official FIFO muxer documentation illustrates streaming to an RTMP server while continuing real-time processing through a temporary network failure and attempting recovery every second indefinitely. The example uses FIFO as the output muxer and FLV as its underlying format:

-map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name
- Replace
INPUT. Use your actual input file or source.-rereads at real-time rate, as in FFmpeg’s documented example. - Match the encoding and stream maps to your input. The example encodes video with
libx264, audio withaac, and maps the first video and audio streams. These are example choices, not universal requirements; adjust them to the codecs and streams you intend to publish. - Keep the FIFO recovery options before the destination.
-f fifo -fifo_format flvselects the FIFO pseudo-muxer and FLV output format.-attempt_recovery 1enables recovery attempts, and-recovery_wait_time 1sets the wait between attempts to one second in this example.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1is also part of FFmpeg’s documented command. - Replace the destination with YouTube’s current ingest URL. Obtain the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room and configure them in the correct fields for your encoder. Keep the key private; do not publish a usable key in a script, issue, or example. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Check the installed FFmpeg build and matching documentation. The command is a documented example, not a universal production command. Confirm that your version supports the options and check its logs to see how it behaves with your input and destination.
This setting attempts to recover from temporary output failures; it does not relaunch FFmpeg if the process exits. The documentation does not promise preservation of every frame, seamless playback, or recovery from every failure.

Restart FFmpeg if the process exits
Use an external process supervisor with a restart policy for an FFmpeg process that terminates. The exact configuration depends on the operating system and supervisor; the cited FFmpeg and YouTube documentation does not prescribe a particular service definition or restart command. Confirm that your supervisor actually relaunches the intended command after an exit, and review its logs alongside FFmpeg’s logs.
A supervisor that only watches whether the process exists may not catch a process that is still running but no longer making progress. Detecting that state requires a separate health check or watchdog, configured for your environment. Do not assume an ordinary restart policy covers it.

Set and verify YouTube’s ingest details
- Get the current server URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room. Enter them in the encoder’s corresponding fields. Treat the key as a credential and do not expose it in public commands or logs.
- If using RTMPS, verify the endpoint and protocol. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Its guidance for relevant SSL errors is to check that the protocol and server use RTMPS and to try port 443; for connection timeouts, check the server URL and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS. See YouTube RTMPS guidance.
- Check available ingest addresses. YouTube’s Live API exposes primary and backup ingest addresses, including RTMPS addresses. The backup address is an option for sending the content simultaneously; it is not a process-restart mechanism. See YouTube Live API stream documentation.
Troubleshoot a disconnected stream
FFmpeg exited
Read the FFmpeg log and confirm the process state. If FFmpeg terminated, FIFO recovery cannot restart it; check the exit reason and configure an external supervisor to relaunch failed processes. Confirm that the supervisor is monitoring the right command and inspect its logs after a restart.

FFmpeg is running but reports an output failure
Check whether the RTMP output uses the FIFO recovery options shown above, and consult documentation matching your installed FFmpeg build. Those options address temporary output failures; they do not establish that a live-but-stalled process will be detected.

Connection times out or RTMPS reports an SSL error
Recheck the current YouTube server URL and stream key in Live Control Room. For RTMPS, verify the protocol and endpoint; YouTube advises trying port 443 for relevant SSL errors and checking RTMPS support in the encoder when connection attempts time out. These checks diagnose connection setup; they do not restart FFmpeg.
A reconnect option appears to have no effect
Do not treat FFmpeg’s HTTP -reconnect options as a general fix for publishing an RTMP output to YouTube. FFmpeg documents those options for its HTTP protocol implementation; FIFO is the documented pattern for RTMP output recovery. See FFmpeg HTTP protocol documentation and FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation.

The process restarted, but the live event’s status is unclear
Check the stream state in YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming the broadcast continued seamlessly or that viewers remained on the same live event. YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and explains that stopping encoder output ends a stream; it does not establish what a restart does to broadcast continuity. See YouTube encoder setup.

If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining a local FFmpeg process and supervisor. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not live camera input.
