To return or replace an Amazon sale purchase in the US, open Your Orders, find the purchase and choose Return or replace items if it appears. Select the item and reason, then follow the options and deadline Amazon shows for that order. A sale price does not guarantee an exchange or replacement.
Start with the options for your specific order
- Open Your Orders and locate the sale purchase.
- Select Return or replace items, if available.
- Choose the item and the reason for the return or replacement.
- Review the offered resolution, return method and displayed Return By Date, then follow the on-screen instructions.
Amazon’s US guidance says most eligible items can be returned for a refund or replacement or exchange within 30 days of delivery if they are in original or unused condition. Eligibility varies by item and order; check the product detail page and the choices shown in Order History. Amazon’s returns guidance does not mean every sale purchase qualifies for every resolution.

Can you exchange an item bought on sale?
Amazon says items purchased with a promotion do not qualify for an exchange. That restriction is about exchanges, not a blanket ban on returning the purchase. Check the order’s return options; if an exchange is not offered, Amazon advises returning the original and placing a new order. Amazon’s exchange guidance describes exchanges as available only for qualifying orders.
What happens when an exchange is available
Amazon says an eligible exchange order uses the original order’s shipping speed. You must return the original by the displayed Return By Date to avoid being charged for keeping both items; the exchange may ship only after Amazon receives the original. If the replacement costs less, Amazon says it refunds the difference; if it costs more, it charges the difference. Amazon also states that only credit- or debit-card orders qualify for exchanges. These rules apply to the exchange option, not necessarily to ordinary returns or replacements.

Request a replacement for a damaged or defective item
In Your Orders, choose Return or replace items, select the item and report the relevant problem. Follow the choices Amazon presents and check whether the replacement is in stock. Amazon says it creates the replacement order with the original shipping speed, but delivery timing depends on stock. The original may need to be returned before the replacement ships, and it must be returned by the order’s Return By Date to avoid a charge for keeping both. If no replacement option appears, Amazon’s guidance is to return the item and place a new order. See Amazon’s replacement instructions.
If Amazon requests photos
Provide the requested photos and make sure the damage is clearly visible. For a defective hazardous item, follow the instructions in Amazon’s Online Returns Center; do not improvise packaging or shipping arrangements.

Compare the choices before submitting
Use the options on the order itself rather than assuming a replacement, exchange or refund is available. Check these details before you confirm:

Track the refund and understand possible delays
Check Your Returns for refund status. Amazon says refunds can take up to 30 days after it receives and processes the return; the estimate depends on order type, return-shipping speed, processing time and payment method. It is an upper estimate, not a promise that every refund takes that long. The amount and method may also vary with the item’s condition, how long you had it and how it was purchased. Amazon’s refund guidance explains the possible outcomes.

Depending on the return, Amazon may issue an advanced refund after the carrier’s first scan. If the original payment method cannot be used, a declined refund may be routed to Amazon account balance. A return that is used, damaged or missing parts may receive only a partial refund. A gift refund goes to the person who returned the gift.
After an advanced refund or replacement, Amazon warns that it may charge you if the original is not returned by the confirmation deadline, is not in original condition, uses the wrong label or is dropped at an unapproved location. Follow the instructions tied to the order.
