To return an Amazon.com purchase, open Your Orders, choose the item, select Return or replace items (if available), and follow the return method and deadline shown for that order. Refund eligibility, fees, and timing vary by item, seller, reason, and condition, so the order’s own return page is the authority.
Start the return from Your Orders
- Sign in to Amazon.com and open Your Orders.
- Find the purchase and choose the return option displayed beside it. Select a reason, then choose a refund or replacement if Amazon offers that choice.
- Review the return methods and select one. Check whether it is free, whether it requires a box or printed label, and what steps the confirmation gives you. Available methods can differ by item, seller, and reason. Amazon says most items have at least one free return option, but a selected non-free method, a heavy or bulky item, or an unusually high return rate may result in a fee. Amazon Return Policy
- Use the return-by date and instructions in your confirmation email or Order History. Amazon assigns labels to specific returns; do not combine items from separate orders or shipments in one return box.
Amazon’s return instructions explain the options for eligible orders. If no return option appears, check the order details and the applicable policy; not every item or purchase is returnable through the same process.

Choose the return method shown for your item
Compare the actual choices presented in the return flow rather than assuming one method is always available or best.
- Cost: Check whether Amazon lists a fee for the method you select.
- Packaging and label: Some eligible drop-off options are label-free and box-free. For one of these, select the location during the return process and bring the item and the QR code. Other methods may require packaging and an assigned label.
- Deadline and transit steps: Follow the order-specific return-by date and the instructions for handing off or shipping the item.
- Outcome: Choose a refund or replacement only if that option is offered for the order.
Check the deadline and prepare the item
Amazon.com says most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery, but exceptions apply. Its policy lists examples of shorter or longer periods for particular items and situations, including certain digital content, specified Apple and Boost Infinite products, Amazon Haul items, some categories, and registry purchases. - Before sending back a laptop, camera, or other electronic device, erase your personal information using the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Use the assigned return label when the selected method requires one, and follow the confirmation for packaging and drop-off or shipping.
Track the refund and understand the timing
After handing over the item, check Your Returns for the latest return and refund status. Amazon says issued refund details also appear in Your Transactions, and it sends a refund summary email.
Amazon’s published guidance says the return and refund process can take up to 30 days, depending on the order, return shipping speed, processing time, and payment method. That overall period is different from the time a payment provider may need to post a refund after Amazon issues it. Amazon’s post-issuance estimates are:

These estimates come from Amazon’s undated current refund guidance; a financial institution may take additional time after Amazon issues the refund. Promotional certificates are not refunded.
Why the refund amount may be different
Amazon says an inspection may lead to a reduced refund if an item shows use or damage, or if required parts, accessories, or manuals are missing. Its policy also allows conditional late, damage, or restocking fees in specified circumstances. The policy states that a damage fee of up to 50% of the item price may apply in certain cases and describes different treatment for Luxury items; neither outcome is automatic. If a third-party seller handles the order
For an item sold by a third-party seller, the seller reviews the return request before issuing a refund or replacement. Follow the return instructions and keep an eye on the request status. If the seller does not respond within two business days, Amazon’s instructions say you can request an A-to-z Guarantee refund. A claim is subject to the guarantee’s eligibility rules; approval is not assured. The A-to-z Guarantee covers certain eligible issues involving items sold and fulfilled by third-party sellers, including some cases where an expected refund after a policy-compliant return was not received.
