Claude Team vs. ChatGPT Business for a Startup: Pricing, Features, and Security

Claude Team and ChatGPT Business publish matching US-dollar seat prices. Compare workflow tools, usage limits, and security controls to find the better fit for your startup.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Claude Team and ChatGPT Business have matching published US-dollar seat prices: standard seats cost $20 per user per month with annual billing or $25 month to month, while premium seats cost $100 annually or $125 monthly. Both require at least two seats. For a startup, the choice is less about list price than about which tools fit its work, how much usage it needs, and whether the plan includes the security controls it requires.

Prices, features, and usage rules can change, and local pricing may differ. Check the vendors’ official pages before buying. This comparison uses published plan information, not independent performance testing.

How do the prices compare for a startup?

The published US-dollar per-seat prices are aligned across the two plans. Each offers standard and premium seats, with annual billing priced below month-to-month billing. Both plans require at least two seats, so a solo founder cannot buy either plan as a one-seat workspace.

Seat type Claude Team ChatGPT Business
Standard, annual billing $20 per seat per month $20 per user per month
Standard, monthly billing $25 per seat per month $25 per user per month
Premium, annual billing $100 per seat per month $100 per user per month
Premium, monthly billing $125 per seat per month $125 per user per month
Minimum team size 2 members; Anthropic lists teams of 2 to 150 2 paid seats

These are published USD prices; the vendors say pricing may vary by country or currency. Actual cost depends on seat mix, billing commitment, taxes or local pricing, and usage beyond what the plan includes. Anthropic says Standard and Premium seats can be mixed, with limits applied per member. OpenAI says Premium provides more usage than Standard. ChatGPT API platform usage is billed separately from ChatGPT Business.

For a small team, compare the total commitment rather than just the monthly equivalent: annual billing lowers the listed per-seat rate but commits the startup to a longer billing period. If the team expects intensive use, include possible usage credits or other extra charges in the budget instead of assuming the seat fee is the full cost.

Which plan’s tools fit your startup’s workflow?

The vendors describe different bundled tools. Their feature lists help identify workflow fit, but they are not evidence that one service produces better results: the cited plan sources do not provide an independent comparative performance study.

Workflow need Claude Team ChatGPT Business
Coding Claude Code Codex
Team or task agents Claude Cowork Workspace agents
Search and organizational knowledge Organization search Connectors and company knowledge
Documents and creative work Claude Design, Slides, and Docs ChatGPT workspace features; the cited plan page does not establish a directly equivalent named bundle for this row
Administration and collaboration Central billing and administration, SSO Centralized administration, SAML SSO, spend controls

Start with the tasks the team will actually run: coding, working with internal documents, searching company information, connecting external services, or coordinating repeatable tasks through agents. Then check whether the named features support the specific apps and workflows the startup uses. Feature names alone do not establish compatibility with a particular integration or prove that one tool is better for a given task.

How should you estimate usage costs?

Seat price is not a promise of unlimited use. Both providers describe included usage limits, and additional usage can involve credits or other charges. Anthropic says usage limits are per member and that credits can allow continued work after included limits; OpenAI says Premium seats have more usage than Standard seats. The available plan information does not establish a directly comparable allowance across the two services.

  • Estimate the team’s likely workload by role, such as coding, document analysis, or frequent agent use.
  • Check the current plan rules for how included limits are allocated and what happens when a member reaches them.
  • Confirm whether extra usage requires credits, incurs charges, or is handled another way before setting a budget.
  • Revisit the estimate if usage grows or the startup changes its seat mix.

What security and administration controls should you check?

Both vendors state that business workspace content is not used to train models by default. OpenAI says, “OpenAI does not train on your workspace data.” Anthropic’s pricing page says, “No model training on your content by default.” These are vendor statements about their plans; they do not establish that all privacy practices, security controls, or contractual terms are identical.

Both plan descriptions include SSO and centralized administration, but the higher-tier controls differ in availability. OpenAI’s Business comparison marks SCIM and data residency as unavailable at the Business level. Anthropic places SCIM and custom data retention among Enterprise controls. If the startup needs either control, verify the current contract and plan documentation rather than assuming it comes with a Team or Business subscription.

  • List required controls, including identity management, user provisioning, retention, data location, and admin permissions.
  • Compare those requirements against the exact plan and any contractual terms offered to your organization.
  • Ask the vendor to clarify any requirement that is not explicitly covered by the plan information.

Which should a startup choose?

Choose based on workflow and requirements, not an assumed price edge: the published US-dollar seat prices currently match. Claude Team may fit a startup whose needs align with Claude Code, Cowork, organization search, and its document and design features. ChatGPT Business may fit a startup seeking ChatGPT and Codex together with workspace agents, connectors, company knowledge, and spend controls. Those are descriptions of the vendors’ offerings, not recommendations based on hands-on testing.

Before committing, validate the particular integrations and workflows the team needs, estimate the cost of usage beyond included limits, and confirm that the plan meets the startup’s security and administration requirements. Recheck both official plan pages at purchase time because prices, features, and limits are subject to change.
