How to Retry HTTP 429 Responses Without Overloading a Speech-to-Text API

A safe 429 strategy combines provider-specific error handling, bounded retries with randomized backoff, and lower concurrency when throttling persists.

When a speech-to-text API returns HTTP 429, stop treating it as a cue to resend immediately. Classify the error, follow that provider’s retry guidance, wait with bounded backoff and randomized jitter, cap attempts and elapsed time, and reduce incoming concurrency if throttling continues. A 429 can indicate a rate limit, a shared quota, or a concurrency limit; waiting alone may not fix the underlying cause.

What a 429 means for speech recognition

HTTP 429 means the service is refusing a request because a limit has been exceeded, but the relevant limit and remedy vary by provider, API method, and request mode. Read the provider’s error code and response body rather than assuming that every 429 represents the same kind of rate limit.

For example, Amazon Transcribe documents 429 LimitExceededException cases involving a concurrent-stream quota or a rapid increase in concurrent streams. Google Cloud Speech-to-Text describes quota exhaustion in terms of per-minute or daily quotas. A retry might help with a temporary rate window; it will not necessarily solve an exhausted quota or an excessive number of simultaneous streams.

Before enabling automatic replay, check whether the specific operation is safe to repeat. Retrying a synchronous recognition request is not the same as restarting a live streaming session: operation state, duplicate processing, and audio replay behavior can differ.

Build a retry policy from four decisions

1. Decide which failures are retryable

Retry only errors the provider identifies as transient or retryable. Azure fast transcription, for example, lists HTTP 429 among retryable rate-limit errors. Do not retry malformed requests, authorization failures, or other terminal client errors as though a delay would correct them. Inspect the provider’s status code and error details, and keep retry classification specific to the API endpoint.

2. Choose a bounded delay with jitter

Use exponential backoff when the provider’s policy calls for it: each successive wait grows, subject to a cap. Add randomized jitter so a fleet of workers does not all retry at the same instant after a shared pause. If the API documents a server retry hint such as Retry-After, follow that endpoint’s contract; do not assume that every speech API sends such a header.

For an AWS SDK throttling retry, AWS documents full jitter with a 1,000 ms base delay and a 20,000 ms cap per delay. Those are SDK algorithm values, not a universal schedule for speech APIs or a substitute for the target service’s own guidance.

3. Set attempt and elapsed-time limits

Define both a maximum retry count and an overall deadline. Stop when either budget is exhausted, then return or surface the throttling failure so a caller can defer, queue, or alert on the work. A bounded budget prevents an outage from turning into an unending stream of additional requests.

4. Control admission and concurrency

Retry timing does not reduce the number of new jobs entering the service. When 429s persist, pause or slow admission, lower the number of concurrent jobs or streams, and ramp traffic back up gradually when appropriate. This matters particularly when the limit is about simultaneous streams or a provider detects a sudden rise in concurrency.

Provider guidance is not one universal schedule

These documented examples differ in context; use the guidance for the API and operation you actually call, not a schedule copied from another provider.

Provider and context Documented guidance What to take from it
Azure fast transcription Microsoft Learn recommends up to five retries for transient failures including HTTP 429, at intervals of 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 seconds. This is a specific fast-transcription recommendation, not a default for all Azure Speech endpoints. Azure fast transcription guidance.
Google Cloud Speech-to-Text SLA The SLA describes a first backoff interval of at least one second, increasing exponentially for consecutive errors to a maximum interval of 32 seconds. Keep this distinct from quota limits and from other Google APIs. Speech-to-Text SLA.
AWS SDK throttling retries The AWS SDK reference documents exponential backoff with full jitter for throttling, with a 1,000 ms base delay and a 20,000 ms per-delay cap. This describes the SDK retry algorithm; check the behavior of the SDK and service integration you use. AWS SDK retry behavior.
Amazon Transcribe streaming limit errors For relevant 429 LimitExceededException cases, AWS advises reducing concurrent streams and retrying with exponential backoff. Its streaming guide also recommends gradual ramp-up when concurrency is increasing rapidly. Address concurrency as well as delay. Amazon Transcribe error guidance and streaming guide.

Amazon Transcribe’s API reference states: “Reduce your number of concurrent streams and try your request again using an exponential backoff strategy.” That is especially relevant when a 429 reflects streaming concurrency rather than a short-lived request burst.

Account for shared quotas and request mode

A worker can appear quiet while the project or account it belongs to is over limit. Google says Cloud Speech-to-Text request limits apply at the developer-project level and are shared across applications and IP addresses using that project. Check aggregate use across services and deployments, not just the instance that received the 429. The quota page lists method-specific limits, notes that values can change, and separates request patterns; consult it for the API version and region in use rather than treating a figure as timeless.

Request mode also affects the right response. Google Cloud Speech-to-Text supports synchronous, asynchronous, and streaming recognition, which generate different request patterns. Compare the endpoint’s documented error classes, quota scope, concurrency constraints, retry schedule, and operation semantics before sharing a retry implementation across modes. Google’s Cloud Speech-to-Text overview describes the available recognition modes.

If an error indicates that a quota has been exhausted, inspect quota usage and the provider’s quota-change process instead of repeatedly resending the same work. Google’s error guidance describes quota exhaustion and points users toward reviewing or requesting quota changes. For Amazon Transcribe, distinguish a concurrency limit from a maximum session duration: AWS documents that the hard session-duration limit requires a new session, not repeated retries of the same one.

Retry-loop outline

The following is a general implementation pattern, not a combined algorithm specified by any single vendor. Substitute the target endpoint’s actual retryable errors, hints, and safe replay behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Classify the response. Return terminal client errors immediately; mark a 429 retryable only when the provider’s documentation supports retrying that error.
  2. Check operation state and idempotency before replaying audio or restarting a stream. Avoid duplicating work when the prior request may already have been accepted or processed.
  3. Consult provider-specific retry guidance and any server hint documented for that API.
  4. Calculate a capped delay with randomized spread, then wait. Do not use immediate retries or a synchronized fixed delay across a fleet.
  5. Retry only while both the attempt limit and total deadline permit. When either is exhausted, surface the failure or hand the job to a controlled queue.
  6. If throttling persists, reduce or pause new concurrent work; resume with gradual ramp-up where the provider recommends it.

Common mistakes that amplify throttling

  • Retrying immediately, which adds load while the service is already rejecting requests.
  • Giving every worker the same fixed delay, which can synchronize a second burst.
  • Leaving retry loops unbounded or retrying all errors indiscriminately.
  • Reducing delay without reducing concurrency when the actual limit is simultaneous streams.
  • Diagnosing only one process when a project-level quota is shared across applications or IPs.
  • Replaying audio or restarting streaming sessions without checking endpoint semantics, request state, and duplicate-processing consequences.
