How Android’s Find Hub Network Finds Lost Items—and What It Means for Your Privacy

Find Hub uses nearby Android devices to report where a compatible lost item was detected. Learn how encryption, network settings and sharing links affect privacy.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android’s Find Hub network finds lost items when participating Android devices detect compatible phones, accessories or tracker tags nearby over Bluetooth and securely report where the detection happened. The tag does not calculate or send its own GPS location. Google says the reported item location is end-to-end encrypted so only the owner, using their screen-lock credential, can view it; your privacy and the network’s coverage also depend on which finding setting you choose.

How Find Hub locates an item

  1. A participating Android device scans for nearby items. It uses Bluetooth to detect compatible lost devices or accessories.
  2. The detecting device reports the detection location. It securely sends Find Hub the location where it saw the item. The phone that made the detection is helping another owner; the tag itself is not sending GPS coordinates.
  3. The owner requests the item’s location. Find Hub shows the reported location and approximately when the item was last seen. Google says the owner does not receive other information about the detecting devices.

When a lost Android device is online, Find Hub may use its current location. If it is offline, the service may use an encrypted recent location stored by the device or encrypted reports from the crowdsourced network, depending on the device and settings. Google describes this mechanism in its Find Hub network help page and device-finding instructions.

Can Google see the location?

Google says item locations reported through the network are end-to-end encrypted. Each item has a unique key, and the owner accesses the location using their Android screen-lock PIN, pattern or password. Google also says it cannot identify a participating device when it reports the location of an item it detects. These are Google’s descriptions of the system; they should not be read as an independent security audit.

Encryption of item locations does not mean the service processes no supporting information. Google says Find Hub processes temporary device identifiers, timestamps for item detections and location requests, and information about paired or shared Fast Pair accessories. Its account of network privacy and encryption is in the Find Hub network documentation.

Choose how broadly your device participates

Find Hub’s offline-finding settings affect both network coverage and how reports are used. Google lists four choices:

Setting What it does Coverage and trade-off
Off Does not store encrypted recent locations or participate in the crowdsourced network. Online device finding and finding connected Fast Pair accessories can still work.
Without network Stores encrypted recent locations for your device and connected accessories, but does not use the crowdsourced network for tracker tags or other network reports. Does not use network detections to find tracker tags.
With network in busy places only Uses aggregated reports in busy areas. Find Hub waits for multiple Android devices to detect an item and calculates an aggregated location. Aims to help in places such as airports or busy footpaths while requiring multiple detections. A screen lock is needed for network help finding your own items.
With network everywhere Uses reports in busy and remote areas, including a report from one participating device. Can provide broader potential coverage, but does not require multiple detections before using a report. A screen lock is also needed for network help finding your own items.

The two network settings reflect a practical choice: busy-places mode aggregates multiple detections, while Everywhere can use a single detection, including in a remote area. Google’s explanation of these options is in its offline-finding settings guidance.

  • A PIN, pattern or password is required for network assistance finding your own items in either network mode.
  • Devices running Android 8.0 or earlier cannot participate in the broader crowdsourced network. They can still store encrypted recent locations for the device and connected accessories.
  • Some supported devices, including the Pixel 8 series, can be located for several hours after being turned off or running out of battery. Google’s stated conditions are that offline finding is set to Busy places only or Everywhere and Bluetooth and Location were enabled when the phone shut down. This capability is not established for all Android phones.

What Find Hub can locate—and choosing a tracker tag

Find Hub can locate Android phones and tablets, compatible Fast Pair accessories such as earbuds, and compatible tracker tags attached to belongings such as keys, wallets or bikes. Compatibility is model-specific. Before buying a tag, verify that the exact model is Find Hub-compatible in its product listing or the manufacturer’s documentation; a brand name alone is not confirmation.

Google’s May 10, 2023 announcement named Tile, Chipolo and Pebblebee as tracker makers joining the then-named Find My Device ecosystem, and discussed future updates for Pixel Buds and headphones from Sony and JBL. Those are historical examples, not a current list of compatible models. Google’s Find Hub compatibility guidance is the relevant starting point, but check the specific tag before purchase.

Sharing a tag’s location and protecting access

Owners can share an accessory or tracker tag with up to 10 loved ones. They can also create a link to share a lost tagged item’s location, for example with an airline. The link remains encrypted, but Google says it adds a key accessible to anyone signed in to a Google Account who visits the link. A recipient may also see contact details if the item is marked lost. A link expires automatically after seven days, and the owner can stop sharing sooner. Updated location reporting requires one of the owner’s devices to be online. See Google’s guidance on sharing item locations before sending a link.

Finding an item is different from locking or erasing a phone

Find Hub can help locate, secure or erase a lost Android device, but a network location report alone does not ensure remote locking or erasure will work. Google lists these requirements for remote securing or erasure: the device has power, mobile data or Wi-Fi, is signed in to a Google Account, has Find Hub enabled and is visible in Google Play. Review Google’s instructions for finding, securing or erasing a device if you need to take those steps.

What the network’s size claim does—and does not—tell you

Google said in a May 10, 2023 announcement that its planned Find My Device network would harness more than a billion Android devices worldwide. That is a dated company announcement, not a current count of active participants. The announcement also quoted Google engineering VP Erik Kay describing network location data as end-to-end encrypted; Google’s current help pages provide the fuller account of supporting data and participation settings. The 2023 announcement is available at Google’s Find My Device announcement.
