Give an AI agent access only to the files and capabilities its task requires. Start with the narrowest boundary your operating system or agent supports: a specific folder instead of an entire drive, read-only access instead of write access, and a separate standard account or isolated workspace when available. Review and revoke those grants when the task ends. These controls reduce exposure; they cannot guarantee that an agent will ignore malicious instructions embedded in documents or on-screen content.
Choose a boundary before you start
Use the least permissive setup that still lets the agent complete its task. Consider these controls from narrowest to broader isolation; the available options and their interfaces differ by platform and release.

Also decide whether the agent needs to modify files and connect to the network. Access to a folder does not have to mean permission to write to it, and a task that works offline may not need network access.
Restrict access on macOS
On macOS 10.15 and later, user consent is enforced for apps accessing Documents, Downloads, Desktop, iCloud Drive, and network volumes. Accessibility and automation access also require permission. Apple documents the protected locations and capabilities in its macOS file-access guidance.

Review the agent’s privacy grants
- Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Privacy on macOS 13 or later. Earlier macOS releases use different settings labels.
- Review the permissions for the actual agent app, including access to protected files, Accessibility, and Automation where those controls appear.
- Remove grants the task does not require. If the app needs access to a protected location, approve only the access needed rather than enabling broader storage access unnecessarily.
Apple says apps needing full-storage access must be explicitly added in system privacy settings. A permission prompt is a control over an app’s access; it is not a guarantee that the agent will use that access only as intended.
Restrict access on Windows
Windows access control determines whether an authenticated user can access a file or other object. Folder permissions, ownership, and inheritance all matter: permissions inherited from a parent folder may also apply to items inside it. Microsoft explains these fundamentals in its Access Control Overview.

Use a narrowly scoped workspace
- Put only task-related files in a dedicated folder and give the agent access to that folder rather than your whole drive or user profile.
- Check the folder’s permissions and inherited access, including whether the agent’s account can modify or delete files.
- Use a standard, non-administrator account for routine tasks where practical. Avoid granting administrator rights merely to make an agent’s workflow easier.
Use Windows Sandbox cautiously
Windows Sandbox can be configured with networking enabled or disabled and with host folders mapped into the sandbox. Availability depends on the Windows version and edition. Microsoft warns that exposing host folders can allow malicious software to affect the host or steal data; see Use and configure Windows Sandbox.
- Map only the folder the task needs, not a broad user directory.
- Prefer read-only access when the agent only needs to inspect files.
- Disable networking if the task does not require it and the configuration permits it.
A sandbox is not a reason to expose sensitive host data unnecessarily. Its isolation settings and the files you map jointly determine what is available to the agent.

Know which Windows controls are for developers
AppContainer is a process-isolation mechanism, not a universal privacy setting that every user can switch on for an installed agent. Microsoft describes restrictions on filesystem, network, process, and window access in its AppContainer isolation documentation. Access to many system resources is denied by default, with explicit grants used for permitted paths and capabilities.
For developer-managed workloads, Microsoft’s Create Process In Sandbox APIs documentation states that filesystem and network restrictions require AppContainer to be enabled with app_container = true; path settings without AppContainer fail. This implementation detail is relevant when building or configuring a sandboxed process, not a step ordinary users can apply in a general settings panel.

Separate the agent from your everyday account
When supported, running an agent under a distinct, low-privilege identity and in a contained workspace can reduce what it can see and do in your normal user context. Microsoft’s Windows 11 agentic security overview describes separate agent accounts, workspaces, limited initial privileges, and revocable access. It also frames some functionality as preview exploration, so availability depends on the feature and Windows release; do not assume every Windows device exposes these controls.
For managed agents, Microsoft’s secure-agent guidance, updated August 1, 2026, recommends a distinct identity, narrowly scoped access to the data and tools needed, and reviewing grants as the agent’s job changes.
Account for prompt injection and mistakes
An agent may encounter malicious instructions hidden in a document or user interface that attempt to override its intended task. Microsoft identifies this cross-prompt injection risk in its agentic security overview. If an agent is misled, access to files, tools, or networks can turn an instruction-following failure into a harmful action, such as data exposure or unwanted changes.
Permissions are therefore damage-limiting boundaries, not proof that an agent will behave safely. Keep high-impact actions under human review, especially sending information, installing software, or changing or deleting important files. Narrow permissions limit the possible impact even when an agent is steered off task.
