If you want to play physical discs on a disc-free PS5, the documented add-on is Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive. It attaches to compatible consoles; it is not a generic USB optical drive. Check your PS5’s model number before buying: the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition is not compatible with this add-on.
Which disc drive works with a disc-free PS5?
Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 is the official add-on described for compatible digital PS5 consoles. PlayStation’s setup instructions cover the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. The UK product listing identifies compatible CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 Digital Edition consoles and PS5 Pro. Check the exact model number and your region’s current PlayStation compatibility information, since listings and revisions can vary.

Check your console’s model number first
Do not assume that every PS5 Digital Edition can accept the drive. PlayStation’s media support page says the CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media, while identifying newer compatible model groups. If your console is a CFI-1000 Digital Edition, the CFI-ZDD1 is not the solution.
What can the CFI-ZDD1 play?
On compatible consoles, the drive adds support for physical PS5 games and supported PS4 titles on Blu-ray. PlayStation also lists 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD movie playback. Its support page details supported Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R/RE, and DVD formats. See the product listing and format guidance for the applicable formats and limits.

Why a USB disc drive is not the same thing
A USB extended-storage drive is for storing game and app data, not for reading optical discs. PlayStation says PS5 games stored on USB extended storage cannot be played directly from that storage; they must be copied back to console storage to play. See PlayStation’s USB extended-storage guidance. The cited PlayStation documentation does not identify a generic USB optical drive as a substitute for the CFI-ZDD1.
Setup requires an internet connection
During initial setup, the console must pair with the CFI-ZDD1 over the internet. PlayStation’s product information states: “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.” Follow the instructions for your model group in PlayStation’s installation guide.

In the official documentation cited here, Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 is the supported add-on path; there are no multiple documented external-drive options to rank. Treat it as a compatibility decision, not a roundup of interchangeable USB drives. Confirm your console model and regional listing before purchasing.
