Keep metrics and diagnostic endpoints off a broadly accessible client listener where practical. Then apply deny-by-default policies to limit what authenticated identities can do, and configure redundant audit destinations while accounting for paths OpenBao does not audit.
Start with the network paths OpenBao actually needs
OpenBao’s listener stanza configures how it accepts API requests. Set each listener’s address deliberately: a local-only service, a service on a private application network, and a service reached through a network front end have different valid bindings. Review every listener in the effective configuration, not just the first one you find. The TCP listener reference documents the address and TLS settings.

A private bind address is not a firewall. Routing, host firewall rules, cloud security groups, and any front-end proxy or load balancer determine which source systems can actually reach a bound interface. Confirm those controls separately, and allow only the client and operational systems that require access. The configuration documentation provides configuration context; it cannot establish whether your deployment’s surrounding network is restricted.
Separate metrics and diagnostic access from general API access
Monitoring endpoints can be useful, but they need not share the same exposure as the general API. The TCP listener reference shows a configuration pattern with metrics disallowed on a general API listener and a separate listener set to metrics-only, with unauthenticated metrics access enabled. This separates endpoint capability; it does not automatically limit which source addresses can connect to the metrics listener.

- Robust Connectivity Options: Equipped with 5 GE RJ45 ports, including 1 WAN port and 4 internal ports, this model provides essential connectivity and flexibility for various network configurations in a small-scale environment.
- High-Performance Security: Offers up to 1 Gbps IPS throughput and 600 Mbps threat protection throughput, using Fortinet’s purpose-built security processor technology to deliver industry-leading performance and protection for SSL encrypted traffic.
- Advanced Threat Protection: Integrated with Fortinet’s AI-powered FortiGuard Labs, the FortiGate 40F offers comprehensive cybersecurity, identifying and mitigating both known and unknown threats to maintain robust security across your network.
- Simplified Management and Deployment: Features a user-friendly management console that provides comprehensive network automation and visibility, coupled with Zero Touch Integration with Fortinet’s Security Fabric for easy deployment.
If you use a dedicated metrics listener, restrict it at the network layer to authorized monitoring systems. Apply the same deliberate reachability decisions to diagnostic routes such as profiling and in-flight request endpoints. Whether to expose them depends on operational need; do not make them broadly reachable simply because they are available in the configuration.
Protect client and cluster traffic with TLS
OpenBao’s security model identifies eavesdropping and tampering as threats. Clients use TLS to verify the server and establish a protected channel. Configure the listener’s certificate and key appropriately, and ensure clients validate the expected server identity; do not disable verification as a workaround for certificate problems.

- HARDWARE PLUS SECURITY SERVICES: FortiGate-60F Firewall Appliance bundled with 1 year of FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
- UNIFIED THREAT PROTECTION (UTP): Secures against advanced online threats with comprehensive web filtering and anti-botnet technologies.
- OPTIMIZED FOR MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES: Tailored for businesses needing robust security without the infrastructure of larger enterprises.
- RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
- EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.
Cluster member traffic has a separate trust boundary: OpenBao documents mutually authenticated TLS for server-to-server communication. Securing the client-facing listener does not, by itself, secure every cluster or storage path. Storage backends are treated as untrusted by design, and whether backend communication uses TLS depends on the backend and its configuration.

Use authentication and path policies after restricting reachability
Network rules decide which systems can reach OpenBao. Authentication establishes the identity of a client, while policies determine which paths and operations that identity may use. These are complementary controls: a permitted network source should not automatically receive broad API authority, and a narrow policy does not make an unnecessarily exposed listener safe.
OpenBao policies are path-based and deny by default. As the policy documentation puts it: “Policies are deny by default, so an empty policy grants no permission in the system.” Map authenticated identities to only the paths and operations required for their work, and avoid using broad administrative or root access as a routine convenience.

Plan for audit coverage and audit-device failure
Audit devices record API requests and responses, but some paths are exceptions. OpenBao’s audit documentation lists sys/init, sys/seal-status, sys/seal, sys/unseal, sys/leader, sys/health, and Raft bootstrap and join paths among the paths that are not audited. If listener settings permit unauthenticated access, sys/metrics, sys/pprof/*, and sys/in-flight-req are also listed as unaudited. Do not interpret the absence of a record for these paths as proof that they were never accessed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConfigure more than one viable audit destination when your operating model supports it. OpenBao attempts to write to all enabled devices and considers a request successful if at least one configured device can record it. If no enabled audit device can record a request, OpenBao will not respond to that request. Redundancy therefore helps preserve audit availability, but destinations still need operational monitoring and maintenance.
Apply the settings to your deployed release
OpenBao documentation is versioned. The listener, policy, and audit references cited here identify the 2.7.x documentation context, while the operator quick start is published under the next documentation path. Before applying a configuration example, check the documentation for the exact release you run and validate each setting against its supported syntax.
Quick Recap
- Inventory listeners: Inspect the effective configuration and record each address, enabled endpoint capability, and intended client population.
- Constrain reachability: Bind each listener to the intended interface, then use host and network controls to limit source systems. Test access from both authorized and unauthorized network locations.
- Separate operational endpoints: Where useful, move metrics to a metrics-only listener and restrict that listener to monitoring clients; decide explicitly whether diagnostic endpoints are needed.
- Verify transport trust: Check client certificate validation, listener certificate configuration, and cluster communication protections; review backend transport separately.
- Review identity permissions: Confirm authentication methods and path policies grant only required capabilities.
- Check audit operation: Enable appropriate audit devices, confirm destinations are available, and account for documented unaudited paths in monitoring and incident review.
