Keep LMCache reachable only by the vLLM clients and administrators that need it. The key is to treat its request endpoint and HTTP management frontend as separate listeners: configure each bind address deliberately, then limit access with the network controls available in your deployment. The HTTP admin API has no authentication, so leave it on loopback unless remote access is necessary and can be confined to a trusted network.
Identify the LMCache listeners before changing access
In the MP deployment documented by LMCache, the request endpoint and HTTP frontend are separate interfaces with separate host and port settings. The quickstart gives the request endpoint defaults as localhost:5555 and the HTTP frontend port as 8080. Request traffic uses ZMQ by default in that quickstart; gRPC is also supported. When vLLM and LMCache share a host
Use loopback for the request endpoint when the client and server run on the same host and the deployment supports that topology. This avoids making the request listener reachable on other network interfaces.

When vLLM connects remotely
Configure the LMCache request server to listen on the intended reachable interface, then configure the vLLM connector to use that endpoint. The quickstart shows a remote private-IP example; use an address appropriate to your own network rather than copying the example literally. A remotely reachable bind address is not an access policy by itself. Use the host firewall, container network controls, cloud security group, or Kubernetes NetworkPolicy available in your environment to allow only the intended vLLM clients. Apply rules to the actual addresses, ports, and transport in use. LMCache’s cited documentation does not prescribe a universal firewall rule set or describe authentication for the request transport.

Keep the HTTP management frontend private
The HTTP frontend has its own --http-host setting. LMCache documents 127.0.0.1 as its default host and says the admin API has no authentication; a non-loopback bind should be used only on a trusted network. LMCache HTTP API
- If management, health, status, or metrics access is needed only locally, retain loopback binding.
- If remote administration is required, bind only to an appropriate private interface and restrict network reachability to authorized administrators.
- Do not expose the management frontend to the public internet on the assumption that the request endpoint’s controls protect it; they are distinct surfaces.
Prefer internal Kubernetes service exposure
The LMCache operator documents ClusterIP-based services for in-cluster engine discovery and coordinator access. Prefer these internal service paths when clients are within the cluster, rather than publishing services externally without a specific need and restrictive network controls. The operator also documents hostNetwork as an option and warns of port-conflict implications. Because host networking changes the pod’s network namespace, enable it only when the deployment requires it and account for host-level exposure and port use.
Limit host impact as well as network reachability
Network restrictions do not prevent every consequence of a compromised pod. The operator’s default isolated IPC mode avoids granting host-level IPC access. Its legacy mode mounts the host’s /dev/shm, and hostIPC: true exposes the host IPC namespace; the operator documentation says legacy-mode engines should be deployed only in trusted environments. Leave the run-script API disabled
LMCache’s configuration reference documents run_script as an API that executes caller-supplied Python in-process. It explicitly cautions that restricted builtins are not a security boundary, and the feature is disabled by default. Deployment checklist
- Inventory the running request and HTTP listeners, their bind addresses, ports, and transports; verify container mappings and cluster Services as well.
- Bind the request endpoint to loopback for same-host clients, or to the required private interface for remote vLLM clients.
- Configure the vLLM connector with the matching request endpoint and ensure client and server transports agree.
- Keep the HTTP frontend on its documented loopback default unless remote management is required; if it is, restrict access to a trusted network.
- Use network controls to allow only the required clients and administrators to reach their respective listeners.
- For Kubernetes, prefer the operator’s internal ClusterIP service patterns, retain isolated IPC, and avoid unnecessary host networking or privileged access.
- Keep
run_scriptdisabled unless there is a reviewed operational need.
