Choose the recovery route that fits what happened
| Recovery route | Best for | What you need | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OneDrive website Recycle bin | Files or folders deleted from OneDrive online | The Microsoft account that contained the item | Microsoft’s current support guidance gives personal accounts 30 days and work or school accounts 93 days, unless an administrator changed the latter setting. |
| Windows Recycle Bin | Locally available files deleted from the synced OneDrive folder on this PC | The file must have been available locally | Online-only files deleted from OneDrive do not appear here. |
| Version history | An earlier version of a file after an overwrite or corruption | Version history must be enabled; use OneDrive on the web or File Explorer with the OneDrive sync app | A work or school administrator may disable versioning. |
| Restore your OneDrive | Rolling back many file and folder changes | A Microsoft 365 subscription | Microsoft documents a 30-day activity lookback; items created after the selected restore point are sent to the OneDrive Recycle bin. |
The retention periods and feature limits above are stated in Microsoft’s deletion-recovery guidance, OneDrive rollback guidance, and version-history guidance. Microsoft does not give those support pages a publication date in the retrieved material.

Restore a deleted file from OneDrive online
- Go to the OneDrive website and sign in with the personal, work, or school account that held the file. If it is missing, confirm you are not signed in to a different account; Microsoft lists that as a possible reason a file cannot be found.
- Open Recycle bin.
- Select the file or folder you want back, then choose Restore. OneDrive returns it to its original location when available.
According to Microsoft’s current support guidance, personal accounts can recover deleted items from the OneDrive Recycle bin for 30 days. Work or school accounts have a 93-day period unless their administrator changed the retention setting. Files shared with you by another person cannot be restored from your own OneDrive; ask the owner to restore or share the file again.
If the deleted item was in Personal Vault
In the OneDrive Recycle bin, select Show Personal Vault items to look for deleted vault content. The vault may need to be unlocked before you can access the item.

Check the Windows Recycle Bin for a locally stored copy
If the deleted file had been downloaded or otherwise available on the PC in the synced OneDrive folder, open the Windows Recycle Bin. Select the item, right-click it, and choose Restore. Windows puts it back in its original folder.
This route does not recover an online-only file deleted from OneDrive: that item will not appear in the PC’s Recycle Bin. For cloud deletion, use the OneDrive website’s Recycle bin instead. Microsoft explains this distinction in its OneDrive deletion guidance.

Recover earlier file contents with Version history
Version history is the appropriate route when the file still exists but its contents were overwritten, damaged, or changed. Microsoft says the feature works for all file types, though an organization’s administrator may turn versioning off.

Roll back OneDrive when many items changed
If a large number of files or folders were changed or deleted, Microsoft’s Restore your OneDrive feature can roll back activity to a point within the previous 30 days. Microsoft says the feature requires a Microsoft 365 subscription. It reverses file and folder actions, so review the activity before committing: items created after the chosen restore point are moved to the OneDrive Recycle bin.
Use the rollback feature for a broad recovery, not as the first step for one deleted file. Microsoft describes the process in its Restore your OneDrive guidance.

If the file is missing from the recovery options
- Check that you signed in to the account where the file was stored, including any separate personal and work or school accounts.
- Look in both the OneDrive website’s Recycle bin and, if the file was stored locally, the Windows Recycle Bin.
- For a work or school account, contact your Microsoft 365 or OneDrive administrator. Microsoft’s missing-file guidance says an administrator may be able to investigate further, but organization-specific retention policies and other recovery arrangements vary.
- If a prior version may contain the missing content, check Version history if it is available.
Microsoft says files permanently deleted from the OneDrive Recycle bin cannot be restored through its documented consumer recovery process. Its guidance does not establish whether a particular organization may have additional retention, legal-hold, administrator, or backup options, so ask the administrator rather than assuming either that recovery is possible or that it is not.
