After reinstalling Windows on a Dell PC, do not assume every driver or app has returned. Start with the computer’s Service Tag to check Dell’s recovery options. On supported models, SupportAssist recovery can restore factory software and essential drivers; use Dell Support or Dell Command Update for driver gaps, and reinstall other apps and licenses yourself.
Back up your files before resetting or reinstalling Windows. Recovery can erase data, and creating Dell USB recovery media will erase the selected USB drive.

Choose the right Dell recovery route
Recovery availability and options vary by Dell model and the Windows edition originally installed. Find the Service Tag on the computer or in its BIOS, then enter it on Dell Support to view model-specific support information.
| Route | What it can restore | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| SupportAssist OS Recovery | Depending on the system and available recovery state, Restore System returns Windows and default applications to the factory-shipped state. Cloud Image Restore downloads Windows with default drivers and applications. | Available only on selected Dell systems with factory-installed Windows 10 or 11. Options vary by model. Dell does not support SupportAssist OS Recovery on Qualcomm processor computers. |
| Dell OS Recovery Tool | Creates USB recovery media for the original operating system shipped with the Dell computer, including its factory-installed drivers. | Requires a compatible working Windows PC, internet access, the Service Tag, and a blank USB drive with at least 16 GB free. The tool formats and erases the USB drive. |
| Windows Push-Button Reset | Dell’s general reinstall guidance recommends trying this Windows recovery option on Qualcomm processor computers. | Follow the Windows instructions for the specific device; do not assume the standard SupportAssist steps apply. |
Check Dell’s current instructions for your exact model before starting. If a recovery route will not boot or is unavailable, use another route supported for that computer rather than assuming every Dell offers the same options.

Prepare before creating recovery media or resetting Windows
- Back up personal files and make a note of non-Dell applications you will need to reinstall.
- Find product keys or license details for paid software. Dell notes that a reset removes programs or drivers installed by the user; some applications, including Microsoft Office, may require a key to activate again.
- If using Dell OS Recovery Tool, use a blank USB drive with at least 16 GB of free space. The tool formats the chosen drive and deletes its contents, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
- Run the recovery tool on a working Windows 10 or 11 computer with internet access. Its version must match that computer’s architecture (x64 or ARM64); it does not need to match the operating system originally shipped on the Dell being restored.
Dell says recovery-image ISO files are typically 5–16 GB, with download time depending on network speed. Treat this as a variable file-size range, not a guarantee for a particular model.
Restore Windows and run SupportAssist Recovery Assistant
On a supported computer, use the available SupportAssist OS Recovery option and follow Dell’s on-screen instructions. Dell’s OS recovery image FAQ asks, “Does the recovery image contain the latest device drivers for my Dell computer?” Its answer is no guarantee: the image contains factory-installed drivers for the platform, but may not have the latest versions.

After a supported Reset and update, SupportAssist Recovery Assistant can install available Windows operating-system updates and software updates, show available apps and features, and restore backed-up system files and settings. Dell says it installs essential drivers, not every optional or advanced driver. For example, an advanced graphics driver may need to be installed separately.
Install remaining drivers from Dell
Use Dell Support for the exact model
Enter the Service Tag at Dell Support, open the model’s Drivers & Downloads page, and check for current drivers that are missing or needed after recovery. Dell’s factory recovery image may contain older drivers; do not treat a factory driver as proof that the newest version is installed. Prefer the driver listed for your precise model and Windows version.

Use Advanced Driver Restore on supported models
Dell documents Advanced Driver Restore for Windows Re-Installation in Dell Command Update for Dell Pro, Dell Pro Max, Latitude, OptiPlex, and Precision workstations. It is not a universal option for every Dell PC.
- Install or open Dell Command Update for the supported model.
- Right-click Dell Command Update and choose Run as administrator.
- Open Settings and enable Advanced Driver Restore for Windows Re-Installation if the feature is not already enabled.
- Return to the driver restore option and choose the option to download and install the complete driver library, following the current prompts.
For availability and current steps, use Dell’s Advanced Driver Restore guidance. If your model is outside the documented product families or the feature is absent, use the model’s Dell Support driver page instead.

Restore Dell apps, third-party apps, and licenses
SupportAssist Recovery Assistant can install factory-installed Dell software. That does not mean it will restore every program that was on the computer before reinstalling Windows. Reinstall non-Dell applications from their publishers or your organization’s approved source, then sign in or enter the relevant license information. Check separately for personal files and app settings that were not included in a backup.

- The recovery option is missing: Confirm the exact model’s eligibility and use Dell’s current model-specific instructions. Qualcomm processor computers are excluded from SupportAssist OS Recovery; Dell recommends trying Windows Push-Button Reset for them.
- A driver is still missing after recovery: Check the model’s Drivers & Downloads page. Recovery Assistant installs essential drivers, not every optional or advanced driver.
- The USB recovery tool will not create media: Confirm the working PC is running Windows 10 or 11, is connected to the internet, and that the tool matches its x64 or ARM64 architecture. The USB must have at least 16 GB free and will be erased.
- An app is gone or will not activate: Reinstall the app and retrieve its license or product key. User-installed programs can be removed during reset.
Dell’s recovery tool is described as a way to download a Windows image tailored to a specific computer model. Its download and recovery-media instructions provide the current workflow. Dell support pages and supported model lists can change, so use the current directions shown for your Service Tag.
