Start by checking where the conversation went: Samsung Messages has a Trash folder with a 30-day recovery window, while Google Messages lets you restore an archived conversation but not one that was deleted. If the message is gone from the app’s reversible folders, recovery depends on a Samsung Cloud, Google account, or Smart Switch backup that was made before the message disappeared.
First, identify the messaging app and check its folders
Recovery steps depend on the app that held the conversation. Menu names can vary by Galaxy model, software version, carrier, and region.

Samsung Messages: restore from Trash
- Open Samsung Messages.
- Tap More options, then Trash.
- Touch and hold the message or conversation and tap Restore.
Samsung says items remain recoverable from Trash for 30 days; after that, manually deleted items are automatically removed from Trash. See Samsung’s instructions for recovering deleted messages.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGoogle Messages: check Archived
Open Google Messages, tap the profile menu, and check Archived. Select the conversation and choose Unarchive if it was archived. Archiving hides a conversation; it is not the same as deleting it. Samsung says messages actually deleted in Google Messages are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered through the app. Samsung’s deleted-message guidance covers this distinction.

Another messaging app
Do not apply Samsung Messages steps to a different app. Samsung advises users to consult the developer of the messaging app they used.
Restore from a backup made before the loss
A backup route helps only if it exists and includes the missing messages. Check the account and backup options available on your own phone before starting a restore.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. Samsung Cloud
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accounts and backup.
- Under Samsung Cloud, tap Restore data.
- Choose the relevant device backup, select Messages, then tap Restore.
These steps follow Samsung’s Samsung Cloud restore guidance. Restore is possible only if the backup contains the messages. Samsung says cloud backup support and contents can vary by country, carrier, operating system, and phone model; some large message files may not be backed up. Samsung’s backup-availability guidance describes those limitations.
Google account backup
Samsung’s US guidance describes restoring Google-backed messages while setting up a phone for the first time or after a factory reset: sign in to the Google account during setup and follow the restore prompts. Samsung says Google-backed data can be restored only to a phone running the same or a newer Android version. Samsung’s recovery guide and restore instructions explain the setup context.

The cited instructions do not provide a simple in-place recovery button for a phone that is already set up. A factory reset erases data on the phone, so do not reset solely to try this route until you have checked what else needs backing up and understand what the reset will remove.
Smart Switch: another phone or a saved backup
Smart Switch can transfer messages from another phone or restore a prior backup from a PC or Mac, SD card, USB flash drive, or SSD. The exact steps depend on where the backup is stored. Follow Samsung’s Smart Switch restore instructions.

- From another phone: On the source phone, choose Send data; on the Galaxy receiving the messages, choose Receive data. Select Messages during transfer.
- From a PC or Mac: Connect the Galaxy to the computer running Smart Switch and choose Restore. Messages in the computer backup cannot be read as conversations on the computer; they can be read after transfer to a phone.
- From an SD card, USB flash drive, or SSD: Connect the storage to the Galaxy and select Restore in Smart Switch. A USB storage device may require an OTG adapter; confirm that the adapter, phone port, and drive are compatible.
Choose the route that matches what you have
| Recovery route | What must be true | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Messages Trash | The item remains in Trash and the folder is available. | Samsung’s recovery window is 30 days. Samsung support. |
| Google Messages Archived | The conversation was archived, not deleted. | Samsung says a deleted conversation cannot be recovered in the app. Samsung support. |
| Samsung Cloud | A backup containing the messages exists and restore is supported on the device. | Support and backup contents may vary by region, carrier, OS, model, and file size. Samsung support. |
| Google account backup | A prior backup exists and you are restoring during setup or after a factory reset. | The destination phone must use the same or a higher Android version, according to Samsung. Samsung support. |
| Smart Switch | You have a source phone or an earlier Smart Switch backup. | The restore method depends on the backup medium; computer backup messages are readable as conversations only after transfer to a phone. Samsung support. |
Can you recover deleted texts without a backup?
If a message was permanently deleted from the app’s Trash or deleted in Google Messages, and no earlier backup contains it, Samsung’s documented recovery routes do not establish a reliable way to get it back. Samsung Messages’ Trash and pre-existing backups are the recovery options described in its support guidance. Avoid assuming that a third-party utility can recover the messages; Samsung’s instructions do not validate such a method.
