| Situation | Preferred method | What it preserves | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-managed Windows server with filesystem access | Stop the process, back up the data directory, then rename the customized dedicatedserver.cfg and start the server |
Your backup preserves saves, logs, configuration and other files; renaming is reversible | A bad path, permissions problem or incorrect replacement settings can prevent the server from starting |
| Rented server with a control panel | Stop the instance and use the provider’s Reinstall or reset action with Default values | Only files the provider explicitly retains as backups; retention differs by host | A reinstall may delete custom configuration, mods and world data |
Do not start by deleting individual JSON lines or editing a live file. The server can rewrite configuration while it is running, leaving a partial file or silently restoring the old value.
Back up everything before the reset
The backup is what lets you recover a world if the reset points to a new save slot or a reinstall removes files.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the normal stop command or the hosting panel’s Stop control and wait until the process has exited. Do not modify configuration while the server is still writing it.
- Locate the active user-data directory. The documented Windows default is
C:Users<user>AppDataLocalLowEndnightSonsOfTheForestDS. If the launch command contains-userdatapath, that override is the location that matters instead of the default. - Copy the complete directory. Include configuration files, saves, logs and any other server files. Copy it to a different disk or an external drive, not merely to another folder inside the live directory.
- Label the backup. Include the date and identify the intended save slot. Keeping the pre-reset copy separate prevents a reinstall or cleanup routine from deleting both the live data and the only backup.
- Check that the copy is usable. Confirm that the save folders and
dedicatedserver.cfgare present and that the backup can be opened from the separate location before proceeding.
Host Havoc’s reinstall guidance states: “Before you start: Reinstalling will delete all server files except backups and re-downloads a fresh default installation.” That warning is specific to its process, but it illustrates why a provider’s backup-retention rules must not be assumed.

Reset a self-managed Windows server
This procedure returns a manually managed installation to the game’s generated configuration without destroying the original file.
1. Stop and identify the active installation
Stop the dedicated-server process and determine whether the launch script uses -userdatapath. A common mistake is backing up the default LocalLow location while the service is actually writing to an overridden directory. Use the directory that the running service is configured to use.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

2. Preserve the current configuration
In the active data directory, find dedicatedserver.cfg. Rename the file to something such as dedicatedserver.cfg.backup after the server is stopped. Renaming is safer than immediate deletion because you can compare values or restore the file if the reset does not produce the expected result. Do not leave two files with the same active name; only the newly generated or selected default file should be called dedicatedserver.cfg.
3. Start once so the default JSON is created
Start the server with the same executable and launch arguments, then allow it to finish initialization. The configuration guide for the dedicated server notes that these files are not present immediately after installation; the game must be started once for the default files to be created. If the server creates a new configuration, stop it again before making any edits.

Empty or null values in the generated configuration use the game’s defaults. If no file appears, the process may be writing to a different -userdatapath, may not have permission to write there, or may be exiting before initialization completes. Check the service log and the launch command before trying another reset.
4. Reapply only essential settings
Open the newly generated file with a JSON-aware editor. Restore only values required for your operation, such as the public name, player limit, password, save slot and game mode. Avoid copying the entire old file back into place: that would also restore the setting you were trying to remove and could reintroduce an incompatible or obsolete value.
5. Start a controlled test
Start the server and wait for it to register. From a test account, connect before announcing that the server is available. Confirm the displayed name, password behavior, selected save slot and game mode. Inspect the logs for configuration or save-loading errors. Keep the renamed file and the full backup until the test succeeds; only then decide whether the old file can be archived.

Reset a rented server from its hosting panel
Panel labels vary, but the safe sequence is consistent: stop, back up or download the world, reinstall with defaults, wait for completion, then configure and test.
1. Stop the instance
Use the provider panel’s Stop control and wait for the status to show that the server is offline. A reset started while the instance is active can race with file writes or leave an incomplete installation.
2. Download or create a provider backup
Use the panel’s backup, file manager or download function to preserve the world and configuration outside the live instance. Verify what the provider’s backup system actually retains. “Backup” can mean only scheduled archives, while a reinstall may remove current files that are not included in those archives.
3. Select the reset action and default values
In Host Havoc’s documented interface, the path is More > Reinstall. Leave the option at Default values unless you have a specific reason to choose another option. The reinstall downloads a fresh default installation and the server remains offline during the operation.
4. Allow the reinstall to finish
Host Havoc says its process can take up to 20 minutes. That is a provider-specific upper estimate, not a universal duration for every host. Do not repeatedly click reinstall or upload files while the operation is running; wait for the panel to report completion.

5. Reconfigure the minimum required values
Set the server name, password and administrator accounts again, along with any other values needed for your community. Start the fresh server once and confirm that it reaches a normal running state before restoring a saved world.
6. Restore the world only after the clean test
Once the default installation starts and accepts a test connection, stop it and restore the saved world to the provider’s documented save location. Set the intended SaveSlot, start again and verify that the expected progress appears. If the world is missing, stop immediately and use the backup rather than creating new saves over the same slot.
Provider-specific file locations
Sparked Host identifies /home/container/serverconfig/dedicatedserver.cfg as the file used to activate default settings. A different provider may use another path or expose no filesystem access at all. Follow the panel’s current path and controls instead of assuming that a Windows directory or a Linux container path applies everywhere.
Understand what dedicatedserver.cfg controls
dedicatedserver.cfg is JSON. It is not the older ServerSettings.ini format used by unrelated games, so an INI editor or INI-style syntax is inappropriate. A generated file can contain network, identity, save and gameplay sections.
| Configuration area | Examples of values | Why you may reapply it |
|---|---|---|
| Network identity | IpAddress, GamePort, QueryPort, BlobSyncPort |
Required when your firewall, DNS record or provider allocation depends on fixed ports |
| Server access | ServerName, MaxPlayers, Password, LanOnly |
Controls how players find and join the instance |
| World and save behavior | SaveSlot, SaveMode, SaveInterval |
Determines which world is opened and how saves are handled |
| Gameplay mode | GameMode, GameSettings, CustomGameModeSettings |
Restores the intended difficulty and custom rules without carrying over unrelated edits |
| Logging and other objects | Logging options and additional generated JSON objects | Usually best left at generated defaults unless you have a documented operational need |
Keep JSON syntax intact: use the generated spelling and capitalization, retain commas and braces, and do not add comments inside the file. If you are unsure about a value, leave the generated default in place and change one setting at a time.

Rename versus reinstall: practical trade-offs
| Decision factor | Rename or regenerate on a self-managed server | Panel reinstall on rented hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Data preservation | Highest control when the complete directory is backed up; the old configuration remains available under a new name | Depends on the provider’s backup and retention behavior; custom files and world data may be deleted |
| Access required | Filesystem and process or service access | Panel permission to stop and reinstall; file access may be optional |
| Repeatability | Manual, but easy to repeat with dated backups and a documented launch path | Often a one-click workflow, but the exact labels and retained files vary by provider |
| Downtime | Usually the time needed to stop, regenerate, edit and test | Includes the reinstall duration; Host Havoc says its process can take up to 20 minutes |
| Customization after reset | Reapply selected JSON values directly | Re-enter settings in the panel or edit the provider-exposed configuration file |
If preserving a world is the priority, use the self-managed rename/regeneration route when you have full access. If you only have panel access, treat reinstall as destructive until you have a separate, verified copy of the world.
Verify the reset before inviting players
- Process state: the server starts without repeated crashes or configuration parse errors.
- Discovery: it appears in the expected list, or the direct address and query port respond as intended.
- Authentication: the password and administrator permissions work with a test account.
- Save selection: the configured
SaveSlotopens the intended world rather than a new or different slot. - Gameplay: the selected
GameModeand essential game settings are active. - Persistence: make a small in-game change, save, restart once, and confirm that the change remains.
- Logs: review the startup and save messages before giving players the connection details.
Troubleshoot common reset problems
The default file is not recreated
Confirm that the server was actually started after the old file was renamed, that the service account can write to the active directory, and that -userdatapath is not pointing somewhere else. A process that exits during startup may never reach the file-creation stage; use its logs to identify the first error.
The server starts, but the old settings remain
Check that the renamed file is not being copied back by a startup script or panel template. On rented hosting, select the provider’s default-values option rather than a saved custom profile. Stop the instance before changing the file and restart it after the change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe world appears to be gone
Do not create or overwrite another save in the same slot. Stop the server, compare the configured SaveSlot with the slot recorded in your backup, and restore the world only after the clean default installation has been tested. If you used a provider reinstall, check which backups the provider retained; the reinstall may have removed unarchived world files.
The server will not start after editing JSON
Restore the generated file, then reapply one value at a time. Check for missing quotation marks, braces or commas and for accidental text copied from an INI file. Keep the original generated file and the renamed pre-reset file untouched until the server runs normally.
Players connect but see the wrong mode or rules
Inspect GameMode, GameSettings and CustomGameModeSettings, then restart after each correction. Verify the save slot as well: a correct game mode paired with the wrong world can look like a configuration failure.
Mods or custom files disappeared
A provider reinstall can remove custom files along with the old installation. Restore only files you trust from the external backup, and test the unmodified default server first. If a mod changes configuration, add it after the base server has passed the connectivity and save-persistence checks.
A repeatable reset routine for future incidents
- Record the launch command, including any
-userdatapathoverride, and note the current save slot. - Stop the server cleanly and create a dated copy of the complete data directory or provider backup.
- Use the least-destructive reset available: rename the configuration on a self-managed server, or choose the panel’s default-values reinstall when no filesystem alternative exists.
- Start the untouched default installation once and confirm that it runs.
- Reapply only the server identity, access, save and gameplay values that are genuinely required.
- Test discovery, authentication, save loading and persistence with a non-primary account.
- Keep the backup until players have connected successfully and the intended world has survived a restart.
This sequence separates configuration recovery from world recovery. It gives you a clean baseline while preserving a path back to the previous server state if the selected slot, provider backup or custom setting was not what you expected.
