If an MSI Afterburner overclock is making Windows or games crash, you usually do not need to reinstall Windows or replace hardware. Open Afterburner, click the circular-arrow Reset control, apply the defaults, and disable the settings that reload an overclock at startup. If an OC Scanner curve keeps returning, use OC Scanner > Revert. When normal Windows startup is unusable, reach Safe Mode through Windows Recovery Environment, stop Afterburner from applying its startup settings, then reset the GPU normally.
What the recovery does
An unstable overclock is a software setting stored or reapplied by MSI Afterburner. The documented fix is to return the GPU to its default setting, prevent Afterburner from automatically applying the bad values, and only then restart or test the system. MSI documents two ways to apply defaults: the circular-arrow Reset control and the Ctrl+D shortcut. MSI says the shortcut automatically applies defaults while preserving saved profiles.

There are two separate startup choices to check. Start with Windows launches Afterburner when Windows starts. Apply overclocking at system startup applies the current voltage, clock and fan-control settings during startup. Turning off only one can leave the other path active, so disable automatic overclock application while troubleshooting.

What you need—and what you do not
This is a software recovery procedure. You need a Windows installation that can reach Afterburner, or access to Windows Recovery Environment if normal startup is failing. You do not need to buy a replacement graphics card, a repair tool, or another accessory to perform the documented reset. A Windows factory reset is also unnecessary as a first response to an Afterburner setting.
Menu text and visual placement can differ between Afterburner versions and skins. The important labels are Reset, Start with Windows, Apply overclocking at system startup, and, for a persistent scanner curve, OC Scanner > Revert.
If Windows opens normally
1. Reset the GPU with the circular-arrow control
- Open MSI Afterburner from the Start menu or its existing shortcut.
- Locate the circular-arrow Reset control in the main Afterburner window. Skins and versions can move or rename visual elements, but the reset action is the control MSI documents for returning the main GPU to its default setting.
- Click Reset. The sliders and values should move back to their default state.
- Click Apply if the interface still shows an unapplied change. Do not close the program before the reset has been applied.
MSI’s support documentation describes Reset as the way to revert the GPU to defaults. Its wording is: “To revert the GPU to default settings during testing, simply click ‘Reset’ (circular arrow icon) or use Ctrl+D for automatic application, ensuring your saved profiles remain intact.” Read the full control description in MSI’s How to use MSI Afterburner support documentation.
2. Use Ctrl+D when you need a keyboard shortcut
With the Afterburner window active, press Ctrl+D. MSI documents this shortcut as an automatic application of default GPU settings, with saved profiles left intact. This is useful when the pointer is difficult to use or when you want a quick, repeatable reset without deleting the profiles you may want to inspect later.
Resetting the active GPU state is not the same as deleting every profile. The goal is to stop the unstable values from being active; profile preservation means you can remove or edit an old profile later instead of losing all stored configurations immediately.
3. Confirm that the active state is actually back at defaults
- After clicking Reset or pressing
Ctrl+D, check that the main controls no longer show the overclock values you were using. - Apply the state if the interface presents an Apply button.
- Do not load an overclocked profile while checking whether the crashes have stopped.
- Keep Afterburner open long enough to verify that the controls do not immediately jump back to the previous values.
This step matters because a reset can appear successful while a startup or scanner setting is waiting to reapply the curve. If values return before the next reboot, move to the startup and OC Scanner sections below instead of repeatedly clicking Reset.
Reset versus Ctrl+D
| Method | Best use | Profile effect |
|---|---|---|
| Reset circular-arrow control | Visual, direct reset from the main window. | Returns the active GPU controls to defaults; MSI documents saved profiles as remaining available. |
Ctrl+D |
Fast keyboard-driven application of default settings. | Automatically applies defaults while preserving saved profiles. |
| OC Scanner > Revert | A scanner-generated curve keeps returning after restart or shutdown. | Reverts the scanner curve; it is a separate action from the main Reset control. |
Use either Reset or Ctrl+D for the ordinary return to defaults. Choose Revert when the specific symptom is a persistent OC Scanner curve. Revert is not a reason to delete profiles, and deleting profiles is not required for the documented recovery.

| Control | What it does | What to do during recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Start with Windows | Launches MSI Afterburner when Windows starts. | Turn it off if you need Afterburner completely out of the startup sequence while diagnosing the crash. |
| Apply overclocking at system startup | Applies the current voltage, clock and fan-control settings when Windows starts. | Turn it off so an unstable setting is not automatically applied again. |
Open Afterburner’s settings or main-window startup area and clear the relevant checkboxes. Menu placement can differ by version or skin, so look for the exact labels Start with Windows and Apply overclocking at system startup. MSI’s Afterburner support instructions document both functions and the reset procedure.
- Disable Apply overclocking at system startup first. This is the setting that matters most when a bad clock, voltage or fan-control value is being reapplied.
- If crashes occur as soon as Afterburner launches, also disable Start with Windows.
- Click Apply or OK, depending on the dialog shown by your version.
- Restart Windows only after the automatic application setting has been cleared.
Disabling Start with Windows is a broader troubleshooting measure: it stops the application from launching automatically. Disabling Apply overclocking at system startup targets the setting that applies voltage, clock and fan-control values. If the system is unstable as soon as the desktop appears, clear both so neither startup path interferes with diagnosis.
MSI’s overclocking guide also describes applying settings at Windows startup and returning to defaults with Reset or Ctrl+D. See MSI’s MSI Afterburner Overclocking Guide & Undervolting Guide for that documented behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the overclocking curve returns after a reboot
Use OC Scanner’s Revert command
An OC Scanner-generated curve can continue to be applied even after you reset the main controls. MSI’s FAQ for this specific symptom recommends reverting the scanner result:
- Open MSI Afterburner.
- Open OC Scanner.
- Click Revert.
- Return to the main Afterburner window and use Reset or
Ctrl+Dagain. - Make sure Apply overclocking at system startup remains disabled before restarting.
The relevant symptom is a GPU core-clock curve that keeps applying after shutdown or restart. MSI Canada lists OC Scanner > Revert as the complete reversion for that case in its FAQ, last updated August 1, 2022: Why my GPU core clock keeps applying Afterburner overclocking curve setting after I restart or shutdown PC?
If the curve is visible but Windows is otherwise stable, do not keep pressing the main Reset control as a substitute for Revert. Use the scanner’s own command, then reset the active state and recheck the startup setting. This separates a scanner curve that is being reapplied from an ordinary slider change.
When Windows will not stay usable
If the overclock is applied early enough to cause a black screen, repeated crashes or an unusable desktop, use Windows Recovery Environment to start in Safe Mode. Microsoft explains that Safe Mode starts Windows with basic device drivers and default settings, which can help isolate a startup problem.

Enter Safe Mode through Windows Recovery Environment
- Open Windows Recovery Environment. If Windows reaches the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. If it cannot reach that screen, Windows may enter recovery after repeated failed starts; the exact behavior depends on the device and Windows version.
- Choose Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options.
- Choose Startup Settings.
- Select Restart.
- When the numbered Startup Settings list appears, choose the option for Safe Mode. If you need networking for another repair task, use the separately listed Safe Mode with Networking option; ordinary Safe Mode is sufficient for changing Afterburner startup behavior.
Microsoft’s documented route is Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, followed by the Safe Mode choice. The labels and available options can vary with Windows version and device configuration. See Microsoft’s Windows startup settings instructions.

Prevent the bad setting from loading in Safe Mode
- Once the Safe Mode desktop appears, open MSI Afterburner if it is available.
- Clear Apply overclocking at system startup. If Afterburner itself is launching and causing trouble, clear Start with Windows too.
- Apply the changes, then restart Windows normally.
- After normal Windows starts without the overclock, open Afterburner and click Reset or press
Ctrl+D. If the curve was produced by OC Scanner, open OC Scanner and click Revert as well.
Safe Mode is an access and isolation step, not a replacement for resetting the Afterburner configuration. The final reset should be performed after you can use normal Windows again, with the automatic startup application disabled.
Safe Mode is deliberately narrower than a factory reset: it changes how Windows starts for troubleshooting and uses basic drivers and default settings. It does not erase applications or personal data as a factory-reset operation can. Once normal startup is available, return to Afterburner and complete the reset rather than leaving the system in Safe Mode.
A recovery decision table
| What you see | Most direct action | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows and the desktop work, but games crash after the overclock. | Click Reset or press Ctrl+D, then apply the defaults. |
Disable Apply overclocking at system startup before rebooting. |
| The values return immediately after a reset. | Disable both startup controls while troubleshooting. | If a curve remains, use OC Scanner > Revert. |
| The curve returns after every restart or shutdown. | Use OC Scanner > Revert. | Confirm startup application is still disabled. |
| Windows crashes or becomes unusable before you can change Afterburner. | Use Windows Recovery Environment and start Safe Mode. | Prevent Afterburner from launching or applying its startup setting, then reboot normally and reset. |
| You are considering a Windows factory reset. | Do not use it as the first response to an Afterburner overclock. | Try the documented Afterburner reset and Safe Mode route first. |
How to check that the recovery worked
A successful recovery has three observable parts: the active Afterburner controls no longer show the unstable values, the settings do not return when Windows restarts, and the original crash behavior is no longer triggered by the default GPU state.
- With the startup controls disabled, restart Windows once.
- Open Afterburner and check that the overclock has not been automatically applied.
- Leave the GPU at defaults while you open the application or game that previously crashed.
- If the system remains stable, keep the default state for additional normal use before deciding whether to create a new, more conservative profile.
Do not treat one successful launch as proof that an aggressive setting is safe. If you later experiment again, save a profile only after the default state is confirmed stable and keep automatic startup application disabled until the new setting has been tested deliberately.
Use the restart as a persistence test, not merely as a way to close the program. If the controls remain at defaults after the reboot and the previously affected workload no longer crashes, the software recovery has addressed the overclock path. If the values return, revisit both startup controls and the OC Scanner Revert step before considering broader Windows troubleshooting.
What not to do
Do not jump straight to a Windows factory reset
A Windows factory reset is a system-recovery operation, not the documented remedy for an unstable Afterburner value. It can remove applications, settings and data depending on the option chosen. The cited MSI and Microsoft instructions address the narrower problem directly: reset Afterburner, stop automatic application, use OC Scanner’s Revert when appropriate, and use Safe Mode if startup is impaired.
Do not assume that closing Afterburner removed the overclock
Closing the window does not by itself prove that a startup rule or OC Scanner curve has been removed. Check the two startup controls and, when the symptom is a returning curve, use Revert in OC Scanner.
Do not delete profiles before you need to
MSI documents Ctrl+D as applying defaults while leaving saved profiles intact. Preserve them until the system is stable so you can identify which profile was responsible or remove it later with a clear reason.

Frequently encountered edge cases
Reset worked, but the first reboot crashes again
This usually indicates that an automatic startup path was still enabled. Boot back into Safe Mode if necessary, disable Apply overclocking at system startup and, if Afterburner launches automatically, disable Start with Windows. Then return to normal Windows and repeat the reset.
Afterburner opens, but the old curve is visible in OC Scanner
Use OC Scanner > Revert, then apply the default state again. A visible scanner curve is a separate reason to use Revert; repeatedly clicking the main Reset control does not substitute for that documented action.
You cannot find the controls
Afterburner skins and versions can place controls differently. Look for the circular-arrow reset icon and the exact startup labels named above. If the main window is too small or a custom skin obscures a label, switch to a standard skin or open the settings dialog and inspect the startup options there.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Leave the GPU at defaults and keep automatic startup application off. The recovery procedure establishes a known software baseline; it does not certify that any particular overclock is stable on your GPU, cooling system or power configuration.
Do I need to reinstall Afterburner?
No reinstall is part of MSI’s documented recovery. First use Reset or Ctrl+D, disable the startup controls, and use OC Scanner’s Revert if the curve persists. Escalate to Safe Mode only when normal Windows startup prevents those changes.
Will resetting remove saved profiles?
MSI says Ctrl+D applies defaults while preserving saved profiles, and its documented Reset instruction is presented as a way to revert the GPU without discarding those profiles. Do not delete profiles merely because the active overclock caused a crash.
Which startup checkbox should I clear first?
Clear Apply overclocking at system startup first because it controls automatic application of voltage, clock and fan-control settings. If Afterburner itself must not launch while you diagnose the problem, also clear Start with Windows.

Best Value
Recommended order, in one checklist
- Open MSI Afterburner if Windows is usable.
- Click the circular-arrow Reset control, or press
Ctrl+D, and apply the defaults. - Disable Apply overclocking at system startup.
- Disable Start with Windows if Afterburner itself must not launch during troubleshooting.
- If a scanner curve returns, open OC Scanner and click Revert.
- Restart and verify that the old values do not return.
- If normal startup is unusable, use Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, select Safe Mode, disable the startup behavior there, and then reset Afterburner in normal Windows.
- Avoid a factory reset unless a separate Windows problem—not this GPU setting—requires it.
Sources and version caveats
The control names and recovery actions above come from MSI’s official Afterburner support material and MSI’s FAQ, with Safe Mode navigation from Microsoft Support. MSI notes the functions, while the visual placement can vary by Afterburner skin or version. Microsoft’s Startup Settings route can also differ slightly with Windows version and device configuration.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I restore default GPU settings in MSI Afterburner after a crash?
Open MSI Afterburner, click the circular-arrow Reset control, and apply the change. You can also press Ctrl+D, which MSI says automatically applies defaults while preserving saved profiles.
Why does the overclock return after restarting Windows?
Disable Apply overclocking at system startup. If Afterburner itself launches automatically, also disable Start with Windows. For a returning OC Scanner curve, open OC Scanner and click Revert.
What if Windows crashes before I can open Afterburner?
Use Windows Recovery Environment: Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then choose Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, prevent Afterburner from launching or applying startup settings, restart normally, and reset the GPU.
Does Ctrl+D delete my MSI Afterburner profiles?
No. MSI documents Ctrl+D as applying default settings while leaving saved profiles intact.
Do I need to buy new hardware or factory-reset Windows?
No. The documented fix changes Afterburner settings and, when necessary, uses Windows Safe Mode. A replacement GPU or Windows factory reset is not required for this recovery.
The Bottom Line
Start with MSI Afterburner’s Reset control or Ctrl+D, then disable Apply overclocking at system startup and, if needed, Start with Windows. Use OC Scanner > Revert for a curve that keeps returning. If normal startup is unusable, use Windows Recovery Environment and Safe Mode, stop the automatic startup behavior, and finish the reset in normal Windows.
