How to restore a Pixel feature after an Android update or settings change

Pixel features can disappear because of changed permissions, privacy controls, battery modes, app behavior, model limits, or software faults. Follow this safe sequence to identify the cause and restore the feature without wiping your phone.

If a Pixel feature disappeared after an update or a settings change, do not assume Google removed it. First determine whether it is an Android/Pixel control or a function inside one app, then check the relevant setting, permission, privacy switch, model support, and battery mode. Restart and update before attempting any reset. A factory reset is a last resort because it erases phone data and app data.

Why a Pixel feature can disappear

The same symptom—an option, button, or capability is missing—can have several causes. An Android update may have moved a control, a permission may have been revoked, a privacy switch may be blocking camera or microphone access, an app may have changed its own interface, or the feature may not be available on your particular Pixel model. A temporary software fault is another possibility.

Google’s Pixel guidance repeatedly notes that menu names, steps, and feature availability vary by phone and Android version. Treat the update as a time marker, not proof that it removed the feature. The quickest route is to identify exactly what vanished and whether it is controlled by the operating system or by one app.

1. Define exactly what changed

Name the missing feature

Write down the feature’s exact name and what you expected it to do. “The camera is broken” is less useful than “the camera app no longer shows Night Sight” or “other apps cannot open the camera.” Record whether the control is missing, greyed out, or present but ineffective; those symptoms point to different checks.

Record your Pixel and software details

  • Pixel model, such as the exact generation and variant.
  • Android version, shown in the phone’s About phone information.
  • The date or approximate time the feature last worked.
  • Whether the change followed an Android update, an app update, a settings change, or a period when the phone was unused.
  • Whether the problem affects one app, several apps, or the entire phone.

Keep these details available if you need Pixel support or an app developer. They also prevent a common mistake: following instructions for a different Pixel generation or Android release and concluding that a supported control has been removed.

Classify it as an app or system feature

Open the feature’s usual location. If it exists only inside one app—for example, a tool that appears in that app’s menu—start with that app’s permissions and settings. If it is a phone-wide control, such as a display behavior or a privacy switch, start in Android Settings. A feature that fails in every app is more likely to need system-level troubleshooting; one that fails in only one app usually needs app-specific steps.

2. Restore an app feature by checking permissions and privacy controls

Use the app’s permission page

For a feature that belongs to an installed app, open:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Settings.
  2. Apps.
  3. Select the affected app. If it is not listed immediately, tap See all apps and choose it.
  4. Tap Permissions.

Review the permission that the feature actually needs. A scanning function may require the camera; a voice function may require the microphone; a location-based function may require location access. Set the permission to an option that allows the feature while limiting access when practical. Do not grant unrelated permissions simply because an app requests them.

Review permissions by type

You can also inspect every app that has a particular type of access through Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. Choose a category such as Camera, Microphone, Location, or another listed permission, then check whether the affected app is allowed. This view is useful when you do not know which app changed a permission or when several apps show the same symptom.

Check global privacy switches

Android’s privacy area also includes Privacy Dashboard and device-wide camera and microphone access controls. A global camera or microphone switch can block an app even when the app’s individual permission looks correct. In Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy, inspect the relevant dashboard and access controls, then enable only the resource required by the feature.

If the app’s permission was denied during an update or a settings change, close and reopen the app after correcting it. If the feature remains absent, continue with the app troubleshooting sequence below rather than repeatedly changing unrelated permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check built-in Pixel settings and model support

Search the relevant Settings category

For a built-in phone feature, open Settings and search for its name. Search can be more reliable than scrolling because Android updates sometimes reorganize categories. For display-related controls, start at Settings > Display & touch and inspect the named control or its Advanced options. The exact labels can differ by Pixel model and Android version.

If search finds a setting but the switch is unavailable, read any explanatory text and check related modes. A feature can be present but constrained by another setting, rather than deleted from the phone.

Confirm that your model supports the feature

Google documents some display features by Pixel model. Compare your exact model with the model list in the relevant Pixel help page before treating an absent option as a software fault. A setting that appears in a guide for a newer or different Pixel is not evidence that your phone lost it after updating.

Check battery modes before diagnosing a display problem

Google specifically documents that Battery Saver disables Smooth Display. If Smooth Display stopped working, inspect the phone’s battery mode before changing permissions or resetting the device. Do not generalize this behavior to every Pixel feature: the documented interaction applies to Smooth Display.

4. Restart, then install available updates

Once the relevant setting and permissions look correct, use the least destructive fixes first. Google’s Pixel app guidance starts with restarting and checking for updates, and says: “After each step, restart your phone to see if it fixed the issue.” — Google, Pixel Phone Help, “Fix an installed app that isn’t working on a Pixel phone.”

  1. Restart the Pixel. Use the phone’s normal power menu, allow it to finish booting, and test the feature before changing another setting.
  2. Check for an Android update. Open the system update area in Settings and install an offered update when the phone is charged and connected as recommended by the on-screen instructions.
  3. Update the affected app. Open the app store’s update view and install an available update for that app. If the problem affects several Google apps, check each affected app rather than assuming one update covers all of them.
  4. Restart again and retest. Reproduce the original action—for example, open the same app screen or enable the same display control—so you know whether the change helped.

Restarting after each meaningful step gives you a clean test. If the feature returns temporarily and disappears again, note what action preceded the second failure; that pattern is useful when escalating.

5. Troubleshoot when only one app is affected

Use the app-specific path

If the missing capability is confined to one app, continue with Google’s installed-app troubleshooting rather than performing a phone-wide reset. After confirming permissions and updates, force-stop the app where appropriate, reopen it, and follow the remaining steps offered for that app problem. Restart the phone after each step and test the same feature.

Force-stopping is a targeted way to end a stuck process; it does not restore a permission that is disabled and does not prove that the app itself caused the original change. Use it only for the affected app and expect that unsaved work in that app may be lost.

Decide whether the app or Android is responsible

  • If another app can use the same hardware or permission, the fault is more likely limited to the original app.
  • If every app that needs the same resource fails, inspect the system privacy switch and permission category again.
  • If the app’s own menu changed after its update while the underlying phone capability still works elsewhere, consult that app’s current help information.

Contact the developer when the fault stays isolated

Google directs users to the app developer when an installed app continues to malfunction after the standard troubleshooting steps. Include the app name and version, Pixel model, Android version, the exact feature, when it stopped working, and the steps that reproduce the failure. Do not describe a single-app problem as a Pixel-wide feature removal unless other apps show the same behavior.

Understand the older unused-app permission behavior

Google documents a version-limited behavior in which Play Protect may reset permissions for unused apps on Android 6.0 through Android 10, including apps that have not been used for three months. This is a possible explanation only for phones running those Android versions and for apps that meet that inactivity condition. It should not be presented as the general cause of permission changes on newer Android releases. Recheck the app’s permissions before assuming an update removed its capability.

6. Troubleshoot a phone-wide feature

Repeat the test outside the original app

Use another built-in or trusted app that should expose the same function. For example, if one app cannot access the camera, test whether the standard camera app opens and captures an image. If the function works elsewhere, return to the app-specific path. If it fails everywhere, stay in system settings and Pixel device troubleshooting.

Look for an interaction rather than a missing control

Check battery modes, privacy switches, and the feature’s related Advanced options. A control may be hidden, disabled, or temporarily overridden by another mode. The Smooth Display and Battery Saver relationship is a documented example; other features require their own Pixel-specific instructions, so do not infer an undocumented interaction.

Use Pixel symptom troubleshooting

When restart, updates, permissions, and related settings do not restore a built-in feature, follow Google’s Pixel troubleshooting page for the actual symptom—such as display, camera, connectivity, sound, or sensors. The symptom-specific path matters because the correct checks differ by hardware and function. If those steps fail, use the Pixel support center for escalation and current model-specific guidance.

7. When a factory reset is justified—and how to prepare

A factory reset is an advanced last step, not a routine response to one missing setting or one denied app permission. Google warns that a factory data reset removes all data from the phone and uninstalls apps and their associated data. That includes information that has not been backed up or synchronized.

Verify the backup before erasing anything

  1. Open Settings > Google services > Backup.
  2. Review what the backup screen says is backed up.
  3. Confirm that important photos, contacts, messages, files, authenticator information, and app data are available by the services or methods you use.
  4. Make sure you know the Google Account credentials needed to set the phone up again.

Google says the Backup screen shows what is backed up. Treat that screen as a verification point, not as proof that every app’s private data or every local file will be restored. If the feature is still missing after a reset, the cause may be model availability, an app issue, or a software defect, so a reset cannot guarantee a fix.

Use support before wiping the phone

Contact Pixel support when a built-in feature remains unavailable after the documented troubleshooting path, especially if it fails across apps or appeared immediately after an update. Support can distinguish a model limitation from a software problem and can tell you whether a reset is appropriate for your specific symptom. For a problem isolated to one third-party app, contact that developer instead.

The problem persists across the phone Pixel symptom-specific troubleshooting Follow the relevant Pixel support path, then contact Google Pixel support.
Only an older, unused app lost permissions Android version and inactivity period On Android 6.0–10, check whether the app was unused for three months and restore only needed permissions.

What not to do

  • Do not assume the update removed the feature. Check settings, permissions, privacy controls, and model support first.
  • Do not grant every permission. Allow only the access required by the feature.
  • Do not apply a different Pixel model’s instructions blindly. Google documents model-specific availability and changing menu paths.
  • Do not factory-reset for a single missing toggle. A reset erases phone data and app data and should follow backup verification.
  • Do not treat the Android 6.0–10 unused-app rule as a current universal explanation. Its documented scope is limited to those versions and the stated inactivity condition.

When to stop troubleshooting yourself

Escalate when the feature is a built-in capability, fails in multiple apps, survives a restart and current updates, and is not explained by a privacy or battery setting. Provide Pixel support with the model, Android version, feature name, exact symptom, date of the change, and the steps already completed. If the issue is confined to one app, provide that same information to the app’s developer instead. This evidence lets support investigate the actual failure rather than treating every missing option as an update removal.

The reliable restoration order is therefore: identify the feature, classify it as app or system, check permissions and privacy controls, verify model-specific settings, restart and update, troubleshoot the affected app or device, and only then consider a backed-up factory reset or support escalation.
