How to Restart Restreamer Automatically After a VPS Reboot

Use Docker’s restart policy and confirm the Docker service starts at boot so a Restreamer container can return after a VPS reboot.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Dockerized Restreamer, set a Docker restart policy—usually unless-stopped—and make sure Docker starts when the VPS boots. For an existing container, the policy can usually be changed without recreating it. If you do recreate it, preserve its image, settings, mounts and port mappings, and do not combine --restart with --rm.

1. Check how Restreamer is running

These steps apply when Restreamer runs in a Docker container on your VPS. Restreamer’s Linux installation guide documents this setup for 64-bit Intel/AMD systems and Linux distributions including Ubuntu and Debian.

Find the container name or ID and check whether it is running:

docker ps -a

Before changing anything, note how the container was created. Preserve the image, environment variables, hardware-specific runtime options, bind mounts and port mappings that your installation needs. Restreamer’s guide shows host directories mounted into /core/config and /core/data so configuration and data persist outside the container.

2. Set the restart policy on the existing container

For most existing installations, changing the policy is the least disruptive option. Replace <container> with the name or ID shown by docker ps -a:

docker update --restart unless-stopped <container>

Docker describes restart policies as controlling whether containers start automatically when they exit or when Docker restarts. The Docker run reference documents docker update --restart for changing an existing container’s policy. A container created with --rm cannot be updated this way.

3. Choose between unless-stopped and always

Policy What happens after a manual stop When it fits
unless-stopped If you manually stop the container, it stays stopped when Docker restarts. Choose this when a deliberate stop should remain in effect across a VPS reboot.
always A manually stopped container can start again when Docker or the container is manually restarted. Choose this when Docker should resume the container after a daemon restart even if it had been manually stopped.

Both policies are documented by Docker; the difference is how they treat a manual stop after the Docker daemon restarts. Restreamer’s Linux guide recommends --restart=always for restarting after a crash or device reboot, while Docker’s policy documentation clarifies the manual-stop behavior.

4. If necessary, recreate the container safely

If the current container was created with --rm, or you need to change its run configuration, recreate it with a restart policy and without --rm. Use the same image and preserve the existing deployment’s required options; do not copy a generic command in place of your actual configuration.

Restreamer’s Quick Start example includes both --rm and a restart option. Docker explicitly says that combining --restart and --rm results in an error, so remove --rm when using a restart policy.

Keep the port mappings your installation actually uses. Restreamer’s Linux guide gives common examples: web access on ports 8080 and 8181, RTMP on 1935, RTMPS on 1936, and SRT on UDP 6000. Your host-side ports may differ. The official Restreamer recommendations advise using official Docker images to reduce dependency and operating-system mismatch issues; they do not establish one release tag as best for every VPS.

5. Ensure Docker starts at VPS boot

A container restart policy only helps if Docker itself runs after the host reboots. Docker says its service starts at boot by default on Debian and Ubuntu. For other systemd-based Linux distributions, Docker’s post-installation instructions give these commands:

sudo systemctl enable docker.service
sudo systemctl enable containerd.service

Check your distribution and how Docker was installed before changing service startup. You can inspect Docker’s current service state with:

6. Verify after a reboot

After rebooting the VPS, check whether the container is running:

docker ps

To inspect its restart policy and restart count, substitute the container name or ID:

docker inspect --format '{{.HostConfig.RestartPolicy.Name}} {{.RestartCount}}' <container>

The first value should show the policy you selected. The restart count can help identify repeated restarts; it is not proof that the application or its upstream stream source is ready. If the container is absent from docker ps, check docker ps -a and inspect its logs or Docker events to distinguish a stopped container from one that failed to start.

7. Troubleshoot common failures

  • The container stays stopped after reboot: Check that the intended policy is set with docker inspect, and that Docker is enabled and active at boot. With unless-stopped, a manual stop is expected to persist across a daemon restart.
  • docker update fails: Check whether the container was created with --rm. If so, recreate it without --rm, preserving its existing run configuration and adding a restart policy.
  • The container exits shortly after starting: A restart policy is not a fix for a bad configuration or an application failure. Check container logs and confirm the image, environment, mounts, ports and any hardware-specific options are correct. Docker notes that the policy takes effect only after the container has started successfully and been monitored for at least 10 seconds.
  • Restreamer runs, but the stream does not resume: A Docker restart policy restarts the container; it does not repair unavailable network connectivity, correct application-level readiness problems or make an upstream streaming source available. Check those separately.
  • The container starts but the web interface or stream endpoint is unreachable: Compare the actual port mappings with the ones your deployment requires, and check the VPS firewall and network configuration. Do not replace custom host-side mappings with example ports without verifying the setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, rather than run Restreamer on your VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
