Restart or factory reset: which should you choose?
| Action | Use it for | Effect | How to do it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart (reboot) | A temporary issue or first troubleshooting step | Reboots the device; it is not a factory reset. | Unplug for one minute and reconnect, or use the Google Home app. |
| Factory reset | When troubleshooting, including a restart, has not resolved the problem | Restores factory settings, clears device data, cannot be undone, and disconnects the device from home members. Some basic device data may remain associated with the home. | Use the physical controls for the exact model. The Google Home app and voice commands cannot perform this reset. |
Google’s instructions distinguish a reboot from a factory reset in Reboot Google smart speaker or display and Factory reset your Google smart speaker or display.

How to restart a Google Nest speaker or display
Power-cycle the device
- Unplug the device’s power cord.
- Leave it unplugged for one minute.
- Reconnect the power cord and let the device start up.
Restart it in the Google Home app
- Make sure your phone or tablet and the speaker or display are linked to the same Google account.
- Open Google Home and go to Home and then All devices.
- Touch and hold the device tile, then select Settings, More, and Reboot.
Google Home app labels can change. If you cannot find the reboot control, use the power-cycle steps instead.
Before you factory reset
- Confirm the model name so you use the correct button sequence.
- Understand that the reset clears device data and cannot be undone. The device is disconnected from home members; some basic device data may remain associated with the home.
- If you have a Nest Hub Max, save any important video-history footage and remove the device from the Google Home app before resetting it.
- If you have a Nest Hub (2nd gen), review your Sleep Sensing data first.
Factory reset controls and timings are model-specific. Google’s official factory-reset instructions are the reference if your model is not listed below or the controls differ.

If you are resetting because Wi-Fi changed
Google Nest and Home speakers and displays remember one Wi-Fi network at a time. If your network credentials changed, first forget the old network and set up the device on the new one in Google Home, following Google’s Wi-Fi setup instructions. A factory reset may be needed if the app cannot communicate with the device or the network-change steps fail; after resetting, set up the device again.
