First identify what “ends” means. If a prerecorded ambience file reaches its end, loop that input with FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1. If a network input disconnects, use reconnect options supported by that input protocol. If publishing fails, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can retry certain output errors. If the FFmpeg process exits, use a process supervisor such as systemd to launch it again. These fixes act at different layers, and none by itself confirms that YouTube has restored the broadcast.
Identify what stopped
Check the FFmpeg log and determine which event occurred before changing the command or service. A file reaching its end normally is not the same as a network disconnection, an output error, or an exited process.

| What happened | Where recovery belongs | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| The prerecorded file reached EOF | Loop the input with -stream_loop -1. [FFmpeg documentation] |
It does not relaunch a crashed FFmpeg process. |
| A supported network input disconnected | Use the protocol’s reconnect options. [FFmpeg protocol documentation] | It does not supervise FFmpeg after the process exits. |
| The output connection failed temporarily while FFmpeg kept running | Consider FIFO muxer output recovery. [FFmpeg format documentation] | It cannot repair a persistently invalid key, command, input, or network path. |
| FFmpeg exited | Run it under a process supervisor such as systemd. [systemd service documentation] | A local process restart does not establish that YouTube resumed the broadcast. |
Loop a prerecorded ambience file
If the intended behavior is to replay a finite local recording, set -stream_loop -1 as an input option immediately before that file’s -i. FFmpeg documents this option as the number of times to loop an input; -1 means loop indefinitely. [FFmpeg documentation]
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i ambience.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative command, not a universal YouTube preset: it assumes the file’s codecs and stream characteristics are suitable for the output, and the RTMP endpoint and key must match your YouTube setup. Replace ambience.mp4 and YOUR_STREAM_KEY with your own values. If stream copy is not compatible with the source or required output, use appropriate encoding options for that source. Confirm behavior with your installed FFmpeg build.

Input-option placement matters: put -stream_loop -1 before the -i belonging to the file you want to repeat. It prevents normal EOF for that input; it does not restart FFmpeg after a crash or fix a failed publishing connection.
Reconnect a network input
For a network source that disconnects before EOF, FFmpeg documents protocol-specific options including reconnect. reconnect_at_eof is a distinct option: the protocol documentation says that treating EOF as an error and reconnecting can be useful for live or endless streams. The same documentation describes controls for network errors, HTTP errors, retry counts, and retry delays. [FFmpeg protocol documentation]

- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5

These are not universal switches for every input. Consult the documentation for the protocol in use and check the options available in your installed FFmpeg version; the online documentation may describe a newer revision. Do not use input reconnect behavior as a substitute for process supervision if FFmpeg exits.
Recover from a temporary output failure
If FFmpeg remains alive but its publishing output experiences a temporary failure, the FFmpeg FIFO pseudo-muxer offers output recovery options, including attempt_recovery and a recovery wait. Its documentation shows retrying a network output while real-time processing continues. [FFmpeg format documentation]

Recovery may drop or delay packets depending on configuration. Check the FIFO options supported by your installed version and test them with your actual output. Retrying cannot resolve a persistently wrong stream key, invalid command, unavailable input, or broken network path.
Restart an exited FFmpeg process with systemd
On Linux, make FFmpeg the service’s main process so systemd can observe its exit and apply a restart policy. For an ambience file, the service command should include the input loop if replaying the file is intended; systemd relaunching the process and FFmpeg looping the file solve separate problems.

- Efficient Active Cooler: Effectively lowers operating temperature and prevents performance throttling. Runs quietly even under long-time heavy load, ensures stable operation all day long. SANOOV RPi 5 4GB kit offer an active cooler, which combines an aluminium heatsink with a high-performance PWM fan. Active cooler is fully compatible with the Pi OS, which can effectively reduce the temperature of RPi5 and ensure its good performance during long-term high load operation
- Sturdy ABS Protective Case: Well-fitted for Raspberry Pi 5 board, can be secured with 4 screws to effectively protect the Pi 5 motherboard from damage, reserves full access to all ports and buttons. SANOOV uses ABS material to produce the case, which has a softer texture and feel. Meanwhile, SANOOV case adopts a layered design for easy disassembly and installation. (Tip: The Case cannot install M.2 HAT Add on Board and Solid State Drive!)
- Wide Application & Full Compatibility: Seamlessly compatible with official OS and mainstream peripheral accessories for Raspberry Pi 5. Whether you are a beginner, student, electronics hobbyist or professional developer, this all-in-one kit meets your diverse needs. It excels in IoT projects, robotics design, retro gaming devices, home media servers and other DIY creations. Backed by a large global community, you can easily find guides, technical support and shared projects online
- Create a unit: add a service file such as
/etc/systemd/system/ambience-stream.service. Use an absolute path to FFmpeg and your media file. Keep the stream key private; restrict access to the unit file and avoid publishing logs that expose credentials. - Set the execution and restart policy: in
[Service], useExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/ambience.mp4 [your output options and destination], then setRestart=on-failureto restart qualifying failures, orRestart=alwaysif a clean exit should also trigger a restart. Add a deliberate delay such asRestartSec=5. The bracketed text is explanatory: replace it with valid FFmpeg output options and your destination; it is not literal command syntax. - Load and start the service: run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload, thensudo systemctl enable --now ambience-stream.service. - Inspect its state and logs: use
systemctl status ambience-stream.serviceandjournalctl -u ambience-stream.service -f. Check the logs for the actual FFmpeg error rather than treating each relaunch as proof of recovery.
Restart=on-failure does not restart a clean exit; Restart=always also covers one. A restart loop can repeatedly relaunch a persistently broken command or authentication setup, so correct the logged cause instead of relying on retries. For current unit behavior and restart settings, consult the systemd service documentation. [systemd service documentation]

Verify the broadcast after recovery
A systemd status showing that FFmpeg started proves only that the local process launched. It does not prove YouTube resumed the same broadcast, preserved continuity, or made the stream publicly live. Open YouTube Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health, and confirm the audience-facing stream is live. This is an operational check, not a guarantee that a process restart restores a particular broadcast. [YouTube Live Control Room]
Troubleshoot common recovery failures
- The video plays once and stops: confirm
-stream_loop -1appears before the correct file’s-i. It applies to an input, not globally to every input. - Reconnect options are rejected or ignored: verify that the input protocol supports the option and that the installed FFmpeg build provides it. Protocol reconnect options are not interchangeable with process restarts. [FFmpeg protocol documentation]
- FFmpeg stays running but the output is still down: inspect the error and destination. FIFO recovery addresses certain temporary output failures, not invalid credentials or a persistent network/configuration fault. [FFmpeg format documentation]
- systemd repeatedly restarts the service: inspect
journalctl -u ambience-stream.servicefor command, file-access, or publishing errors. Fix the underlying cause; repeated launches do not make a persistent fault transient. - FFmpeg is active but YouTube is not live: inspect Live Control Room preview and stream health. Local process state is not proof of platform recovery.
