Use an external process supervisor to relaunch FFmpeg after it exits. If FFmpeg stays running but its YouTube output fails, process supervision alone will not help: FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer can attempt recovery from some output errors. These are separate failure layers, and neither can fix every cause or guarantee that a YouTube event resumes unattended.
Identify which part of the stream failed
A 24/7 stream has at least two relevant failure layers: the FFmpeg process on your host and the feed that YouTube receives. A restart policy handles the first only when FFmpeg exits. If FFmpeg remains alive while output is stalled or rejected, restarting the process may not be the right fix.

Check both FFmpeg’s logs and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and timestamped errors. A running FFmpeg process is not proof that the public event is receiving a healthy feed.

Set up process supervision
Run FFmpeg as a managed service
On Linux, use a service manager such as systemd or a supervising wrapper to launch the actual FFmpeg command and retry it after an exit. Configure a sensible restart delay, plus a start-rate limit or alert. Otherwise, a permanent error such as a bad key or invalid input can produce a rapid, unobserved restart loop.

Service-manager syntax and behavior depend on your distribution and version. Consult the documentation for the system you run rather than copying a supposedly universal unit file. Preserve your real input, codecs, stream mapping, and YouTube destination in the service configuration, and ensure the service account can read the media and logs.
Make a background invocation non-interactive
FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends -nostdin or redirecting standard input when running in the background, so console input checks do not suspend the job. The FAQ’s example is ffmpeg -nostdin -i INPUT OUTPUT; it is illustrative, not a complete YouTube publishing command. Add the option to your own command without replacing its actual source, mappings, codecs, or destination.

Keep useful logs and check restart behavior
- Capture FFmpeg’s error output somewhere you can inspect after a restart; do not discard the log that explains why the process exited.
- After a test failure, verify that the supervisor starts a new process and that it uses the intended command, media, and stream key.
- Check whether YouTube receives the restarted feed and whether the event becomes live. The public gap depends on detection, restart delay, connection recovery, and event configuration; there is no universal recovery time.
Use FIFO recovery only for the output-failure case
FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer separates encoding and muxing with a queue and can attempt recovery after certain output failures. The official documentation includes this RTMP illustration:

Do not paste it unchanged: confirm that FIFO and the chosen options fit your output and installed build, then test the exact command with your source and event.

-attempt_recoveryis false by default in the current FFmpeg documentation.-recovery_wait_timedefaults to five seconds; the example overrides it to one second.max_recovery_attemptsdefaults to zero, meaning unlimited attempts in the documented behavior.- The FIFO queue default is 60 packets in the current documentation.
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1can let processing continue without waiting for the queue, but packets may be omitted. That avoids blocking at the cost of gaps.
These details are version-sensitive. Check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg build and validate its accepted options. FIFO recovery can complement a supervisor, but it does not replace one.
Do not treat HTTP reconnect flags as a YouTube output restart
FFmpeg’s -reconnect options concern specified HTTP protocol situations, including some input reconnection cases. They are not a generic restart switch and should not be copied as a fix for an RTMP or RTMPS publishing output. Which options apply depends on the protocol and whether it is used on the input or output side; consult the FFmpeg protocol reference for the exact command.

Verify the YouTube event after recovery
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the intended event is selected and receiving the encoder feed.
- Inspect the preview, stream health, and timestamped error messages alongside FFmpeg’s logs. Resolve any key, input, format, account, or platform issue those messages identify.
- YouTube’s encoder workflow calls for entering the server URL and stream key in the encoder, waiting for the preview, and clicking Go live. After an automatic restart, confirm that the event is actually live; some event configurations may require human intervention.
- Test the full recovery path using the channel, command, and event configuration you intend to run. Do not infer unattended recovery from a process restart alone.
Treat the stream key as a credential: keep it out of public logs, screenshots, and shared command examples, and rotate it if exposed.

Use settings that match your encoder and source
YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance lists recommended bitrate ranges by ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate. Choose values for your actual combination rather than applying one bitrate to every stream, and test while monitoring YouTube’s stream health. Make sure the music can be streamed
Restarting FFmpeg does not resolve copyright or reused-content issues. Use music and other material you are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s current policies and any notices in Studio before relying on a continuous music broadcast.
Do not assume a long stream will archive as expected
YouTube’s encoder help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that is not a guarantee about the archive outcome of a particular continuous stream. YouTube also says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Check the current event guidance if archiving or DVR matters to your channel.
Troubleshoot common restart failures
