To reopen your tabs after a full browser restart, enable the option to restore your previous session before quitting. In Chrome, go to Settings → On startup → Continue where you left off. Edge also supports reopening the previous session; its exact menu wording can vary by version. Opera users can look in startup settings for an option to retain tabs from the previous session, but the label should be checked in the installed version.
What “restart without losing tabs” means
A restart means quitting the browser completely and launching it again. The startup setting tells the browser what to open on its next launch; it does not guarantee that every page’s unsaved form entries, private session, or sign-in state will survive. In Chrome, restoring pages is connected to saved cookies and site data, so clearing site data when windows close can affect whether sites reopen signed in.

Restart Google Chrome and reopen your tabs
- Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu, then Settings.
- Select On startup in the left navigation.
- Choose Continue where you left off.
- Quit Chrome completely and launch it again. The setting is intended to reopen the pages that were open when you quit.
Google documents that Chrome can “re-open the same pages you were looking at when you quit.” Its help page also says Chrome saves cookies and site data for this behavior, and documents an option to delete saved site data when all windows close. Restart Microsoft Edge and restore the previous session
Edge supports a startup behavior that reopens URLs from the previous session. Microsoft’s managed-browser policy documentation calls this behavior RestoreOnStartupIsLastSession and describes the session as being restored as it was. The policy is supported on Windows and macOS starting with Edge version 77; Android and iOS are not supported for this policy. This is policy documentation, not the usual consumer settings route. For the consumer Edge interface, look in Settings → Start, home, and new tab page for an option such as Open tabs from the previous session. The precise wording may differ in your installed version, so search Settings for “previous session” or “startup” if you do not see that label.
Microsoft’s policy page also documents a managed-browser option, available from Edge version 125, that can restore the prior session and open a specified set of URLs. That is an administrator policy, not a requirement for ordinary tab restoration.

Restart Opera and retain previous-session tabs
An Opera community-forum discussion gives this route: open opera:settings/onStartup and select Retain tabs from previous session. Because this guidance is community-sourced and may not match current releases, check Opera Settings for “startup” and confirm the label in your version before quitting. The discussion also points to History as a place to reopen closed tabs, but it does not establish that the same behavior or setting is available in every current Opera version or platform. If your tabs do not come back
- Check that you launched the same browser profile and that its previous-session startup option remains enabled.
- If the browser has already opened a new session, check History or recently closed tabs if available. Restoration is not guaranteed for every crash, profile, or cleared session.
- For Edge crashes or failures to open, Microsoft suggests updating Edge, closing other tabs and apps, restarting the computer, or repairing Edge through Windows installed-app settings. Microsoft says repair should not affect browser data and settings; repair is troubleshooting, not a method for recovering a lost session. - Do not reset Chrome settings as a tab-recovery step. Google says a reset changes settings including homepage and startup settings and pinned tabs; it is different from enabling session restoration. Google Chrome Help: Reset Chrome settings to default.
