If every browser except Microsoft Edge closes as soon as it opens, first check whether Microsoft Family Safety is blocking unsupported browsers. If that does not fit, capture the Windows and crash details, test for a background-software conflict with a clean boot, then use the affected browser’s own repair guidance. The symptom alone does not identify one cause.
1. Check Microsoft Family Safety and account restrictions
This is the first check if the PC uses a child or otherwise managed account, or if web filtering is enabled. Microsoft says that when the “Only use allowed websites” setting is on, unsupported browsers are blocked so filtering cannot be bypassed. Microsoft currently supports its web filters in Edge. See Microsoft’s Family Safety website and search filtering instructions.

- Ask the family organizer or device administrator whether Microsoft Family Safety web filtering is enabled for your account.
- Check whether “Only use allowed websites” is turned on, and review the Family Safety app and game filters for the affected browser.
- If an organizer or administrator manages the device, ask them to review the settings rather than changing restrictions yourself.
This policy can explain why Edge works while other browsers are blocked, but it does not account for every report of browsers crashing at launch.

2. Record what is happening before changing settings
Write down the details that can distinguish a launch failure from a broader Windows problem. Microsoft community troubleshooting discussions ask about the Windows version, recent updates, the timing of the crash, and whether other applications are affected. You can find the Windows version and build by running winver.

- Windows edition, version, and build number
- Recent Windows update history and when the problem began
- Which browsers fail and whether each closes immediately or only after some use
- Any error message, and whether unrelated applications also crash
These details will make a later support request more useful. A user report from 2022 describes the same instant-crash symptom, but does not establish a universal cause: the Microsoft Q&A report.
3. Test for a startup-program or service conflict
A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It is a diagnostic test: if browsers launch in a clean boot, a third-party service or startup program may be involved. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions carefully, especially the step to hide Microsoft services before disabling third-party services.

- Use the Microsoft procedure to set up a clean boot, hiding Microsoft services before changing the remaining service settings.
- Restart Windows and try launching the browsers that normally fail.
- If they work, re-enable the disabled services and startup items systematically, testing between changes, to narrow down the conflict.
- Restore normal startup settings when the test is complete, following Microsoft’s instructions.
If the browsers still fail in a clean boot, that result does not prove a Windows or hardware fault; it simply makes a third-party startup conflict less likely.

If the problem appears limited to one browser, or you have ruled out a shared policy or startup conflict, try the relevant vendor’s documented troubleshooting steps. Resetting one browser may test for a profile or configuration problem, but it is unlikely by itself to explain why several different browsers fail at once.

- Google Chrome: Reset Chrome settings to default.
- Mozilla Firefox: Troubleshoot Firefox crashes.
5. Decide when to escalate
Contact Microsoft support or your device manufacturer if the browsers continue to crash after these checks. Escalate sooner if unrelated applications are failing too, since that points beyond a single browser’s settings. Share the Windows build, update timing, crash timing, affected applications, and clean-boot result so support can work from specific observations.
Do not treat rolling back a Windows update, running disk repair, or reinstalling Windows as a confirmed fix based on a similar report. In an August 2026 Microsoft Q&A exchange, a user said rolling back appeared to stop the crashes temporarily, but later reported another crash: the report and troubleshooting exchange. If reasonable software checks do not resolve the issue, a locally chosen PC diagnostics service is a last-resort option, not a guaranteed repair.
