To force restart an unresponsive Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, press and hold the Side key and Volume down key together for more than 7 seconds. Let go when the phone restarts or the Samsung logo appears. This restarts the phone; it is not a factory reset and does not erase your data.
Force restart your Galaxy Z Flip
- Find the physical Side key and Volume down key. You do not need a working touchscreen.
- Press and hold both keys at the same time for more than 7 seconds.
- Release the keys when the phone restarts or the Samsung logo appears, then let it finish booting.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip6 user guide specifies holding the Side button and Volume Down button simultaneously for more than 7 seconds to restart a frozen, unresponsive device: Samsung’s UK frozen-phone guidance also describes the button-based restart. Button names, placement, and behavior can vary by model, region, and software version, so consult the manual for your exact Z Flip generation if the layout differs.

Force restart, normal restart, and factory reset are different
- Force restart: Use the physical-button procedure when the phone is frozen or will not respond. It restarts the device; it is not a data-erasing reset.
- Normal restart: If the screen works, use the on-screen power controls to restart the phone instead.
- Factory data reset: This is a separate, later troubleshooting option that restores original settings and completely erases data. Back up important files before considering it. Samsung explains this distinction in its force-reboot and troubleshooting guidance.
If your Z Flip still appears dead
A fully depleted battery may not show a charging indicator right away. Connect a Samsung-certified charger and cable and give the phone time to charge. If charging does not seem to work, try a known-good charger and cable. Charging is for a phone that may have run out of power; it is not required for every force restart. If the phone keeps freezing
Once the phone is responsive, check for available software updates and review storage and memory. If the freezes began after installing an app, start the phone in Safe mode to help assess whether a third-party app is involved. If the phone remains unresponsive after these steps, or you suspect physical damage, contact Samsung support or an authorized service center. Do not factory-reset the phone as an immediate substitute for the force restart; that separate step erases data.
