How to Restart an OBS YouTube Stream After a Computer Reboot

Use OBS’s --startstreaming launch parameter and a Windows Startup shortcut, then test separately that the correct YouTube broadcast goes live.

On Windows, OBS can launch and begin streaming automatically after you sign in: add OBS’s documented --startstreaming launch parameter to a shortcut, then put that shortcut in the Windows Startup folder. This does not by itself ensure YouTube has the correct broadcast selected or that the broadcast is live for viewers. Test the full sequence under adult supervision before relying on it, especially if a child appears on camera.

What automatic restart does—and does not—mean

There are three separate events: Windows starts OBS, OBS sends stream data, and YouTube makes a broadcast live for viewers. OBS’s --startstreaming parameter addresses the second event by telling OBS to start streaming when it launches; it does not create or select a YouTube broadcast. Confirm your stream destination and broadcast workflow separately in OBS and YouTube Studio. OBS documents the launch parameter; an OBS community guide describes linking a selected broadcast to OBS.

Automatic launch is not a guarantee of recovery. If the network or YouTube is unavailable when OBS starts, or the selected broadcast has ended or is not the intended one, manual recovery may still be necessary. That follows from the separation between OBS sending data and YouTube’s broadcast state; the launch parameter does not promise otherwise.

Prepare and test the stream before automating it

  1. Set up the OBS scene and audio. Confirm the intended video or sources, audio levels, and stream destination. Start the stream manually first and check both the incoming stream and the viewer-facing broadcast. OBS recommends testing settings and the stream before relying on them. See the OBS Quick Start Guide and OBS Studio Overview Guide.
  2. Confirm the YouTube broadcast workflow. Verify that the right account and destination are selected and that the intended broadcast is available. A scheduled broadcast may have controls that determine whether YouTube goes live automatically when OBS starts sending data or waits for a separate Go Live action. The detailed instructions available for those controls come from an OBS community guide last updated October 8, 2021, so check the current YouTube Studio and OBS interfaces rather than assuming the labels or behavior have not changed.
  3. Decide whether automatic go-live is appropriate. Automatic go-live suits an unattended restart, but offers less opportunity to preview the incoming stream before viewers see it. Requiring a separate Go Live action gives someone a chance to check first, but means a person may need to intervene after reboot. The same older community guide says Auto-stop ends a broadcast when streaming stops and can prevent reconnecting to that broadcast later. Verify current settings before using a scheduled event for automatic recovery.

Make OBS start streaming when Windows starts

OBS’s documented Windows launch parameter is --startstreaming. Add it to a shortcut’s Target field, then place the shortcut in the Startup folder for the Windows user who will run OBS. OBS’s launch-parameter documentation covers the argument.

  1. Create or copy an OBS shortcut. Locate the OBS shortcut you use, or create one pointing to obs64.exe. The executable is commonly installed under C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bit, but use the actual path on your computer.
  2. Edit the Target field. In the shortcut’s Properties, find Target. After the closing quotation mark around the executable path, add a space and --startstreaming. For example: "C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Keep the path in quotes if it contains spaces; the argument belongs outside those quotes.
  3. Add the shortcut to Startup. Press Win+R, enter shell:startup, and press Enter. Copy the edited shortcut into the folder that opens. This runs it when that Windows user starts a session; it does not start OBS before Windows has reached that user’s session.
  4. If using a scheduled or automated launch, set its working directory. Set “Start in” to the folder containing obs64.exe. OBS specifically notes this working-directory requirement for automated launches.
  5. Reboot and supervise a test. Sign in to the intended Windows account. Check that OBS opens with the correct scene and begins sending data to the intended destination, then separately verify that the YouTube broadcast actually goes live. OBS’s recommendation to test before relying on a stream is especially important here.

Windows Startup folder or scheduled task?

Approach What it does When it may fit Important limitation
Startup-folder shortcut Launches the shortcut when that Windows user starts a session. A straightforward setup when starting OBS after sign-in is enough. It does not itself ensure network readiness, the correct YouTube broadcast, or viewer-facing go-live.
Scheduled or automated launch Uses a Windows automation mechanism to launch OBS according to its configured conditions. When you need launch conditions beyond a basic sign-in startup. Set “Start in” to the folder containing obs64.exe; the launch argument still does not select a broadcast or guarantee YouTube goes live.

Neither approach is universally more reliable. Choose based on when OBS should launch and configure the YouTube broadcast behavior separately.

Account and child-safety rules to check

YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to live stream. It also says a person must be at least 16 years old to live stream. If a 13–15-year-old appears in a stream without a visibly accompanying adult, YouTube says live chat may be disabled and the account may temporarily lose access to chat or other features. These are YouTube’s current rules as described on its Get started with live streaming page, accessed October 3, 2026.

An audience of children does not necessarily mean a child appears on camera; treat those as different situations. If a child is on camera, have an adult oversee the stream and check YouTube’s current age-related guidance. Do not assume an automated reboot setup meets any supervision expectation.

Troubleshoot a failed restart

  • OBS opens but does not start streaming: Check that --startstreaming is outside the closing quote in Target, that the edited shortcut is the one in shell:startup, and that the intended Windows account signed in.
  • OBS starts, but YouTube is not live: Confirm the correct destination and broadcast in OBS and YouTube Studio. Determine whether the workflow requires a separate Go Live action or whether its automatic-start behavior is enabled. Check current controls, since the detailed community guidance on this is dated.
  • OBS cannot reconnect to the scheduled broadcast: Check whether the broadcast ended or whether Auto-stop was enabled. The older OBS community guide warns that Auto-stop can prevent reconnecting to that broadcast; confirm the current behavior in YouTube Studio.
  • The stream fails after a reboot or starts unreliably: Check that Windows has signed in, the network is available, and the selected broadcast is still usable. The startup argument cannot ensure that external services or the connection are ready when OBS launches.
  • A scheduled launch behaves differently from a manual shortcut: Set the task’s “Start in” directory to the folder containing obs64.exe, as OBS specifies for automated launches.
